  • First Sgt. James Bronson served in Company D, 5th United States Colored Troops, also known as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On Sept. 29, 1864, during the Battle of New Market Heights, Va., Bronson took command of his company after all the officers had been killed or wounded and gallantly led his men through the battle.
