    Excellent points made throughout the whole video.
    I recently went from Leica M 240 (M6 in the old days) to micro 4/3 Lumix GH5, GX8. Many reason why I did it, but the key motivation to change (NOT downgrade) was flexibility (do a lot of wildlife photo requiring long tele-lenses) and the lenses own"issue".
    Your point about one's individual taste in "a" lens is perfectly true, and well expressed in the video.
    I would add to this that one's tastes also changes with time - 25 years ago when I bought my M6 + lenses, I absolutely loved the sharpness of Leica (21, 35, 50, 90 macro), and yes, one could objectively see the difference in the overall rendering compared to my previous Canon FD lenses. That rendering was what I was looking for at the time.
    Now, 25 years later, on my Lumix cameras, I absolutely love the rendering of my Voigtlander 17.5 mm f0.95 and my 30 year old Soviet-era Jupiter 85mm f2 and I, totally unexpectedly, now find the Leica lenses too "clinical" or too "clean", for my liking. It is just a personal matter/taste, not a judgement on the lenses.
    I also love to go back to full manual focus and metering - the good old f/16 of Patricia Caulfield books in the 80's! Half the lenses I am using (including Canon FD 400mm f4.5 and Leica R Apo-telyt 280mm F2.8) allow me to do that!
    To some of the comments I have read - "I have a Leica body, then I need a Leica lens", I would agree but I would suggest , for some subjects, to try to borrow some 3rd party lenses and see the alternative view of the world they can give you. For some subjects, the Bokeh of the Jupiter is for me, through the old fashioned inherent imperfection of this lens, something I will never get from a Leica lens - it is too perfect - and at the end, for $236 and 16$ tax import in the UK, it is not that painful to have try!

    The best thing about this video, beyond the great content, is how well lit this setting is. Just look at it: a huge exposure difference between interior and exterior. Glass everywhere. Strong backlight hitting the subject. Radical color temp difference. All of it very naturally and seamlessly solved.

    Lenses are more valuable than cameras bodies. You can invest in an expensive 50mm 0.95 noctilux and it will retain its value for years while continue using in a new cameras bodies while cameras get older in technology and devalue very fast...
    I have never understood why some street shooters buy a Leica M and use it with a cheaper 35mm voightlander. I would rather expend the money in a 35mm summilux or summicrom and buy a second hand leica M body if is the case...

    • @ejbernal2
      @ejbernal2 Před 7 lety +3

      The Law of Diminishing Returns. While the Summicron is a better quality lens, is it really worth 3x the price of a Voigtlander in terms of quality? I'd say that the Voigtlander is about 90% of the Leica, and it's about $1500 less.

      The 50mm Zeiss 1.5 Sonnar has amazing character with many imperfections but it has character. The 35mm Voigtlander color skopar is also wonderful. I use it in the streets and am really happy with the results. I love lenses with a strong character. I will buy an M10 because of the better low light and wireless but stick with my lenses and be happy.

    Sharpness is not an exclusive quality for a photography. Just one part of it. That is one reason I love 50mm Summilux new version with 45cm close focus. The dreamy look and bokeh is gorgeous. I also use the Noctilux 50mm f0,95 for special creative productions of mine. A different character. With my M11P i dont need nd filters with the 1/16,000secs electronic shutter when no movements in the frame.

    No camera lens company gives a description & purposes for its lenses only the technical details. If you want to know what a lens is for or like then you have to research often conflicting reviews from different people. What you said about the vogitlander in this video review I have not read anywhere else but suspected it.

    I don't understand why anyone would cheap-out with Voigtländer lenses on an M9. Lenses are free compared to an M9, and cheap lenses compromise the M9's quality.
    The Voigtländer 12mm, 15mm and 21mm lenses work poorly on the M9. Forget them. Their rear nodal points are so close to the sensor that they have red-tinged left sides and blue-tinged right sides. It's nasty. They work great on film, but forget it with the M9.
    The M9 is programmed with profiles to work perfectly with all current Leica ultrawides, so they are not a problem. The M9 has no such firmware for use with lesser lenses.
    Honestly, do you have any idea by how many thousands of dollars a year your M9 is depreciating? Do you realize that lenses only go up in value? The silliest thing people do is buy fancy cameras and cheap-out on lenses. Do not buy Voigtländer lenses to save money. Only buy them if they do something Leica can't.

    Anyone even considering leica lenses is rich as hell, so no point of trying to save those people from buying an expensive lens instead of 90% quality 10x cheaper alternatives.
    For those who want's to sell their kidneys for leica lens: No, you won't notice the 10x quality difference.
    if I show multiple photographers a photo and I say "this photo is a focal length between 24-50mm guess which one it is" I guarantee you, many won't guess the right number and here we are talking about "the lens ChArActEr"

    The main reason to step into the Leica system is of course their legendary glass. I started shooting 40 years ago with a Leica III of 1936. Went through Canon-Nilon analogue and digital bodies and recently bought a used m-240. My most used lenses are Leica branded M lenses (35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/2.0, 90mm). Sometimes I need a 21mm. I bought a Voigtlander Ultron and for the 2 a 3 times a year I need it it fulfils my needs. I recently had the opportunity to test the CV Nokton 50mm f/1.5. I was very surprised by this lens. For some it is a blasphemy using non Leica glass on a M body as Oz pointed out every lens serves a purpose. We have the opportunity to delve into legacy Leica glass, Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses why not. Looking at MFT charts is boring and not every aspect can be quantisised into numbers. As an analogy with audio systems a system with perfect technical specs can sound flat a system with mediocre specs can sound open with more life etc. It is te same with optics.

    I totally agree with you.
    Also I think that if you invest in a leica body around 6000€ new , why put a cheaper third party lens like voightlander or carl zeiss when this camera is made for having the best results with leica lenses. Leica is famous for its lenses, not for its sensors, there are better sensors from Nikon , Sony or Canon but the difference is that leica has some of the best lenses ever made and the so call Leica look is due to its lenses and how they are optimized for the best results with its sensor, so why expend 6000€ in a Leica to take a picture with a lens that does not perform like expected.

    • @GuillaumeRx
      @GuillaumeRx Před 5 lety +1

      Lol. Coming late here, but Voigtlander is the oldest name in the photography industry. The first brand to have ever created lenses. It's a german brand that has also been owned by Zeiss, and that is today owned by Cosina, a japanese company (and the Japanese and the Germans have the best reputation in the entire industry).
      So, you can stay biased all ou want towards Leica's marketing and reputation, but at the end of the day, Voigtlander builds some of the most qualitative glass in the world for a reasonable price. No marketing bullshit, just incredible optical and build quality.
      Not saying Leica is shit in any way, they obviously produce outstanding products. But don't imply putting Voigtlander lenses on your camera is the same as wasting your body. Leica certainly produce the best lenses in the world with Zeiss and Voigt, but the Leica bodies nor the lenses are worth their price. If you have the money, go for it! But having to use the two other best lens brands in history (Zeiss and Voigt) should never be a concern. As said in the video, no lens is perfect, but a lens can be perfect for your needs.

    You have put your finger right on it. This whole question bothered me a great deal over the last year since I bought my Leica X113, the image quality was astonishingly good and 3D compared to the flat sterile images I was getting from my NIkon D7100 with G primes. Frankly the image quality was dreadful and reviewers suggesting that all these image aberrations could be removed simply in Lightroom filled me with dread. No prime lens should have more barrel distortion than a cheap 80s zoom or massive colour fringing. These people dont seem to understand that all image processing degrades the image, there is no substitute for good lenses with interesting characteristics. Long story short, I have dumped my modern Nikon kit and bought a D700 to use with my FM2n and my lovely old well corrected Nikon legacy glass. For my modern needs i have bought a Panasonic GX7 and a set of Olympus primes to complement my Leica. If I want to play with old leica fit lenses i can use my Leica M3. There is a reason why older film lenses are often better corrected than modern lenses, an enlarger doesnt have a Lightroom button to correct the image ;-)

But I do love old lenses there is something tangibly lovely about them and the images they produce. Modern lenses are so in your face, harsh and unrelenting. I bought a very expensive Sigma Art 8-16mm and after 2 years havent used it once, guess which lens is next for sale - sigh

    Thank you for the review and the information on characteristics of each lens for their construction. Same length with same specifications may produce totally different results. That does not mean one is better and the other not so. But as a image maker it's for the person behind the camera to chose what image characteristics we're looking and chose right lens. Expensive or not is secondary, whether the lens chosen meets your purpose does matter.

    Mr Oz this is an issue I debate with myself each outing , which lenses to take the new or old. I have one of the lenses you mentioned , the Meyer Gorlitz Trioplan 50mm 2.9 with its unique bubble bokeh and the Helios 44-2 with its swirly bokeh is the most popular video on my channel . their character is what I need sometimes. other times I need sharpness in the corners wide open and I use the modern aspherical panasonics when doing product shots.. when i first got into photography i wondered why a person would have over 20 lenses, now I know lol, carry on.

    • @CzornyLisek
      @CzornyLisek Před 7 lety +1

      Helios 44-2 simply have physical vignetting(do not confuse with light falloff or vignetting) and most lenses ever made have it(usually the longer focal length the less physical vignetting lens have) As it's very expensive(larger elements, needed better correction) to made lens that do not have physical vignetting. Also people for most part like such bokeh so manufacturers don't even feel pressure to correct for that and it made life for them easier(easier to design lens and cheaper to produce).
      Meyer Gorlitz Trioplan have simply undercorrected(for background) spherical abberations(also it's badly corrected for chromatic aberrations). Again maaaany lenses also show such behavior(for example already mentioned Helios 44-2).
      Any aspherical element can be replaced with spherical elements with no harm to sharpness ect. Can even made it better as allow to use different type of glasses to correct chromatic aberrations and if for example 1 aspherical equal 2 spherical those 2 spherical can be moved independently if lens is design in that way, such making those 2 spherical lenses infinitely variable aspherical equivalent.
      So why aspherical lenses are made.
      1.) Can made lens shorter if design properly and with such purpose.
      2.) If such lenses are molded not polished to shape it safe money as less elements are needed and less assembly work.
      3.) Marketing

IM impressed , you know much about lens technicality, good to meet you , its interesting because Ive never heard of a school that teaches lens design and formulas so its always interesting to listen to the theory of how they are made and why. by the way Ive found the Jupiter 8 also has a bubble bokeh but not as brilliant as the Trioplan and my copy has probably no coating so it hazes over when pointed into direct light. Im learning much experimenting between new and old lenses. respect

      Actually I don't have engineer in optics. And I was fired from mechanical engineering because I made one mistake on math test(And I will try pass that test next year if health issues won't stop me). More of me being interested in topic than anything else.
      About Jupiter 8 Your Jupiter may even by Zeiss or Leica made and there are many different types/series of Jupiter 8. It is also type of triplet(Trioplan is simplest triplet possible) but much much more complicated thus can be made better corrected overall(but ofc don't have to and back then I don't think anybody was running optical calculations for Jupiter 8 on military or university supercomputers and there is so much calculations that humans can made). About coating dunno Maybe it is coated on front lenses but modern sensor behave like rainbow mirrors so flare(haze) can actually be from light reflected from sensor. If it is coated lens should have reflection of some colour(fiolet, green, yellow ect.) if not it gonna be just +/- white reflection.

    Well, I can agree that in portraits it may be better having more sharpness in the center than in the corners, although you already shot at wide apertures to get bokeh, so why it would be preferable to have less sharpness in the corners? Besides, for landscape photography and other types, I personally prefer having maximum sharpness across the whole frame. In fact I do prefer having maximum sharpness regardless the type of photography I'm doing. Like you said, it all depends on personal tastes, it's all a matter of personal preferences.

    Thank you for saying this. Today's photographic community had lost sight of the artistic characteristics of a lens and just go down a technical list. Lens X has faster aperture? check, Sharper comers? Check, sharper wide open? Check. less distortion? Check. Is the most expensive? Check. I guess it's better than lens Y. But when you say Lens Y has better color rendition, better bokeh, better contrast, is more than sharp and corrected enough for even 60" gallery quality prints they can't see it, down play it (especially the bokeh) and even claim micro contrast and 3d pop don't even exist. All so they can fell secure in the fact that the lens they spent hundreds thousands more on is the "best" even though due to being designed to win meaningless test chart comparisons it produces flat, overly corrected, low contrast, low saturation, low micro contrast, muddy images and is a giant heavy boat anchor. Cough Nikon 105mm f/1.4E and sigma 1.4 "Art" lenses Cough

    I am not sure one opinion--based on experience as a photographer--will fully settle any debate about whether other camera lens makers can fully take the place of premium priced Leica lenses.
    Yet we know even vintage Leica lenses sell for more than their new counterparts such as Voigtlander or Zeiss. A photographer will look at price vs performance and conclude an alternative camera lens performs well enough. If you are dedicated Leica fan & user, you may be convinced you can see better performance & clarity. But if you never told viewers what lens you picked, the results would be pleasing enough.

I still don't know which is better My experience with Leica is that the color was beautiful and for that reason alone I would pay extra for it. Back in the 1970's I had an M3 with an f/2 35mm Summicron from the 1960's and the images were stunning. I would love to have that lens today but don't have a clue what to get since eveything today is digital. At least back then Leica was the best.

    Good review / point of view! Recently I had the chance to test the Zeiss 35/1.4 lens, which sells for less than half the price tag if the Leica 35-FE Summilux. I found it's performance quite admirable, perhaps on a par with Leica's earlier 35/2 lenses, personally I attribute that due to a warming of the colors. The Zeiss was bulkier that the Leica lens, yet it is a good lens with its own unique character.

      @LeicaReview  Před 4 lety +1

      Dear Dan, yes, we would love to provide you with side by side photos, take the lens out to take pics and talk about it on location. Here is something for you to take into consideration.
      Those things that you have requested take more time, a longer video does not receive views which means it gets buried by CZcams stats. This means next time someone searches for anything Leica titled it will not be found. All the effort would be wasted.
      But more important, most viewers like yourself don’t know what goes into producing a video, you might say so and so does it why can’t you do it. Well let me clue you in,
      firstly the weather needs to favor you, that means sunshine, not rain, here in Vancouver each month is marked by 28 days of non-stop rain. Try getting a model out to photograph in the pouring rain.
      Secondly, a sound tech is needed, $300, a camera operator, $300, an assistant $150, a model, $200. Total, $950.
      Then the video needs editing, Video editor, $400. Now the total is $1,350.
      Before you yell out but you make money from CZcams. Yes, we do, it averages about $148 dollars a month. YES, A MONTH.
      Oops, we just lost $1,200 per video.
      But what about the rental of all of the gear, cameras, lenses, computers. We did not even factor that in.
      My time, NOT even considered.
      Then, I would ask you, how much did you donate to our channel?
      Did others donate to keep it up? About $40 a month in total. That is the reality.
      Why do I do it because I love Leica lenses and cameras.
      Of course, we could sugar coat Leica Lenses and other products from other companies and get sponsors. Then we would be like other channels that praise B’Cezusss out of lenses.

    Very simple. if you have two photos one with each lens. No one gonna tell you or say that had that photo been taken with Leica much expensive lens it would have won world press photo award and just because its not shot with expensive lens so you lost your chance of winning the world press photo award. You know what i mean here...... No? let me explain. stop wasting your time in which lens is better and which lens is not... just buy the lens that you want to shoot with and not worried about it being broken, lost or stolen. And go out and shoot, shoot and shoot more. develop on your pictures create pictures you want to and display them. If anyone judges your photos based on how much you have spend on your lens they are not photographers nor artists. A small example.... i spend days and days researching between either 100mm Canon macro the cheap one or 100mm Canon Marco the expensive one. I could not see any difference.... so decided to go with something that i won't be worried if it gets broken or lost. so it was 100mm macro the cheap one. and its been over two years now shooting with it giving it to clients and receiving my payments. No client no photographer ever said if the photos i presented would have been better if it was with the other lens. so bottom line. Shoot Shoot and Shoot.

  • @clydedigital
    @clydedigital Před 2 lety

    For me it's about the results. And I have to wonder if you or anyone could tell the difference if we did a sort of pepsi challenge... if you can't tell the difference consistently by looking at the images different lenses produce, then this video makes no sense. Build quality beyond a certain point is an irrelevance. As for the idea that you are paying for the brand, yes, okay, we get it... but that has exactly nothing to do with photography.

Anybody that says otherwise is lying to themselves to try to justify their buyers' remorse for having wasted such money on an inferior product. The Imatest numbers don't lie! There's a reason why Leica is using a Sony sensor on the M11. None of their products today are worthy of the asking price. There are far more superior optics being made today for a fraction of the ludacris asking price that Leica marks up their products for.

Case in point, the 35 mm F1.2 Nokton has a much closer minimum focusing distance than the Leica 35mm Summilux, the Voigtlander 35 Nokton is also the fastest 35mm lens available. All this aside from the fact that it also costs 4x less than the Summilux.
