SNL funnyman (and apparent cinephile) Bill Hader stops by the Criterion Collection DVD closet. Shop Bill's Closet Picks: www.criterion.com/shop/collec...
ALL movies have a category. HOUSE defies all description, which is VERY annoying to my logical mind. The closest description is "experimental film", but it is NOT. HOUSE shatters reality so completely, it exists in a completely different dimension. You will see threads of rationality, as your mind tries to cope, but those just disappear into thin air. HOUSE makes my mind hurt, and makes me feel nauseous, just thinking about it.
Same here, though I never realized he was such a cinephile; seeing Barry clips are also in equal measure and it's evident that Hader is first a filmmaker/cinephile before a comic actor (in his biography & interviews talking about making his way).
I actually watched SALO on a date, about 20 years ago. The girl I watched it with is now my wife. So maybe Bill Hader isn't wrong about that movie after all.
Once I actually told a coworker that "Salo" was a great date movie. I thought he would pick-up on my sarcastic tone, but apparently he didn't. A couple of weeks later, he came up to me and said, "We watched that movie you recommended. It was terrible! We stopped watching it after the first few minutes! Why did you think that was a good date movie?"
кσσкιєѕ ™ It’s just filled with a lot of butt sex and poo and all of it is rape and torture. It’s not a film watched for enjoyment, though it does have cinematic integrity
i mean that's the whole point of recommendations, isn't it? you show interest in a topic and youtube picks that up and offers more. i dont understand why people dont understand recommendations.
Dear people who have no idea what Salo or Antichrist is, For the love of God, do NOT watch those movies while on a date. Watch Teeth instead. You're welcome. Sincerely, Everyone else
I watched Spanking the Monkey with my Mom. The title was the least of the problem. From IMDB: Raymond Aibelli is a promising medical student ready to begin a prestigious summer internship. But Susan, his mother, is immobilized by a broken leg, and his father Tom, a travelling salesman, makes Raymond stay home and take care of his mother, an attractive though unhappy woman. His mother's condition leads them to a degree of immediate physical contact which Raymond finds disturbing.
This is a hilarious comment thread. It reminds me of when my teen son picked up my copy of Requiem For A Dream. He loves Jennifer Connelly. I was like "I...can't be here when you watch this".
Lol, " This is the best date movie. My favorite part is when ************************* and he comes in and finds a plate of *************************." Gotta love Bill's advice
It's so amazing to see all those big stars being interested in Czech cinema. First it was Mike Leigh who picked Firemen's Ball and in this one it's Bill who picked Loves of a Blonde. That's really cool
I hope to heaven that Criterion releases "Come and See." That film deserves it more than any I can think of. Please release that film, Criterion! I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
Osvaldo Abundis I know, right? "Come and See" is one of the only films that I've thought about every day since I saw it. It is one of those very rare films that is truly impossible to forget. Once I saw those images, I knew they were there to stay. You can tell just by watching it that Elem Klimov put a large amount of care and craft into the imagery, ugly and difficult as it is to watch at times. It leaves most other war films in the dust as far as I'm concerned, even classics like "Apocalypse Now," "The Deer Hunter," "The Thin Red Line," "Full Metal Jacket" and others. But that's just my opinion.
Haha I love how he recommends "Salo" one of the most disturbing, morally unfair, agonizing films of all time as a date movie. The girl will be out of the house in ten minutes, probably calling the police as she nervously unlocks the door.
Bill calling Salo the best date movie is the reason I would have hired him for SNL were I in the jury and had he said that to me. I had to laugh so hard lmao
House is the most fantastic thing I have ever seen and this man is the one to thank. I don’t know how I could have felt I was actually living in a universe which contained that movie having not seen it. That could not have been living.
This video is the reason I saw Salo, and now I can check it off my film bucket list and chalk it up as one of the grossest and most disturbing film experiences ever. Thanks Bill Hader ; )
If this is any indication of his taste, NEVER take Bill Hader's advice on date movies!!! There's no way Salo will get you in the mood unless you like scheisse porn. I'll stick to good wholesome date movies, thank you very much... like "A Serbian Film".
This is a video I always watch again and again. It would be fun to watch "Antichrist" with Bill Hader. Criterion needs to add "Drive", "La Dolce Vita" and "Persona" - NOW!!!
He actually talked like he wasn't a movie snob! Love it. Though I've already watched the recommended movies with friends and agree, perfect for first dates.
I friend of mine once described Salo to me and lent me his copy... it sat on a table for 3 months before he took it back. I assume it was the best decision I ever made.
The review they'd always use in Time Out whenever it played was something like "Merges political and sexual oppression in a way that prevents the audience understanding either".
I've got them all but Modern Times. It's on my Amazon wishlist. The only box sets I would go after are Vampyr, Seven Samurai and the Akira Kurosawa 25 fims set.
so perfect when Bill realized he was actually wearing a House t-shirt.
@@crapstermcduck6593 hahahahaha

Yeah no way it was planned
Literally what I came here for lmao
Bill Hader holding Salo while the Willie Wonka theme plays is the funniest thing I've seen this month hahah.
When he shoplifted it it became the second funniest
Timothy Hale 👍 Wonka music is me at any used record / CD / bookstore . Great places to seek while traveling .
God that made my whole year 😂👏
I'm your 666th like. You're welcome.
I don’t think I’ll ever get around to watching that movie
I've been getting a lot of Bill Hader related videos on my recommendations..I'm not complaining though..
Same here, though I never realized he was such a cinephile; seeing Barry clips are also in equal measure and it's evident that Hader is first a filmmaker/cinephile before a comic actor (in his biography & interviews talking about making his way).
It chapter 2
He’s one of the best...

She's a keeper!
I love this comment. I think you must stay with people with whom you can share and survive shame, fear and fatality.
Don't bear children plz

"And I always feel that a man and a woman who do not like the same films will eventually divorce" - Jean-Luc Godard
This feels like Bills friend worked at Critereon and snuck him in to the closet I love it

Successful interaction with a co-worker.
“Check out Irreversible” they said. “It’s totally a romantic film” they said
What's it about? I'm scared to Google
Sarcasm is just lost on some people

I think CZcams has fallen in love with bill hader. Welcome to the club youtube.
I liked Bill Hader before, but knowing he's a fan of House makes me love Bill Hader. I want his shirt.
+Kikyo4815 I am a fan of House as well and I also love Bill Hader.
Kikyo4815 Same
I have that shirt
Im in love more than ever
i want a shirt with Bill's face on it
CZcams's recommendations are unexplainable.
This time it's because Hader stars in the recently released It: Chapter Two.
Lol I was watching clips of him because he's in it chapter 2, now I keep getting him in my recommended.
Do you not know that Bill Hader is starring in It 2?
i mean that's the whole point of recommendations, isn't it? you show interest in a topic and youtube picks that up and offers more. i dont understand why people dont understand recommendations.
@@nikchhetri2686 people are dumb man. People are dumb.
12 years later and this is still my favorite Closet video. God bless god for making Bill Hader.
This is why I love Bill Hader he brings humor into everything.
"This movie puts me and my wife in the mood"
-- Bill Hader
This is probably the most cinematic dvd picks video ever. The cut away at 0:56 after a long beep and the slo-mo sequence at the end. Love it!
Dear people who have no idea what Salo or Antichrist is,
For the love of God, do NOT watch those movies while on a date. Watch Teeth instead. You're welcome.
Sincerely,

He was obviously being sarcastic.
+Ismael ortiz
Salo shouldn't even be in the library.
Salò is brilliant!
+Fangirl1502 Antichrist is a good film.
Yes. Thank you.
bill hader just always gave the vibe that he’s a great person to hang out with
Now we know where Stefon gets his taste.
I happened upon this video and it's honestly the funniest thing I've seen this year. Hader's description of Salo left me in tears. What a man.
I love how Bill jumps straight to fact that the person wasn't masturbating in the theatre but in the movie.
I actually watch both saló and antichrist with my mom,
It was akward as hell.
MCRparkour oh god yikes
that sounds god awful lol
I watched Spanking the Monkey with my Mom. The title was the least of the problem. From IMDB: Raymond Aibelli is a promising medical student ready to begin a prestigious summer internship. Have you got round to Blue is the Warmest Colour yet?
This is a hilarious comment thread. It reminds me of when my teen son picked up my copy of Requiem For A Dream. He loves Jennifer Connelly. I was like "I...can't be here when you watch this".
I love him. Relentlessly charming and real
This was definitely the funniest one
Oh course since he wrote for SNL and South Park no doubt about it that this guy is hysterical.
Lol, " This is the best date movie. My favorite part is when ************************* and he comes in and finds a plate of *************************." Gotta love Bill's advice
Heaven does exist. It's in that room!
brainsick213 Or it could be hell because you could be trapped in that room with all those great dvds but no DVD player or tv to play them on.
It's so amazing to see all those big stars being interested in Czech cinema. First it was Mike Leigh who picked Firemen's Ball and in this one it's Bill who picked Loves of a Blonde. That's really cool
both directed by Milos Forman, too!
Still waiting for Amadeus criterion
Love how Bill goes straight to the Blu-ray section.
You killed the Camera Man after this was done filming didn't you Barry?
Haha
I want to watch Salo with Bill Hader.
This needed to be longer.
I'm really afraid someone will actually think he's serious about those being date movies. 😆
I think he is serious
I hope to heaven that Criterion releases "Come and See." That film deserves it more than any I can think of. Please release that film, Criterion! I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
That's one of the few films that left a very haunting impression on me. An excellent film.

Yes! Also that movie is really find to get in any format. All the DVDs are out of print.
Best war film ever
Maybe you already know this but they've done that
I knew he was a cinephile, but seeing him taking Amarcord as a first choice actually impresses me. And "Salò" OMFG that kills me
When he said "Fellini..." I almost expected him to launch into Vinny Vedecci 😂😂😂
That's the same music I hear in my head when I'm in the Criterion section at Barnes and Noble.
I loved that he picked House! That movie was nuts!
Haha I love how he recommends "Salo" one of the most disturbing, morally unfair, agonizing films of all time as a date movie. The girl will be out of the house in ten minutes, probably calling the police as she nervously unlocks the door.
Roberto Acero
I haven't watched Antichrist yet, better pick it up.
+Agrippa Maxentius hes fucking joking lol
Chris Kostaras
No shit
Agrippa Maxentius Then your whole comment is redundant
Chris Kostaras
Oh blow me you aspie fuck xD
I see 8 1/2 in his hands there. Good man.
this format was so much fun, bring it back!❤
Salo is one of the few movies that I’ve just never been able to bring myself to watch, more or less on reputation alone
"perfect date movie" - that's what's called a joke, guys. he's a comedian..
Every comment is HAHA I know movie I know Salo has poop I know that not date movie hey guys did you know I watch movie
The boy loves his date movies!
Lol this is amazing. I would love to see more silly Closet Picks like this these days.
a great talent with great taste in movies.
bill hader is so cool
Criterion should add Takeshi kitano's film Hana Bi to their list
If Bill Hader could guest on Best of the Worst that'd be great thanks.
Oh my gosh yes!!
I like how pure imagination is the soundtrack to any boy's dreams coming true.
Bill Hader has a dark humor that no one would suspect him of having
Lol, love this guy. I always used that joke that Salo was my favourite date movie. Great minds
That music is probably what's going on in his head 24/7.
"Another great date movie: ANTICHRIST"
Knowing his sense of humor I instantly knew what scene from Salo he was going to describe.
Props for Green for Danger!
"These are the blu-rays?" Every episode haha
Can i visit?
He would be a good guest on Best of the Worst
I see Slacker over on the shelf on the left! That movie changed my life man!
Bill calling Salo the best date movie is the reason I would have hired him for SNL were I in the jury and had he said that to me. I had to laugh so hard lmao
"THIS is a GREAT date movie..."
then pulls out SALO hahahahaha
I'm dying over here
And antichrist lol
House is the most fantastic thing I have ever seen and this man is the one to thank. I don’t know how I could have felt I was actually living in a universe which contained that movie having not seen it. That could not have been living.
Bill has a handful of incredible works of art, yet SALO is the one that becomes his new prized possession. His golden ticket, if you will.
I once watched "Enter the void" on my first date. Needless to say I didn't get to first base that night.
There is a before and after moment in people's lives for watching Salo
Criterion is the best, but order the Korean versions from EBay. They often include the DVD extras, and you can save over 90%!
So good to see him pick Green for Danger - amazing film.
This video is the reason I saw Salo, and now I can check it off my film bucket list and chalk it up as one of the grossest and most disturbing film experiences ever. Thanks Bill Hader ; )
Justin Peterson I enjoyed it.
I love his picks! Also, does anyone have an idea where I could get that House shirt???
If this is any indication of his taste, NEVER take Bill Hader's advice on date movies!!! There's no way Salo will get you in the mood unless you like scheisse porn. I'll stick to good wholesome date movies, thank you very much... like "A Serbian Film".
So romantic!
10/10
Or maybe, being that he's a member of SNL, he's probably joking
kingofburnttoast Then he and I have something in common since so am I (joking, that is: not a member of SNL - I'm not that funny).
benmcfee There's no other way to get in the mood than firing up 'A Serbian Film.' What a beautiful, G-rated love story that one is.
Thank you, Richie, very cool.
I love Bill Hader even more. I love Hausu with all my heart!
I see two copies of Solaris up there at 1:22 :)
When he said that Antichrist puts him and his wife in the mood 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is a video I always watch again and again. It would be fun to watch "Antichrist" with Bill Hader. Criterion needs to add "Drive", "La Dolce Vita" and "Persona" - NOW!!!
That part with Salo was fantastic
I gave my late FIL the Criterion Green For Danger for our first Christmas together 15 years ago, recently reclaimed it, great movie❤
So surprised to see that on his shirt. I busted out laughing. Guess he really does fancy that movie.
what a lovable man. solid taste in films too
I'm pretty sure if a girl can watch Salo or Antichrist with you, she's a keeper.
Watched them, they're boring.

Broke out laughing when he said Antichrist puts he and his wife in the mood.
Nice to watch after Barry season 3. To know what that genius was in to
Great taste, I still haven't seem Salo, sounds pretty heavy. And that's a sick House shirt!
I love Bill Hader so much.
Yeah, I would have alot of fun watching films (particularly "art house" films) with Bill Hader.

Appreciate bleeping out the spoilers! :)

The description of Salo is hilarious
He actually talked like he wasn't a movie snob! Love it. Though I've already watched the recommended movies with friends and agree, perfect for first dates.
XD
Green for Danger is a delight. Excellent war-time murder mystery. And it's got Alistair Sim, how can you say no?
BARRY ❤️
House and Salo are my shit!
I just love these videos. more please. Criterion if for supergeeks!
OMG Mr. Hader you got a real twisted sense of 'date movies' lol
I friend of mine once described Salo to me and lent me his copy... it sat on a table for 3 months before he took it back. I assume it was the best decision I ever made.
A couple of them picked Salo. How can you watch that more than once!
Yeah, that movie is traumatizing. It's really a gut punch for me.
Once you get past having to handle the content, you can start really analyzing it.
The review they'd always use in Time Out whenever it played was something like "Merges political and sexual oppression in a way that prevents the audience understanding either".
Music by Ennio Morricone and Cinematography by Tonino Delli Colli
I've got them all but Modern Times. It's on my Amazon wishlist. The only box sets I would go after are Vampyr, Seven Samurai and the Akira Kurosawa 25 fims set.
