Super fast bike could revolutionize transportation

  • STORY:
    It's certainly a head-turner. Whizzing around the streets of Berlin - this is the "ErockIT". Half-bicycle, half-motorbike, Stefan Gulas has been working on his invention for the past four years:
    [Stefan Gulas, ErockIT Inventor]:
    "It's a motorbike and in a certain sense it's also a bicycle, because the motorbike works as a bicycle. So you have to pedal in order to travel forwards. The pedals act as a type of accelerator. So you don't have an accelerator on the handlebars but you have to pedal. And the quicker you pedal the faster the motor goes."
    And this pedaling also charges up the bike's battery. Gulas is convinced the ErockIT - which can travel up to 80 kilometers, or almost 50 miles an hour, is a transport revolution.
    [Stefan Gulas, ErockIT Inventor]:
    "The thing I'm most proud of is that we've managed to make a cool electric vehicle. There are lots of vehicles with petrol engines that are cool - you just need to go and take a look at them, Ducatis or cars like Porsches and Ferraris. They're cool vehicles, but they all have petrol engines."
    The bike may have the looks. But it seems people don't quite know what to make of it.
    [Martin Alridge, Likes ErockIT]:
    "From the speed, I'd say it's a motorbike, but he pedals it, so it's a push bike. So it's a bicycle. But an amazing thing, absolutely amazing. I want one."
    The others who want one should be prepared to dig deep into their pockets.
    An "ErockIT" costs 30-thousand euros - or around 44-thousand U.S. dollars - and customers have to put down 25 000 euros when they place an order.
    For his part - Gulas says he expects the bike will appeal to creative, successful, people.

    For those who don't know, electric assist bicycles have been around for many years, long before this guy built his vehicle. But his is not a bicycle. It's an electric motorcycle, because of its speed, power, and heavy construction. The pedals are really just for show. It takes a lot of power to overcome wind resistance at that speed, and the amount he is contributing with his pedaling is insignificant. It's really just an electric motorcycle with an unconventional throttle control. On electric bicycles, the rider's pedaling actually does provide the primary contribution to the propulsion, or at least a significant contribution.

    • @philcorris1490
      @philcorris1490 Před 9 lety +2

      The pedals are the throttle.

    • @dansanger5340
      @dansanger5340 Před 9 lety +8

      Phil Corris Yes, that's why I said "It's really just an electric motorcycle with an unconventional throttle control." The pedals are the throttle, but the amount of power being provided by the rider's legs is insignificant relative to the motor. You could throw away the pedals and replace the throttle with a traditional twist throttle without any significant effect on the performance. That's not true of traditional pedal assist electric bicycles that wouldn't have enough power to make it up a lot of hills without human power input through the pedals.

      So true. Too bad most people without a technical background do not understand these concepts. It is an obvious scam in that sense. As far as being an electric motorcycle, looks dangerous to me. Too much like a bike!

      The pedals power the alternator. Obviously, this does not provide enough power to operate this thing, but it will greatly extend its range. Energy is not free. It would give some resistance from turning the alternator.

      @JaleelJohanson62 Před 9 lety +6

      ardvarkkkkk1 Nonsense... This bike is using kilowatts of electricity to achieve the kind of performance metrics being discussed and at best the pedal input may render 100W over an hour drive. This is hardly worth the effort other than the operator is getting some exercise which is what I think the designer intended. Dan Sanger knows what he's talking about...

      +97GoldDust IBM's first computer cost $55,000, the first calculator cost $2500, and the first cars cost nearly $100,000 (by today's inflation), that is until Henry Ford found a way to produce them more effectively and the price dropped to $18,000 (today's). Initial prices for new concepts are always high, but if there is a NEED for the item- we'll find a way to make it cheaper.

      OPTIMAL GRAPHICS that has nothing to do with this electric bike. There are other electric bikes just as fast but way cheaper than this. The reason why it's so expensive is because he thinks it's "revolutionary" and people would be willing to buy it. The only difference between this and other electric bikes is that you have to pedal it to adjust the speed. It's a stupid idea if you ask me.

    • @mozkitolife5437
      @mozkitolife5437 Před 10 lety

      ***** I could define a motorbike but it was quicker to point out why this isn't. Basically anything that isn't practically propelled by human effort is a motorbike. Regarding the ErockIT, the usual right handed throttle is merely replaced with pedal action. Nothing else is different to what would be called a motorbike. A bicycle's propulsion comes from electrochemical gradients in your body and for what we call eBikes in Melbourne, some assistance from an electric motor. Even with a motor attached to a bicycle you can still propel it by pedaling. With the ErockIT, you can't (because the pedals are a throttle and I think this is the source of people's confusion). I'd like to see a TT Zero competitor waddle his electric bicycle (your definition) around the track while the rest are averaging 175 km/h. The definition is important because I don't want my safety compromised by existing with this MOTORBIKE in my bicycle lane while commuting. It's obviously quick enough to keep up with car traffic. Plus I think I'm qualified to make comment considering I ride two motorbikes (sports and trail) and two bicycles (road and mountain).

    What nobody is talking about is the efficiency of such a bike is over 100%. However, if that was to be brought up the entire project could be scrapped and the inventor killed (the fate of Stan Meyers). The laws of conservation of energy are rubbish when you have numerous examples that defy them. A law can only be considered a law when there are no exceptions.

      The motor runs from the battery, but the battery is charged by the rider. The creator never said that the bike has to be plugged in in the interview. Maybe he uses Bedini charging circuit in that that uses high frequency high voltage DC pulses to charge the battery. Pulsed DC is also known as 'cold electricity' because it doesn't produce any heat in the wires. Also, over unity effects have been observed (by people like Konstain Meyel, Eric Dollard, Tesla, etc.) MUCH is out there.

    This idea was fucking amazing, but I 100% guarantee you it was stopped in the back room by Petrodollar fags. This needs to be remade immediately. It promotes health, and is self sufficient since you exercise to go where you want, and to charge it. The price was so high because it is greedy as shit. Such an invention should only cost a few thousand to make, but is meant to replace a vehicle, so it is priced at like 10x+ it's regular selling price.
    The greed of humanity is the only thing holding the world back, this was revolutionary, but the money to be made realistically was very low, since it only appeals to the general public who can't really afford cars any more. It should have sold as it is, a really good Bicycle, and if it did, the world would have stopped using transportation by Oil, for the general public.
    Time to make one of my own over the next few years, this is great.

      It would be a powerful electric engine with a lot of storage potential, lots of rotors and such, along with the engine being able to be charged while in use, of which the system would take quite a bit to create.
      But after creation, the vehicle itself would take extremely little to create and mass produce. Remove a little bit off our stupidly high military production, and we could have a revolution in personal infrastructure.

      It's a good idea because you can move motorcycle speed without spending hundreds of collars to drive it. It's clean energy with a simplistic design, and since everyone can ride a bike, it makes sense to make it into transportation.
      The world is crumbling because of the reliance on fossil fuels to power all nations. Wars are more or less only fought to make money, and often enough, the way they want to make money is to control oil fields where they are fighting for.
      Not to say there aren't wars other than this, but they are more like skirmishes or ethnic purges by religious fanatics outside of this.

    This clip is 8 years old. Since then batteries and drivetrain components have become way cheaper.
    and most important, you can build a bike like this for much less but you won´t be allowed to use it.
    Only speaking for germany, as the builder is german, you can expect another 6-digit-bill if you want to sell and register this kind of bike.
    and btw, it sells for 13k€ now. very reasonable for a road legal 8kW build.

    So basically it is a parallel-hybrid vehicle that uses the 'driver' to charge the battery.
    However the point (AFAIK) of parallel-hybrids is that you can use a weaker/small engine to produce Input for later Output far greater than what it would normally be capable of. The reason this is a problem in this case is that the pedals are used to control (accelerate) the bike, so you can only charge it WHEN your are driving. The only way this could work is if you charged it in between uses.

Plus you can buy a modern kit with a three phases motor with the lithium batteries that can be retrofitted to any bike for less than 500 us dollars from China. And it also has regenerative capabilities to recharge the batteries. Top speed in stock trim is 35mph. So I doubt many would be bought for 40k that's just bloody ridicules. "Note" I'm not a hater. yeah he is in it to make money . he told you how to do it as well. could build it pretty cheap actually . peddling 2 wind generators most likely wired directly to a motor or converter first . motor can take more juice than the generators put out or he has a regulator top voltage or diode which is cheap and simple. it just lets so much juice go through no computers. he is making a mint . lol. I may try solar and a battery or 2 . run and electric small as possible motor . turn wind generators to a converter for the engine . connect it to a solar car conversion kit. talking to you just gave me a better idea . lol. like buying a house or farm it's easy to build on or up grade . they already made the straight lines you just go off of what they did . getting excited . he is robbing who ever buys it .

    Since this video aired, the price has went down quite a bit, according to the price on their site. From what I see, it's 13,320EUR, or 18,361USD. The price is still high, but factoring in that this bike doesn't require gas to go, I think it's a good price, especially since the cost of gas in Europe is A LOT higher than in the US. So for the people in Europe, it makes total sense to purchase something like this.

    The pedals in this thing are not attached to the drive train at all, they're just a funky art project throttle. I doubt you get enough power out of pedalling them all day to take you a half a mile.

    I can not conceive a build cost that could possibly warrant a $44,000 price tag. It's also hard to understand how energy can go from motion to electricity and back to motion with a net gain in output power. There's something we aren't being told, or this may be another miracle device that defies our currently known laws of physics.

    Under EU law, this is a motorcycle. To be an electrically assisted bicycle, the speed must be limited to under 20kph, weight is restricted, the motor is limited to about 200-250Watts [depending on local legislation] and you must pedal to accelerate. As a motorcycle, you must register it, display a plate, be insured and wear an approved helmet. You could get a very nice Yaris hybrid for that sort of money.

    The way he is pedaling, appears that he is putting in a great deal of effort to move that speed. I cycle a lot under my own power and keep up with traffic no problem. That's all it appears to be to me. It may just charge the battery only at speeds lower than 10 mph and assist you as you go faster, making upper 30's much easier to sustain for longer periods of time. With the great strides in battery making I can see this being quite a nice bicycle if it doesn't get too cumbersome.

    I take it the pedals are to satisfy some out-moded regulations. Otherwise they serve no purpose other than to add weight and complication. If I remember correctly, motor cars used in London in the early days had to carry a whip, for a similar reason.

    i didnt say that with pedals he extends his range endlessly.
    he just adds just a bit more
    it would be smart if it has variable gearing between the pedals and the generator, so for example someone who has no strong legs can go with light gearing (and of course, less charging) and someone who is fit and strong can use a heavy gearing and add more charge to the battery.

    Interesting idea. Though charging by pedaling won't get you far. A person is going to only generate 100watts or so, where as the bike is going to need 1000-5000+ watts to move the motorcycle. This is more like zero calorie ice cream, no guilt, rather than a transportation revolution. A new take on a pretty old idea. They had go-peds back in the day. Scooters that had to be pedaled to take off, so that the rider was providing that starting energy to get the scooter moving and to start the motor up which shut off every time you stopped. They were great on gas. All and all a very cool implementation.
