It is great that you talk about subjects like this. This is a pretty damn important topic if people are actually interesting in working in music and it is fairly uncommon for music education channels to talk about it
Indeed! It's so important to understand the deals we make and even a lot of professional composers are very unaware of what's inside their paperwork.
I’m all the way in South Africa and I’ve never been to Any seminar that addresses or dissects this. This was very informative 🔥 Thank you
Thank you for watching! Glad it was helpful!
How enormously helpful this is!
Glad to hear that!
This was extremely helpful. Thank you
Super Video. Sehr informativ. Gerne mehr in dieser Richtung!
Danke! Freut mich, dass es hilfreich war! :-)
I like your opening page, nice nature, your nice touch etc.
Wonderful information! Thank you very much for creating this video. It truly is helpful.
Thank you for watching! So glad you found it helpful. That means “Mission Accomplished” for me :-)
Your channel is fantastic, so much valuable information crammed in these videos! And I love that your drink coaster is a floppy disk haha
Thank you so much! Really happy this is helpful! And yes, floppy disk coasters for the win! :-)
Hard to swallow, but certainly very interesting, and absolutely important
Definitely the least fun video to make and watch so far but indeed important. :-)
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer not sure when I will have to deal with a contract of that sort, but I will definitely go back to this video for reference, as well as checking out templates online. Until now, I have only made deal memos for my clients, and that is ok 🙂
wow thank you Anne-Kathrin! this is extremely helpful. I'm definitely buying the contract document template.
Very helpfull and lots of detailed information! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
Excellent information...thanks!
Love your videos! So helpful. Would love to see a video on mixing and mastering process. Do you polish the tracks yourself or does someone else normally do that?
Very informative! Thanks so much for doing this
Thanks for watching! Loved your video on Dorico by the way!
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Thanks for watching too!
Thank you, Anne.
Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Really Informative !!! 🤓🤓🤓
I'm glad this is helpful - even though this may be the most boring of my videos. :-)
Hi Anne! Do you know where we can find a mockup of this type of contract?
Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Adonis, great to see you here :D
Thank you. Felt like I just had lunch with a kind lawyer :)
Haha, wonderful! If the composing thing doesn’t work out, maybe that’s a brand I could go for. :-P Really glad you enjoyed this!
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer The composing thing is absolutely gonna work out for you! You’re well on your way. Thanks again for all your insights and sharing.
Very interesting. In Australia the unions have a stronger position than in the US.
Thank you, Anne! Could you recommend a lawyer for contracts?
Really interesting! Can you give a really rough example of a potential timeframe for delivery on a feature film, from contract signing, to 25 %, to 100%, to scoring sessions?
Not really since it depends on the score itself and if the movie already has a release date. It can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months or even a whole year.
Thanks for the info! Is it possible/reasonable to add in the contract the rights to publish and/or monetise full scores of our music? Not the exact scores used for the sessions (perhaps considered confidential) but maybe suites or even a concert version of the full soundtrack. I don't get why things are so strict about sheet music and how this can impact the intellectual properties of studios.
That should be in there by default. But since the production owns part of the rights, any publishing would have to be green lit by them or even done through them. Unless otherwise specified of course. But they always have to get a piece of the pie no matter what material is published anyway if they hold an ownership share.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Thanks! This makes sense but doesn't explain the lack of sheet music releases from composers. Maybe any potential profits are too low to justify more work from either parties. I guess I'll find out someday in the future if I'm lucky enough to be in the position to negotiate something like this for my projects. Assuming someone will care enough to actually check full scores of my music of course.. ( 😢)
@@dimitrismarinakis9995 Oh yes, it's definitely a lack of potential profits. It's plenty of extra work and extra cost to get this done, to get a publisher interested, get all parties to sign off on it etc. for it to be worth anyone's time and $$$. That's also why often soundtracks are not released. Film music remains a niche after all - the market for it seems big but its audience is actually rather small in the grand scheme of things save for a few hit soundtracks.
Stephan
I would like to buy your cue sheet template.. please.....its very useful than mine. Thanks...
Hey Anne have you already done a video about how much money to ask based on the film budget? How to deal with money when they call you for a work... I can't find in your channel. A video like that would be interesting
I can definitely make a video about that. It’s a pretty involved topic but it’s never truly based on the film budget.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer yeah interesting point of view I didn't think about.
How do you protect yourself against unintended copyright infringement, i.e. you compose something already there, but you are not aware of that?
so is the composer wrong for letting a client pay for tax? if he isnt doing it professionaly? just wondering
I'm not sure I understand the question. You can't "let" a client pay for your personal income taxes unless you're a full-time employee with a monthly salary. Then the taxes will be automatically taken out of your paycheck. But if you're a freelancer, the moment you get paid for any type of job, you are considered to be doing this professionally and therefore are responsible for paying tax on the money that was paid to you. It doesn't matter if it's only one time, taxes are owed no matter what. Of course depending on your country / region, local tax laws may apply that might slightly differ (e.g. most countries have an annual threshold up to which you don't pay taxes on money earned, especially for students).
Ain´t musicians in London union affiliated?
Yes, they are indeed.
10:45 awwww ;(
Yeah, the credit struggle is real in Hollywood...
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer I really felt it when you said "I've been there". After all this hard work, your name is not even mentioned. But at least now you are trying to expose your team which is really kind of you. You will earn both their love and respect :)
