this is real life welding for those not in the welding business
this is real life welding. all the other videos they weld heavy plate but you showed what we have to contend with. over the top is tough
When I was young I took two years of welding at the Washington Holmes Technical Center School in Chipley Florida I know I can do that what to do is by tacking it let it cool tack it little cool just like you show them the video and I appreciate showing your video sir my name is Riki Gilley whenever a friend gets here for me to weld his muffler on I will do like you I saw you do in the video and I will keep that in mind thank you and have a wonderful day and a wonderful morning
@rikigilley1301
OMG me to.. was Eddy Beckworth still the instructor ?
Wow. I attempted something similar today and just made the hole bigger 😣 great work.
You’re either holding too long or running too high
You should always practice on something else before attempting it on that actual part you're trying to fix.
Nice work with this repair, well explained on the whole process, cheers 👍
Really an excellent technique for this pipe!! Thank you for posting!!
My pleasure Thomas! I did the same weld on exhaust pipe on Ford f350 seven years ago - still no any issues, no leaks. Just like to save parts and money!
@@PistonShack This was by far the best video I have seen on using a stick welder to repair thin exhaust pipe. I fix my off-road 1990 f250 snow plow truck on occasion and especially my 1997 GMC K1500 Suburban work horse, The catalytic converter pipes go thru hell up here in Northern Vermont and require TLC ...Thanks again for posting!! Great video!!
Thank you for your kind feedback and sharing your experience. My goal was after watching few videos to make the video informative, easy to follow and short as possible.
In Northern Vermont you have tons of salt on a road, rust belt mechanics nightmare, everything rusts pretty fast.
Greetings from Western Canada, British Columbia!
Thanks so much, I've been getting pulled over all week about my exhaust and I can't afford to pay a shop $1000
Glad to help Daniel! How is your welding repair?
@@PistonShack it kept braking at first before I watched this video, I was running it at 45, and trying to do longer stretches. After watching this video I started messing with the voltage to avoid getting to hot, and did exactly what you were doing. I can happily say that I have a car that meets local noise ordinance
Needless to say, good 👍 job
Thanks for your feedback Ed. How is your repair?
@@PistonShack in a state of perpetual disrepair
Smart weld!
Great fix 👍🇬🇧Thats exactly how is do it .just wondering if you disconected the car battery as a precaution ?
Yes, exactly. I disconnected as precaution to avoid some possible later electrical issues.
How do you get around to the top of the pipe?
I assume you tac it in place then unbolt the entire exhaust and do it on s table then bolt entire pipe back onto the manifold
Bend your rod if you can
I almost never run 6013 but I'm going to try it on my exhaust after watching this. Thanks for the video!
How did work out?
Great video.
Thanks AL B!
Very well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks for the helpful video 👍 one question, what about the fuel tank?
I will try with my $100 stick welder lol
Right on! Put it in use)
Damn good enough.
How is your welding?
@@PistonShack no welding since 97, I believe I can still do it.Good video, you said what needed to be said and got it done.
I did the same thing on my Nissan 2005, but pulled it out and welded it because I couldn't find a muffler with matching pipe size.
That's way to go sometimes) Thanks sharing WV591!
Very nice
Thanks, Joseph! How is your repair project?
@@PistonShack I have no welding experience, was considering buying a welding kit for basically same muffler job you repaired. I am in Canada they have one on sale several actually, but may just take it in to Can tire auto for repair. You need a helmet so as not to go blind, they include helmet for 349$. Without helmet couple options for 250$
I wont buy stick welder for muffler (thin) metal welding use. At that time I only had stick welder. I would better get Mastercraft 120V Flux Core MIG Welder #058-8195-2. I like this welder, it works for me. Btw, its on sale for 239.33$ in Canadian Tire.
@@PistonShack thanks so much I might just pick it up
i use a dc welder, works easier for me on exhausts, ac works too but too many holes,👍🤠
Good tip!
(if no other option) for exhaust work...stick or flux?
Nope, stick is not the best option for any body or exhaust repairs, flux core much better.
Cool thx! Just bought a stick welder, what type of mask/visor do you recommend?
Hey brotha! I have been using
Antra AH6-260-0000 Auto Darkening Welding Mask (bought on Amazon) for some time. I like it, in my opinion best deal for your buck.
what would happen if you touch the car or the exhaust with the other hand if you did not rubber gloves while welding?
Well, nothing would happen in this situation.
So best setting for exhaust pipes is 70?
Depends, I would try lower 70-75 AMPS to keep heat down.
This is a stick welder?
Nice work. Good to go for another while.
Yes indeed!
didn’t know GSP knew how to weld
hahahahah
Next time make sure you tell everyone to disconnect the car battery 😉
I thought he did at 0.25 minutes?
Can you do it with 7018?
Hey Jeremy! Well, you can but use 7018 but I would recommend 6013. 6013 and 7018 electrodes do not share many qualities. E6013 has a rutile flux, while E7018 is a low hydrogen rod. The E6013 is used almost exclusively for thin sheets, while the E7018 can handle thicker metal, a wider range of materials, and has better strength.
@@PistonShack I want to try stick welding on my car in a number of situations, from chassis to exhaust, so the difference between rods is very useful information. Thanks for sharing.
Where is the gas tank?
Tank is on opposite side from exhaust pipe.
Straight pipe that truck and then your muffler wont be a concern
That's a great idea. Thanks, Cory!
Leaking pin holes? lol
Nope, all good so far!
Good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
