    Turning off the texture filter is a real pro move. It improves performance greatly and the retro textures fit the map design, with all those right angles
    EDIT: There is an alternative method to ZDL that I use, but it might be less user friendly. I create a shorcut of GZDoom shorcut, go to properties, and add the files I want into the destination text area. Many people use this method because once you get used to it, it's super fast and easy to organize by renaming the shortcuts

    • @frostgamer9879
      @frostgamer9879 Před 3 lety +1

      I suppose this system could also easily be modified to add shortcuts to game launchers like Steam, Gog Galaxy, Launchbox and Playnite

    • @lampenpam
      @lampenpam Před 3 lety +5

      texture filter hardly affects performance at all. But you should turn it anyway, as it just looks bad except with very few mods.
      Also a much better method than shortcuts are .bat files. It works just like the shortcut basically, but you can edit them in a text editor like a .txt file. Which is very useful when you have commands with lots of different wads and settings which are to be loaded at once. Editing that in a shortcut's property window can quickly become annoying the more complex your commands become.

    • @snake698
      @snake698 Před 3 lety +1

      @@lampenpam That's true generally, but not for Doom because every particle or effect is a sprite, corpses don't dissappear, slaughtermaps, etc.
      Textures don't affect performance unless you have tens of thousands of textures on screen, which is normal doom gameplay. It's as easy as doing the test on a map like nuts, or any one that lags your computer.
      Which commands do you use that are "complex"? I've never used any command other than -file to, you know, load the files.
      Anyhow a .bat is just a text file with commands, so you're taking an extra step and you're still gonna have one file per setup, same as with shortcuts. It'll make you feel more like a hacker tho

    • @lampenpam
      @lampenpam Před 3 lety +3

      @@snake698 texture filtering is an extremly light task, and it is also done by the GPU! Since GZDoom is almost always CPU limited, something like texture filtering doesn't have any impact at all. You can test it on a slaughter map yourself. Use "kill monsters" console command so nothing moves, and toggle the setting. You shouldn't see a difference in fps.
      Technically .bat work exactly the same as shortcuts, but they are much easier to edit and experiment with. Here is how my folder looks like right now: i.imgur.com/d5PvKH1.png
      I actually had more complex commands in the past. The craziest was Complex Doom Clusterfuck which came with like 16 files and it gave me errors until I figured out the right load-order.
      Anyway here are some tricks I figured out, which I think also work if you use shortcuts:
      -Using "*" in a folder destination, loads all mods inside the folder. "autoload" is the folder in which I put everything I load all the time regardless of what I play (like texture fixes, damage numbers, flashlight mods, and all these stuff can be toggled in in-game settings anyway).
      -If you put "%*" after "-file", you can use the drag-n-drop method again in case you just want to quickly play some .wad you just downloaded without editing the file.
      -using "^" is just a line break to organize your commands more neatly.

    • @snake698
      @snake698 Před 3 lety

      @@lampenpam I've tried it... I just set it up in any computer I get my hands on. You said it yourself, it depends on GPU: setting GZDoom in a computer with an integrated graphics card, for example, can make the game stutter when there's a lot on screen.
      However, my original claim is not accurate either: you made me realize now that it doesn't necessarily increase performance, it just happens that I own a lot of old desktops from offices or made from spare parts that generally have little in the sense of graphics. So turning off texture filtering might not help you indeed.
      The shorcut tips are nice. Because of how I have the directory structure I only ever used the asterisk to add the whole folder, but as you said I got used to specify the mod order and it generally works if put them in descending order of the scope of the mod (first go maps, then mods that heavily change mechanics and add enemies and weapons, then more subtle mods, then addons)
      Never tried too much mixing though, I used to play mostly mods like Project Brutality or Demonsteele in custom campaigns

Then I had a folder full of files I didn't knew what the fuck to do with, so I spent an entire evening figuring out the secrets of modded doom. Hell, I even downloaded zdl without knowing °-°. I'm glad you made this guide, the more people playing, the better for our old friend doom, rip and tear fellas

    Very nice! Btw you can also run ZDL through Steam by simply going to your game folder, deleting dosbox, copying ZDL in there and renaming the executable dosbox. This way it will count your hours played and you can even get the Steam overlay working with a little fiddling.

    In my case I switch between GzDoom and Zandronum, depending on the wad requirements or if want to play with my friends. Also, I like to use Internet Doom Explorer as my launcher because I can not only make a server and play online, but also I am able to make these wad combinations on the Single Player tab of IDE.
    This video also made me realize that I have to clean and organize my Doom folder, I have a lot of useless wads, zips, etc and it takes more than 30gb of space... I even have old versions of Zandronum, GzDoom and a Skulltag lol

    You know, if you are going to put together a video list of your favorites, you ought to organize it into multiple lists that cover your favorites of different types.
    EG, a list of your favorite spooky/horror mods, a list of favorite over-the-top mods, a list of your favorite map packs, lists for other categories like RPG-ish mods or story-driven mods. etc.
    Because honestly, not everyone is interested in all these different kinds of mods, and it would be great to have lists that say "Hey if you like this mod, try these ones!"

    Ok, the GZDOOM is short and straight to the point. Kind of wished there's a way to have a tab that you can activate when launching and or deactivate when launching the game.

    Thanks so much for making this tutorial! I've been wondering how to go about running a Doom source port for a while now and your video is really clear and helpful. I got a second-hand disc with all the wads for the original Doom trilogy today, followed your instructions with GZDoom, and I've just enjoyed a half hour of testing things out by blasting through some levels of Doom 2 and TNT. Thanks again for making this, it's supremely helpful.

    The Doom Launcher tool deserves a mention, it's essentially ZDL but better suited for more source ports. Want to launch the OG games in Crispy DOOM, Evernity in BOOM and PK3 mods in GZDOOM? It's got you covered, and there's a direct download feature from idgames if you want to play some random wads

    Mod maker here. ZDL load order is read by the Game Engine as FILO or First In Last Out. Basically the load order for modular pk3s, pk7s,, wads, and ZIP files(GZDoom and LZDoom can read ZIP files as pk3 so this is a hugely popular load medium too.) is hugely important to avoid the frankensteins from happening.
    So top is first: MAP WAD
    Second one: MONSTER Pack
    Third one: Weapons Pack
    4th is HUD mod/Gore/ Textures. but a HUD mod should always be last on the list
    That is the best way to avoid Frankensteins. The Doom Engine reads from the top line first, but spits it out the end result from the from the top line after fully rendering. Anyways with this order you can get working combos with stuff you probably had heck getting working before. And the if they don't work then they are simply incompatible.

    I love Doom & Doom II, and have been playing them since the day each came out. I have a bunch of wads and editors that I purchased on various CDs and DVDs. The point of me saying all this is that you're making the application of levels and graphics needlessly difficult. All you need to do is dump the wad files into your Doom 2 folder, then use the RUN... command in Windows, and type
    "C:\DOOM2\DOOM2 -FILE filename.WAD".
    If you have a bunch of wads that occupy different levels, you can just keep adding filenames.
    *The time this wouldn't work is if you had files for Episode 4 or above, as Doom 2 only has 32 levels.

    You can also use Freedoom if you don't have Doom. It's an open-source project that can serve as replacement for the original Doom wad, giving you access to the mods.

    Aside from ZDL and Doom Mod Loader (DML) mentioned in the comments, there's is also a server browser/doom mod loading app out there - Doom Explorer. I really prefer it over ZDL, because it has a better GUI, much like the Doomseeker, and can be used for pretty much any source port you have (and not just Zandronum, unlike the Doomseeker).
