Castlevania's foray onto the Genesis sees two protagonists duke it out with Dracula and his minions: John Morris and Eric Lecarde (tasvideos.org/1221M). John Morris carries the famed whip, and Eric Lecarde wields a spear.
This run sees John Morris take on the hordes of minions. While Morris is essentially slower in movement, he is still the faster of the two due to his ability to destroy the bosses quicker than Lecarde. For more precise details, see the authors' detailed submission text. - Hry

One of my favorite Castlevanias, I love the soundtrack, and this is definitely one of the hardest, especially the last gauntlet fights. Never watched TAS or Speedrun of this game, loved it.
Hands down, the best soundtrack of the 16 bit Vanias.

Rondo/X68000 better imo. Compositions are good but I feel the genesis sound chip holds this one back.
I've never played this but the fittingly epic lagginess in the final phase Dracula must have raised hairs back in the day.
This is one of my favorite Castlevanias!
I didn't even know he's invincible while doing the whip swing.
Indestructible projectiles like bombs and lasers still hurt him while he swings, found that out the hard way trying to cheese the barrel room in stage 5.
I've used John Morris once for the Castlevania Bloodlines game, man did I have a hell of a time using him and beating that game

That was awesome. He uses the whip better than any Belmont.
I'm absolute SNES over Mega Drive. Games overall, and most of all sound.
However, between this and Super Castlevania IV I say this is several levels better. The instruments and SFXes take away from it, yet the soundtrack here is amazing, while SCIV settled for atmosphere. Even visually I like the colours here. SCIV gave us Simon's theme, possibly even the best version of it, and that's it. Bloodlines gave us a proper 16 bit Castlevania experience that isn't Dracula X, along with an additional playable character.

Those weren't that great, listenable, but not amazing.
I had the Genesis w/Sonic, and then got a SNES; and I switched back and forth between games that I got for them. As a person who who owned both consoles of that time period, SNES had the better sound card(s).
This game used to piss me off so bad when i was a kid 😂
I LOVE seeing Castlevania runs. The series as a whole commands a deep respect from me. There are only 4 games in the entire franchise that I actively dislike. The two on N64, Haunted Castle, and Adventure 1.
You should try Haunted Castle on Version E. It's actually quite fun

Why does John use jumping as his normal movement tech but Eric simply walks?
John saves 4 frames for every jump
So John DOES move faster jumping by game design. Interesting.
Due to their movement speeds and jumping physics, John saves a couple of frames each jump, but Eric loses a couple each jump.
John and Eric move at the same speed in mid-air
While, relative to the air speed, Johns' strut is slower while Eric's is faster
What the hell? The rotating blades at 13:40 does not cause damage? All those years, I avoided getting hit by inching forward through the grooved cuts for nothing? Hahahahaha!!!! Holy S.
The hit boxes don't match up perfectly, so you can literally jitter, and jump through them at specific points
This is a TAS, if you aren’t 100% familiar with the hitboxes it will take 40% of your health
