- Meet the Smart #1 Brabus!
It’s the top-of-the-range performance edition of the new Smart #1, but the question is, does it deserve to come adorned with the Brabus name, which is often synonymous with luxury and high performance?
Well, let’s start off with the power stats. The normal #1 comes with a single electric motor which can produce 272hp. However this Brabus edition comes with an additional electric motor on the front axel, and combined it can put down 428hp! What’s more, it also has a claimed 0-60mph time of just 3.9 seconds!
Then we have the design, and there are clearly a number of styling changes over the normal car. At the front you have two vents in the bonnet, along with a red effect on the grille and an extended front splitter. There are exclusive alloy designs included, along with an extended side skirt with some red trim. Then finally at the back the are some more visual changes, including an extended spoiler. All-in-all the changes are mostly visual, but it certainly looks more aggressive than the normal #1!
Step inside and it’s very much the same story. You’ll find smatterings of red stitching and colouring throughout the cabin, but otherwise, the #1 Brabus is pretty much identical to the normal car - but that’s no bad thing!
The Smart #1 Brabus costs around £43,000 - about £4,000 more than the range-topping Smart #1. So is it worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

This vs the MG4 X power would be great in a drag race.
i want to see it also
I’ve driven both the MG is 435 Hp 600 Nm torque the Brabus 428 Hp 543 Nm. 3.9 v 3.8 0-62 although they are both quicker. The MG does the quarter mile in 12 seconds dead. I can only estimate the Brabus at around 12.5 seconds. Even though the MG is slightly quicker and £7k cheaper I’ve bought the Brabus because the six pages of extra kit plus the added luxury are well worth the difference to me.
You buerk
If we had more electric cars on our roads, it could even improve traffic jams at intersections since they start so fast.
Absolutely
A little range test between some EVs like the Smart #1 Brabus would be a very great idea
Brabus Smart 1 gonna cost $450.000 on some countries.
@@purwantiallan5089 THAT MUCH ??? what country would put a prize that it’s as high as the revuelto with nothing !
@@purwantiallan5089 the lowest prize of it is 45k, but I think that you didn’t understand the prize, bc 450k is extremely expensive and NO one would buy it
Some of you don't know, Vietnam and Thailand has a 300% tax. So if a $50k car in US will cost $150k over there, cash only!
@@MrVuTran oof, that makes sense in that case
not the Brabus I expected😂😂 but okay.
This review has come at the right time . Am looking forward to it. Good review Matt
Looks like a cross between a mini Cooper clubman and a eqe
That is the perfect description
Basically the Mercedes EQ design team took the Mini Clubman structure and applied their design language to it. That is probably what literally happened.
@@YogMBrabus 1 also has a vibe from Wuling Motors EV.

Nice Chinese car
I know a lot of people get a kick out of the noise and the violence of an internal combustion engine, and I can't argue with that, everyone gets joy out of different things.
Personally I love being able to silently gap everyone on the road, puts a huge smile on my face every time without fail.
I just wish they didn’t make electric cars butt ugly. The Ego RS+ is my favourite road bike and that is a silent killer, the reason electric cars don’t usually invoke the same feeling is because they’re designed to just be completely stupid in too many cases.
Same, I regularly beat cars off the lights in my lowley Seat Mii electric as the instant torque totally takes them by surprise.
They get quite upset and have to blast past at double the speed limit as it hurts their pride. I just sit there laughing 😁
To those who are still wondering the ugly design of EV. They have to cary huge battery under the floor. Hence most EV are MpV or suv. Dont expect sportier EV yet
Ive got mine on order. When i test drove it, i was getting over 200 miles range easily.
2:35 you had me thinking it was the bargain of the century for a second 😂
Can tell that Matt bit tired in this vid.. have a short break/ vacation mate.. think you deserve way more than that.. you did really well on all video reviews.. take care brother!
This BRABUS 1 against MG XPOWER 4 and Wuling Air EV could be an interesting way to do a drag race.
Great looking car. This car has a lot going for it, it's an enticing option. All things considered, it's very smart in fact.
2:34 You've got to love that touch of Monty Python
5:42 Matt has a great point here, straight line performance has nothing to do with when we're talking about the true level of "performance" in a car, it doesn't matter it's an electric or ice cars. being said, we all should wait and see what the Hyundai has to offer with their N division on their EVs, especially the Ioniq 5 N!!!!
This is quite true, it’s because of weight 1,900kg if you want a fun to drive electric car then the rear wheel drive BMW i3s at 1,285kg is really fun to drive.
I have one until next week when I get the Brabus.
Indeed, but I do have an issue that nowadays people who were used to 2.0 TDI engine cars can jump into a new medium price EV and launch themself into a pole or another car in 3.7s. This EV trend is just road accidents waiting to happend!
@@garrycroft4215i3 and Brabus 1 both only weighed 1340kgs imo.
@@tavirosu25agree.
They're all grade A crapola because of EPS!
Drove one today… mental. Coming from a 6 series this was unbelievably quick.
That's probably the cleanest brabus car i have seen. They usually make cars too much over the top
Which is more cleaner? A mansory or Brabus.
"Over the top" in a negative connotation and "Brabus" shouldnt be allowed in the same sentence...
I have gone right ahead and bought it. ❤
It gonna be quite pricey man. In Australia it maybe costed $289.000.
@@purwantiallan5089 no not that much. £43,450 in the UK 🇬🇧 €48,950 EU 🇪🇺
@@garrycroft4215£43k?? damn... that's quite hefty for such a small car
My friend got one in China which cost about £33k or $41k
@@woolala3953 yes we have to pay 10% import duty and 20% tax on top. This adds £10,000 to the price.
I can't believe you didn't mention the "Sports car" noise in Brabus mode. Or has it been dropped for UK versions? We need to know.... ;-) great video
Very nice!!
Lovely car -- well thought out and a great looking bit of kit …
I sat in this and a Premium version.... The performance is interesting, but I think the biggest improvement in the Brabus is the interior / exterior styling. I'd ideally get a "Brabus style pack" on the premium car and keep the range
Just drive more conservatively when you need the range, it probably has an 'eco mode' too. I'd gladly pay the small additional 10% for the extra 150hp !
@@axiomic I know what you mean, but genuinely I wont use that much power in this. Also it means its way faster than my 911, which is a v 1st world probelm I admit!
@@ajcball haha oh poor you 😝
Well the Bravia will have the interior you want. The power when you need it. But more importantly it’s more desired model and have much better resale value.
@@axiomic I'd business lease it - given the lease prices they are not pricing in the Brabus holding its value better interestingly (tho I would tend to agree)
So the only reason not to get this car is that you have to look at those ugly Brabus logos all day that look like a five year old could have designed them
Thanks for the review much needed to make decision
A Smart with 428 hp? Mind blowing!
I wish we had the bigger Smarts in the US not just the two door. This looks so good 😢

Hi, Mat I had a thought when you comented on the vents on the upper front, 😀 put running lights in their like kit, or for blinkers 😅A Other revuers noted that the quality of the interior 😮
very nice video :D
really appreciate the comparison to ICE matt. EVs just can't cut it when it comes to fun.
now just need to convince the sig-o to let me buy the FL5, AND be lucky enough to land the lottery on one of the 19 units made available for my country.
Start adding these videos to playlists again please!! 🙏🏼
I think I'm the only person in the world who low key liked the old Smart car BRABUS version. This looks nicer though ngl.
Brabus 1 has 385bhp.
I’m a subscriber here for years and mat is the best at what he does do you agree
Matt: "No BAM BAM BAM, no fun, but still decent"
Once sat next to a black Brabus CL My first thought looking at it was if Bielzebub drove that would be his car of choice, I think they had 800bhp
Brabus CL and 1 have 300bhp plus.
Matt I believed you, now I question everything you say. That was epic journalism 😂 2:07
5:47 the volume level it’s so high, i was looking for skip button because i was thinking it’a a advertisement 😂😂
Thank you Matt❤ Rexton review when?
Fascinating
Nice car, 5 cool features are rather underwhelming! Raced one of these Brabus versions in my Born E-boost and bet it, then check its stats on my phone later as wasn’t sure what it was, and realised she was prob using half throttle and playing with me!
Brabus 1 had some nice touches like Nissan Pickup.

Hi Watson, I noticed you recently created a video on shorts of the Volvo cx30s cup holders. Are you going to release a video of the Volvo cx30?
Test driving a Smart #1 tomorrow - we'd be looking at the premium trim rather than the brabus as I really have no need or interest in that much power, plus the added expense of insurance group hike as well. It's sharing a shortlist with the new Kona and Niro EV (both of which we have driven already), I'm looking forward to finding out whether the slight e-pedal delay is noticeable/annoying...
Sat in one in the Merc showroom, and they are really lovely inside - easily the best interior of any of the cars we've looked at in that price bracket.
Hello, interested in which one you went for, I really like the top trim Kona (ultimate) but currently undecided?
I keep my 2017 smart barbus thank you 😊
hi , everyone's good evening . would like to enquire .
In between
BMW IX1 30 M SPORT and SMART BRABUS
Which should I go for ?? Thanks in advance
Hard to believe this car was actually lowered! How high was it before they added the coilovers?
Matt, can you share a direct comparison between the #1 and EX30 please?
We have got one like this. I love it.
Would you take the base LFP #1 or the Volvo EC30?
I bought two Smarts back then and used them as roller skates.
The new one is a real car
The sound is mostly hitting my left earphone for the beginning of this video - might be worth looking into!
So beautiful just im gonna say

Shades like the new mini EV. But I loved smart from day 1. It's a Brabus. Nice bit of kit.
Brabus cant modify any aspect of an EV other than aesthetics. This is not a real Brabus, its just pure marketing. Attach 4 plastic bits and some stickers and idiots will pay a lot more for it.

Porsche 919 Evo make my dream happen. ❤
Looking at my first EV thanks to my company having a salary sacrifice scheme for EVs. I was interested in the Volvo EX30 dual motor. Oddly, that car in comparable trim (Ultra), which has an MSRP just £1k more than the #1 Brabus, costs £95 more per month over the same months and mileage (48 & 7.5k). Even in a lower trim (Plus) which costs £2.5k less than the #1 Brabus MSRP, it costs £62/month more. And, they are essentially the same car, just with different bodies and interior designs. On top of that, the Brabus gets a head-up display, a display behind the steering wheel, and not just the central flat screen, and those slideable rear seats to allow leg room/boot space flexibility.
I'm in the same predicament, ie/ first ev and my company doing salary sacrifice. Just interested to know what you went for in the end, if anything? Not sure I like the interior of this as much as the interior of the Kona Ultimate, which comes out at 494 p/m for me, thats selecting black as the colour which costs a little bit more. The Kona would cost me 34 quid extea per month over this one. Really not sure what to go for!
@@Militant69 I still haven't made a choice. I was close to ordering the Smart #1 when the price jumped £120 per month in the week before Christmas! The Brabus went from £385/month over 42 months with 7.5k miles per year to £515/month!
So, I am biding my time. Prices vary almost by the week on many cars. The #3 may appear soon, which on paper I prefer over the #1. Maybe that will have good introductory prices, and I may then grab one.
Otherwise, the the price of EVs, even with the tax savings, remain high as they currently are, I may just extend my petrol car lease another year. I just got an offer to do so at £20 less per month than I am currently paying. So, £372 per month fully maintained (but not insured) for a 21 plate BMW 128ti. Maybe an EV is for me this year after all.
@@johnfranklin6394 thanks the wife and I went to see the Brabus yesterday actually. She hated it from the outside and wasn’t that keen on the inside either. Although I really liked the interior. However the boot isn’t practical for us. We can just about manage to fit the pram in, we took it with us. And there wasn’t much room left for much else. The Brabus for me is 460 p/m all in, bar paying for electric. However with the wife not so keen and the boot I’ve ruled it out. I’m looking at the Mercedes EQA 250+ now which is available with the new facelift form May time. However the price is £496. So not quite sure yet!
@@Militant69 The reasons your wife hated the #1 are the reasons I am waiting to see the #3. It looks less Noddy-car like in the photos and videos I have seen, and it apparently has a slightly larger boot. Plus, the reviews claim they have improved the ride, handling and the infotainment compared to the #1. I don't need a car until June, so I have a bit of time. Good luck with whatever you chose!

On the subject of efficiency that was calculated to only be 180 miles. Was this because you’d been launching it etc? Would it not be better if you’d reset the trip computer and drove normally ?

The answer here is quite easy. The Brabus is a comfortable vehicle with incredible acceleration. But it is far from a sports car like the Honda Type R or other declared sports cars.
