  • "Wave Race: Blue Storm" is an excellent and challenging launch title developed by Nintendo's "Software Technology" division, released internationally between 2001 and 2002. The third game in the series, it feels more like an upgrade to the original "Wave Race 64" that debuted on N64 back in 1996 than a sequel (with two new characters, three returning characters and characters brought over from "1080° Snowboarding"), the game has superb visuals, amazing water and weather physics, and a good soundtrack with new levels and retooled levels from the previous game. This game includes real advertisements. The first game was released for Game Boy back in 1992.
The bulk of the game consists of the Championship Mode where players play in different circuits of varying lengths to open up more circuits. This mode is where most things are unlocked and each play is a little unique as the weather and waves are random, dynamically affecting play control and challenge as well as what paths players can take on tracks. Each course guides players with buoys that must be passed successfully to clear a race and each buoys helps to fill up the turbo meter (as well as stunts, which are tricky to pull off). Missing too many buoys will disqualify the player from the race, though strategically missing some intentionally can improve lap times and help players place first, which is good because the A.I. is fairly challenging and "rubberbands" to an extent.
Other modes include Time Attack, Stunt Mode, Multiplayer and Free Roam (to explore courses and look for new routes). All of them have their appeal and even though the controls take a lot of practice to get used to and the A.I. can appear pretty cheap at times, WR:BS is one of the great GameCube titles and certainly worth owning if you're into "extreme sports" games.
This is a video of the game in action illustrating various aspects. Enjoy.

Am I the only one who thinks these graphics hold up better than many 8th gen games. I just prefer the style of 6th and 5th gen games they look way more artistically Impressive.

The lack of textures in some places + the expressive color palette really stands the test of time.

Specifically the water effects. The racers' faces are admittedly not very detailed.

Wave Race and 1080° are in the same world.
If Fox In Space can expand the Star Fox universe, who will expand the Nintendo Sports universe?

It's worth pointing out that the "original" wave race was actually a 1992 Game Boy game that wasn't released in Japan, but was released in english by Nintendo EAD. A lot of people tend to forget about it, but it's actually a great Game Boy game.

I dont know... Wave race 64 was simple with a nice soundtrack but this is maybe too saturated in terms of sounds and have more techno/dance music.
I prefer first one... More relaxing for me.

Wave Race: Blue Storm is the sequel to Wave Race 64, but this time developed by Nintendo Software Technology rather than Nintendo EAD. Yup, the same guys behind Ridge Racer 64/DS, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, Crystalis, Pokémon Puzzle League, 1080° Avalanche, Metroid Prime Hunters, Aura-Aura Climber and the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. They haven't been the same since Project H.A.M.M.E.R. got canned, and we'll leave it at that.
If Wave Race and 1080° shared the same universe as Nintendo is concerned, then Blue Storm is it. Even Akari Hayami, Rob Haywood and Ricky Winterborn took a break from snowboarding before Avalanche came around. Being a GameCube launch title, Blue Storm boasts amazing visuals and sound. Controls takes some getting used to; the feel was quite different from Wave Race 64.

+AlviEao Why did H.A.M.M.E.R. get canceled? That game really interested me, but yea.. sadly it never came to be =(

+John Carter If Unseen64's expose is anything to go by (and don't take my word for it), it was a case of internal conflict between the Japanese and Western staff at NST. It also went through several revisions, one of which included the cuter Wii Crush that used Project H.A.M.M.E.R.'s mechanics.
The gist of this ordeal is that the Japanese side stopped listening to the Western staff's input and they also fired the lead designer. Even after developers left the studio, the senior management never took any personal responsibility for the game's faults. It's hard to imagine how different things would be if the game didn't look so generic.

I remember when this game was released, I liked it a lot, though different physics it seemed compared to 64, it was still a great game. I think it was a good launch title for the GC, PS2 had Splashdown and Xbox had Bloodwake. They were all good in my opinion. Just another example that if your going to be a "console" gamer then buy all of them, not just one...
I could never see myself being a "system fanboy".

    • @xOmniCloudx
      @xOmniCloudx Před 8 lety +1

+John Carter I used to buy them all until it became pointless to do because not only do I no longer have the time to play even some of the games available for just one platform, the consoles are so incredibly similar that you only miss out on first parties. The first party titles are ridiculously minimal given 95% of all games at the very least is made up of third parties so, if you're not interested in enough first parties you don't have much of a reason to get additional consoles. There's also affordability for some people but that currently isn't an issue for me.
The PS2, GC and Xbox gen was the last time that multiplatform games were majorly different between the consoles and that third party exclusives was a major huge thing so, buying multiple versions of the same game wasn't pointless and first parties didn't even have to be a necessary decision into buying consoles at all. Parity and dev laziness have ruined the point of having multiple consoles sadly. Consoles are basically clones now *sigh*
