a succesful fake punt...on 4th & 23

- During the college football game between UC Davis and Montana State, UC Davis converted an extremely unlikely fake punt by running for a gain of 24 yards on 4th and 23. The Aggies took back to back penalties before the fake, making it even more surprising.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team take back to back penalties before trying fake punt lol
Big brain moves! Coach is playing 3d chess.
@Will Muny Vince Russo would be proud.
Truly 5head
Do Clemson's last touchdown against nc state
and then throw an interception on the next play.
this is one of those plays where if it works, you celebrate the genius they have as a coach.
but if it doesn't work, you question the stupidity of the head coach.
Captain obvious
@@soo1lucas I am willing to bet their fans are celebrating that call as a smart one. and I mean to their credit, NOBODY saw it coming.
Nah it’s stupid no matter the result
It's actually not stupid because if they get only 10 yards on the play the other team starts on the 35. If if they punt they probably can't coffin them below the 10yd line. Risk reward is negligible.
@@WISSPORTS16 just going for it on 4th prob higher%? what you think
I like everything about this. The Ronaldo celebration after the sack, the double delay of game into the fake punt, and the push to get the guy over the line to gain. goat sequence
Sewey
Second penalty was illegal procedure, not delay of game
the punting from the 33'
Runner had terrible vision. Goes outside to the right he gets a touchdown
Yea the Ronaldo celebration makes sense in American football cant lie
This is actually a pretty ingenious call. Even if you don't get the first down, you still are likely to get about 10 yards and the opponent gets the ball back on their own 30. Punting would give you a minimal benefit.
I agree . I can’t stand when people punt from the 40 45 yard out and then a touchback. You’re just risking the other team getting like one first down
I always thought that this is the perfect fake range yet teams hardly do it
This man right
Then just go for it on 4th and 13 lol.
All taking the penalties does is make it OVERWHELMINGLY less likely you'll get a first down, and give your opponent better field position if you fail to convert.
This could have been done to convince the other team they were going to punt the ball therfore not expecting the fake. Weather this was a good idea or not is ur choice :)
Dan Hawkins is a great small-school coach. He had great success at Willamette and Boise. Nice to see him come home to Davis, where he was a player when I was just a young lad.
What a gutsy call right there.
@Insane World bad call
I want to agree but I don't know how in the world did he do medicore with the Colorado
Buffaloes? I just cannot comprehend it.
@@edgaryzen4925 Small-school coaches sometimes have trouble handling big-school programs.
@@edgaryzen4925 consider, that it might just be the school and their handling of sports... since 2005 when Barnett left - no coach has been much higher than the most recent one (Dorrell?) in win percentage and they bought him out too... .3xx and .4xx overall win records of late... Prior to Barnett, they had 2 pretty good ones in a row Neuheisel, MCCartney
Yeah but if he failed you would call him a fool.
"I'm going to make this harder on myself so that I can rip your heart out even more later on."
THAT COACHING STAFF HAS BALLS OF STEEL
Why?
They literally have nothing to lose
@@hinglemccringleberry9389 oh my bad. Sorry coach!!
@@hinglemccringleberry9389
Their jobs.
On their opponents 40? Not really lol.
@@mattd9881 oh sorry! I forgot you are a coach
Right before the fake punt, I was telling my friend (who doesn't really know football) that they were taking the penalties so that they could put MSU inside their own 10 yard line, then they did this, every person in the stands couldn't believe it. Those penalties made it so the MSU punt return team knew that they wouldn't have a fake punt. Crazy game until the 4th
Truly creative plan to make the other team think "There is absolutely no way they're planning a fake punt." Of course if they didn't get the first down, everyone would be talking about what a stupid idea it was!
Somehow makes more sense than Hackett's offense in Denver
Doubly painful for any CU fans reading this, I’m sure.
Russ isnt so tough without Tyler Lockett bailing him out, is he?
@@IHateNicolasCage tyler lockett is worse than both denver wr's, hacketts play calling is just horrible
@@shineigami6989 you’re slow asf he’s better than Sutton and jeudy
@@nalimlattarai2873 But it's not like Russ went to a team with terrible receivers though, maybe being with a new team is new for him so he's got to get used to it, maybe he needs to have this first bad season in Denver in order to succeed in the next few years, that is if they decide to keep him for that long🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
This actually isn't a terrible idea. Montana State isn't going to expect a fake on 4th and 23, because nobody would. The ball is in MSU territory, so worst case scenario you get a solid chunk of yardage and only end up sacrificing 10-15 yards of field position if you don't convert.
this is some Disney Channel movie bullshit strat that somehow worked lmfao
That's some serious 5D Chess there, taking two penalties to get more room and then rolling with the direct snap fake that *NOBODY* saw coming
Absolutely brilliant
Bozeman gonna be drinking tonight.. I mean, more than usual, which is quite a bit.
That was one of the best set ups I’ve seen and I’ve been watching football for 44 years. Insane call. Guts!!
Damn old ass nigga
This play doesn't happen without that push by the rest of the team at the back end there
The two deliberate penalties set the trap! Brilliant psychological warfare!
I was in the stands for this game and we were all just standing there befuddled at what we had witnessed
That coach has got some balls! Great job by the team to get that done!
I would maybe do a delay of game once but not twice for a fake punt 💯
I agree, I would low-key call the coach of genius if it was just the delay of game. But the second penalty just seems kind of pointless
Second penalty was a false start (two DOG penalties back to back can be deemed an unsportsmanlike penalty). There was a video of Belichick trying to concede back to back penalties on a punt to the Jets a few years ago.
The goal was to a) give enough field position for the punter so they didn't give up a touchback and b) fool the defense into committing to the punt.
And that's why no one will remember your name
It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them.
The second was a illegal motion not a delay of game
wow that was just impressive. I like it how the whole team just comes & shoes the whole pile forward like five yards 😅😅
They really worked as a team to push that huddle another 5 plus yards. Good work boys!
Then they threw an INT the next play lmao
The commentator “ he did that on purpose” 1800 steps ahead of everybody
I’ve been waiting years, scratch that, decades for a coach/team to do this. So sweet.
See the genius there was that after taking the delay of game and false start, Davis knew a fake was the last thing Montana State would expect. So even though it was far away, he still was able to get pretty much to the line of gain before anyone touched him. Nicely done.
the punter sold that great like the snap was off made the defense lean that way
its cool to see the big sky on this channel! Go Vandals!
Brilliant call and teamwork.
So ballsy and awesome. Love it!
The team rushing in to push him for the first down, chefs kiss beautiful football 🏈 🤟
That took a whole lot of film work. The special teams coach looked at the 4th and longs that UCD would cover. Nice job.
"Leading sack master" is so funny. Yeah I'm a sack master alright.
Went to MSU but can respect the heck out of that play , good game UC Davis
Brilliant!!!! those two penalties were all part of the plan!!!
That was dope.
Nothing like the "Element of Surprise" tactic!!!
Epitome of teamwork.
Crazy
Clicked because of the title. After watching, the title doesn’t give this clip any justice lol. Amazing clip. Unbelievable!
I like that the punter helped out too
ayeee love seeing my school pop up on my recommendations
fkn hilarious. well done boyz
lining up for a punt on the +32 is insane
That's TEAM Effort right there!
0:10 SIUUUUUUUU
To be fair the probability they would run a fake was so low that they couldn't not try it.
Go Aggies!
THE SAC MASTER!
I like the use of cowbells.. hailstate!
This is why Football is AMAZING!!!
Awesome.
The leading sack master
For someone who is a UC Davis alum, this surprises even me lol
The D-Linemen who made that sack said: SUIIIIIIIIIIII
The play right after was even better
actual big brain play holy shit
I think the real “Sack Master” is the coach! Must be hard to get around with those balls of steel

Great call by the announcers too.

“the sack master”
Great example of a Rugby "maul" at the end of the play.
Do anyone know why they didn't just kick the field goal ? Instead of lining up for a punt
0:22 You could see the up man move to get the snap on the false start play.
This coach has enormous balls.
Unbelievable lol
Wow, this is the earliest I've ever been to a video.
Congrats
congrats on your useless achievement
@@pschighlights Thanks, keep up the good work.
That was ballsy.
The BALLS
Glad MSU got the win but man this play had me tugging my collar. I believe Davis threw a pick right after this so it was all for nothing.
Not to bad a play to me, if they stopped the fake, UC Davis gets even better field position then they would on the punt, 15+ yards would give Montana State the ball past the 25, where if they punted and it went in the endzone. Montana State takes over at the 25. The potential reward was definitely worth the risk.
The kind of thing you’d expect to see more in… *intramural football*
He's follows that block and he's got a TD.
I heard “swallowed up” and “sack master” in the first 15 seconds jesus
“Sack master?” Big time sus @ 0:12
Dan Hawkins we need u back in Boise!!!! Truck plays aren’t in our play book anymore 😪
New meaning to 90% mental 10% physical lmaooo
One day after I pass away I'll become the leading sackmaster in the big sky.
Playcaller has big balls here in the big sky to call that.
Either the 2nd penalty was intentional, or he YOLO'ed after taking an extra 5 yards. That is commitment to the play call.
I always thought that taking a delay of game before a fake punt would be the greatest way to set up a fake punt
yes, this. Not the "it was intentional to get 2 penalties i a row to set up a fake punt." That I don't buy.
This is the play that when it doesn't work everyone calls for the coach to be fired. "WTH was he thinking!?? What an idiot."
Credit to the rest of the team that didn't stand around and just watch and ran up and moved the pile before the ref could blow the whistle.
Great call. Even if they didn’t convert, the net loss is only about 10-15 yards if they had ejected to punt instead.
Elected *
Holy fuck. Taking the delay of game to reinforce the bluff is beyond brilliant.
uc davis really saw this guy do suiii and chose violence
“Fuck it.” -The head coach probably
It can't be done unless you do it!
Uc Davis different!
Classic lulled them to sleep with 2 intentional penalties
probably helps when no one thinks youd fake it in a million years
For those not getting it and saying it was not so great a play. The two penalties made it seem they were giving the kicker room to drop it in the 10 yard area. The other team bought into it. That makes it genius to tegraph a right hook and hit with a left uppercut to borrow a boxing analogy
Wow-- the Flop and the Turn are just setups for the River.
that was hilarious but it worked
#20 knew it was time to turn into Barry Sanders
Lol I love it.
They should’ve saw the other team was running a fake by the behavior or on the PREVIOUS PLAY…..He actually stepped over to receive the HIKE
