- Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a best-selling author and outspoken critic of radical Islam, will speak at a National Press Club Newsmaker Luncheon on April 7.
The topic of her presentation was "Clash of Civilizations: ISIS, Islam, and the West." The luncheon came two weeks after publication of her book, “Heretic: The Case for a Muslim Reformation.”

There is a muslim writer from Bangladesh Taslima Nasreen who wrote a book (Lajja which in Bengali means: Shame) about the way minority (Hindu) women were treated in Bangladesh and was critical of Mohammad in that book, she was immediately thrown out of that country. She found refuge in India but even there muslim minorities created a lot of problems for her. I believe she is in US today.
Salman Rushdie of "Satanic Verses" fame was prevented from reading a passage from that book at a book festival in India some years ago by the muslim clergy. His book is banned in India, a Hindu majority country, which until now had a governement that sucked up to the minorities.
It did not occur to the muslims that they could write another book to counter either Rushdie or Nasreen. They knew only one way of protest: the barbaric 7th century way sanctioned in their holy book: threaten or kill.
Hirsi Ali deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.
She fights for women's rights with her life. SUCH bravery and righteousness.

IN Principle, I disagree with Ayaan about reforming Islam. That is not going to happen. Who is going to do it? Muslim prophet preempted such attempts when he said:he was the last Prophet. Anybody trying to seriously reform Islam faces death.
Only thing that can happen is: countries if they are mature enough, can become secular. Like Turkey is. Like Bangladesh amazingly has become today.
That only means:you still practice your religion but keep it out of public space. A difficult but not an impossible thing to do.
I am also not so excited about Christianity coming to the rescue of Islam. West progressed not because of Christian values (as some people would like us to believe) but due to Science and Secularism.
Science took man out of superstitions and made him rational with critical thinking. Science was a way out for many in the middle ages in Europe, out of clutches of the Church and its strict injunctions, heresies, witch hunting etc etc. Europe saw bloody wars, inquisitions, burning of so called "witches" etc by the Church. What liberated Europe was Science. Once Science made sure society prospered and enriched itself, even the Clergy fell in line.
Church long held the view that world was flat and refused to believe anythingelse. Today they know the truth. Satellite pictures show earth, its shape, size and the fact that it revolves around the sun (not the other way round as believed by the Church).
So, both the abrahamic religions: Islam, Chrisitianity are on the same boat. Latter could liberate itself from the clutches of the Church through Science. Former did have a period of enlightenment when Science shone like a bright light in places like Iraq, Syria but is today disconnected with it and is sinking in the quicksand of religious extremism due to lack of introspection, lack of ability to change with the times.
Ayaan simply states the problem that Islam, as practised'followed and lived to the letter of the Quran. She is making the statement that 'if' Islam was allowed to be reformed(by mooslems), then there 'may' be a chance for peace between it and the western world. YOU state that in YOUR opinion? this is NOT possible. If you are correct? and mooslems refuse to reform their religion and its intolerant beliefs? then the ONLY solution, the ONLY action that the situation MUST lead to? is WAR. There is NO other alternative

ISLAM FORBID ANY KIND OF BODY MUTILATION. She has been mutilated not because she was muslim but because in Africa and in Asia genital mutilation is a tradition a common practice and by the way it is more common in Christian African countries like Ethioipia, Kenya, and many central african countries that are mostly christian. All hadiths are not necessarily true since they have been collected by narration and there is not a single hadith that has been written before. Many hadiths are simply contradicting the quran. That is what needs to be reviewed in Islam. Genital mutilation for women is a tradition linked to culture in some place in the world and practiced by many countries and religions. Circumcision for men is the only one authorized for hygiene reason. Jesus has been circumcised 1 week after his birth. It's a long discussion about these hadiths and if you want to know more I will be happy to tell you more.

Since FGM is happening, sex slavery is happening, be-headings, AK-47s upon cartoonists, all these violent actions are made name of Islam, it's is part of Islam. The other thing is when she pretend that Quran is written by a man. She was invited by Zakaria (see video) she suggested to Muslims to convert to Christianity because Jesus is cuddly. Now she is suggesting to reform Islam. How can an atheist who do not believe in God or any religion can reform a religion. Many contradictions in all her statements.

Ayaan does not deny that other religions practice genital mutilation,but she does believe that the size of Islam and its war against modernity where ever it exist makes it a special threat. Her belief that the Quran was written by a man rather than by a deity is not a pretence but the result of her atheism. Her advocacy for some muslims to convert to christianity is not a contradiction with that atheism. She would prefer that everyone--muslim and others, give up what she calls religious superstitution. However,being a realistic person,she understand that many people--muslim included,need spiritualism in their lives and,as such,she would prefer that that need be supplied by christianity and not by Islam. She believes that christianity, in the west,has been reformed by the Enlightenment and has gotton rid of its worst attributes whereas Islam is still a savage and primitive enemy of liberal modernity. Also,another reason why Ms. Ali would like to see western christianity compete with Islam for the allegiance of muslims is because only a religion--a better religion, can defeat another religion. Secularism can't do it. Besides christianity is wealthy enough to give Islam strong competition. Of course,islamacist will resort to violence,but they can be defeated.
She was muslim and left to become atheist. It's her right if she was not convinced. But reforming Islam as an atheist does not make sense. Atheist do not believe in any God and any religion. Reforms must come from inside and never from outside the religion. It's like Russia reforming US constitution. Promoting Christianity... why she didn't convert to it then?
