Henehene Kou `Aka - Basic Tutorial

- I had the privilege of sitting in and playing a few tunes with my good friend Kirby Keough while visiting Kauai a couple of weeks ago. One of the songs we always jam on is Henehene Kou `Aka. Ive been meaning to either do a tab or tutorial for this one for quite some time but just never seemed to get around to it.
Tonight Im posting up a video tutorial that presents my approach to the intro and verse sections of Henehene based loosely on the version IZ plays on his Facing Future CD. This video isnt as detailed as some of my previous tutorials and it still went beyond the 10 minute limit imposed by CZcams. I was hoping to be able to get it all on just one video but it didnt work out that way. I will present the solo in another video in the next few days. Though not as detailed, I believe this tutorial will give you a good idea of how Im approaching the tune and have you well armed to play it with your friends at the next club meeting or jam session.

The best tutorial out there, nailed Iz' version. Thanks dude!
I‘m so happy I found this!
Thank you so much for putting in the work to make this video. You’re a great teacher!
I love that you break everything down so clearly and you repeatedly play the parts we’re learning so we know what’s it’s supposed to sound like.
I actually have Iz’s official songbook but I was still having trouble with the bit at the end of the verse.
All these Dom vids have been so great!
Exceptional, as always, Dom.
This dude is awesome! I love it! Hene hene ko aka. Mahalo loa..
This 8 year old video is awesome. Aside from the fact that this is a catchy tune that tells the story of a streetcar ride through early 20th century Honolulu it is a great vehicle for learning to play up the neck. The verse motif can be repeated in at least three locations. The tutorial is not well organized and using it requires commitment and concentration, but I promise you that putting effort into this song will improve your skills. ...and I haven't even viewed the companion solo video yet.
Seriously the best tutorial ever
Nice tutorial, and that uke sounds like a dream!
Dom I love the tutorial and all. However what really gets me is the sweet sound on that Dominator custom you're strumming. She has really settled in nice. wow.
Thanks everyone. Nemo, glad it is helping. I hope to get the short section on the solo posted later tonight.
If you are talking about the D7 diagram at 7:42 I'm not sure what the problems is. That's one of the basic formations for a 7th chord by barring with the index finger at the 5th fret and using the middle finger on 6th fret of the C string. Then for the next movement you add your pinky to the 7th fret of the 1st A string.
Your tutorial is very helpful. Thank you.
Great tutorial. Thank you!
Your uke sounds great Dom!
Nemo, do not overdo it. I have problems with my wrist also and I'm learning to deal with it but it becomes increasingly difficult. The key, which I know is hard to do, is to stop playing when you feel the pain. And it may take longer than a couple of hours. Even if you rest for a couple hours but play the same song you are activating and using the same muscles which will continue to aggrivate the situation. Best to play something different if you must continue playing. Good luck.
Thanks David. Yes, the spruce top tenor is developing quite nicely over the last few months. I just can't seem to put her down.
Yes! I can play it now!
Love it thank you!😊
Thanks for sharing!
Definitely helps me know the uke better :)
thanks alot for this!
thank you. very helpful. hella funny, it's so hard to see your fingers exactly on the uke, but imma figure it out. again, thanks and aloha!
sic!!!! ty!!!
Too cool!
right at 6:57 it is a regular C chord. Index finger over the E and A strings (3rd fret) and the middle finger at the 4th fret of the C string and the ring finger at the 5th fret of the G string.
this is like my tenth time watching this video within the span of 2 years and have still not been able to play like domintoruke
Diego Amarillas well have you practiced along with watching?
Min Hoseok of course
Diego Amarillas aww keep trying then
Diego Amarillas dont know if that sounded sacastic or not, but it wasn't meant to be
Min Hoseok thnx
Thanks nice
I believe you are referring to the D7 chord at the 5th fret = 5655. Then add the ring finger on the 1st string 7th fret = 5657.
yes, but not 7th chords. Bb, B, and C. Can be played with full barre or as a G shape leaving the open G ring for all three. I usually mix it up.
@youwannabet9 No, a low G is not required. IZ used low G on his recording but it is not required since it is primarily a strumming song. See my response to mikejar47 above regarding the chord at 06:14. It is just a G shape starting at the 5th fret.
Hey Dom! thanks for the video. ive always wanted to play this song and now i can. i have one question though. at 6:57, what is the fingering for that chord? thanks again
It is a G7 = 4535.
@Dominatoruke sorry i still dont understand is it a g-ish chord just on the 5th fret? or a variouation with a bar i started to play a g chord on the 5th fret but with my little finger on the 7th fret of the a string
if someone could point me to a tutorial on the strumming part that would be dope
I think I figured it out. I think the verse goes from D7 to G7 and stops with a quick half-step walk up with B-flat7, B7, C7. Right?
What about the part that "goes up" at 6:15? What chords are those?
does it need a low g?
what is the chord at 06:14 that goes up
6:57
they're 16th notes, not triplets, for the record and your information. hope this helps!
What ukulele do you use? I want one with a longer neck then what I have
Hello, it is a Dominator tenor. I made it myself. It is an old one. It was the 7th tenor size I made at that time.
@@Dominatoruke Aloha Dominator, you are building your uke yourself?
Amazing! Chapeau!
You really are a master of the uke!
Any tips on getting to strum really fast like you are doing on some parts. I feel like i always am getting caught in the strings when i try for speed and know you need a lighter touch!!???
It's really difficult for me to try and help you without sitting down together and working through it.
Tuning is GCEA
I have noticed that the Glyph is getting a little dusty these days lol. I don't blame you one bit though.
Are the tabs for this version still available? I have searched on the Donimator.ukeland site but comes up empty.
AFAIK, there never were tabs for this. It was helpful to me to write out all of the tabs that appear on the screeen.
@@wal707 Aloha Peter, I did so too & it works fine to just all the # for the chords.
@@fennecabumukallalabdulmasi3867 Drop me your email and I'll send you a copy of my transcription. Happy new year
it is tenor?
+Iljas Sakeev Yes, it is a tenor ukulele.
sorry but that D7 just doesn't seem possible with the fingering given
