MSG has been proven by multiple research studies to not be bad in moderate portions (like salt), and is naturally present in some foods (such as tomatoes). The original criticism came from its use in Chinese takeaways and many racist people attached a negative agenda to its use, creating fake research papers or research papers that used 50x the amount found in food to ‘prove’ their point. Credit to Ziangs Food Workshop for teaching me this.
absolutely true, in fact I'd go so far as to suggest there's no evidence it causes any problems in high amounts except for the sodium content. It all comes from some guy mentioning he always felt sweaty after a Chinese takeaway. It seems it's quite likely there's a placebo effect as a result of a 1970s campaign in the US against Chinese restaurants and so now everyone expects it to make you feel that way. MSG is still in everything anyway, just tends to be called yeast extract now because MSG has a bad reputation
I think I'm right in saying it's a natural product sourced from seaweed? It also occurs naturally in mushrooms and tomatoes. (I think 🤔 😅) We've always got a pack in from the Thai supermarket!
Regarding the asda one being "half full" the Pot Noodle version is also only half full they wedge their noodle block at the top of the pot to make it look like more, next time you are having a pot noodle poke the noodles before adding the water and you'll see that the layer is actually quite thin. Basically Asda aren't pulling the wool over your eyes the same way the branded ones are.
When I was working away, I preferred to buy the cheap noodle packets (5 for a quid) and add some of the Chinese curry sauce concentrate to them. Worked a treat after 9 hours of laying bricks!!
A rare fail for ASDA! Value ranges can be a minefield - there's some quality stuff out there but there's bound to be some dogs too. Thanks to you, Gareth, we can sniff out the quality and then spend money on the big brands when it really counts 👍 An emergency Bombay Badboy Pot Noodle is still the best hangover cure out there for me! 😃
Gareth, On the strength of just the two vids I've watched thus far, you've earned a sub from me. I love your accent (sends me back to my comfort TV show, Heartbeat), atrocious english ;) , your mathematical wizardry, and your easy humor. Cheers from Canada!
Yep fully agree with you. Pot style noodles have a major mark up in profit. Think of what you get, remember these are not egg noodles, simply flour and water, sometimes with a little oil. The flavours that are added could fill a teaspoon, so whatever flavours you like they’re still a rip off. Buy a packet of noodles with a sachet of flavouring for 25p and save your money, remember most people have a store of different flavours in their store cupboard, you can add a pinch or splash to your noodles to create a bolder flavour.
@@coolvoice7 Better still, boil up your sunday roast chicken carcass for a few hours mix that and any chicken scraps with chopped spring onion, garlic and spices, soy sauce, add egg noodles -- boom you have a pot noodle which is actually good for you and tastes amazing
@@annother3350 yep, I do that regularly and sometimes with a hambone. A pinch of 5 spice, chopped baby corn, snow peas and half a chopped red bell pepper, something a diced chilli. It makes a snack a meal, as you say very healthy eating, low fat, low sodium and any sweetness from the veg. It’s absolutely one of my favorite late night snacks after a night on the town, it seems good at neutralising booze as well, a wonderful concoction of pure delight😃👍❤️
Chicken & Mushroom was my favourite Pot Noodle. Not had one in years mind. Again, add less water to make it more flavoursome and gloopy. Brilliant video as ever. Thanks for posting. So strangely addictive watching your vids! 🙂
Your best bet is getting the Asian blocks of noodles at about 35p each for some brands. You can see how much you’re getting and they’re pretty good on flavour in the sachets, but they don’t come in a handy pot.
You're going to be spending more than 35p if you want the noodles that are actually worth buying. Shin Ramyun is great, high quality stuff like many other Asian brands but 35p you're looking at the lowest quality stuff.
The cheepo pot noodles used to come with a sachet, on the odd occasion I’ve bought these sort noodles if I’ve gone cheap I add extra curry powder or chicken seasoning powder to give them some “extra oomph”
Gareth, you should try a pot noodle butty. Plenty of butter on your bread so the noodles melt it, let the noodles drip for a while before putting them on the bread. Its a taste sensation!
I've eaten dozens of Curry Pot Noodles with a bagel to dunk, a great comfort on a cold winters day at work. My tip, break up the dried slug of noodles with a table knife into small pieces (just push your knife in, it'll break up). Fill to a bit below the fill line with boiling water, remove the lid completely and nuke it in the microwave, job done. Great with mango chutney btw

This is an interesting one - it works out at ~58p in price for the equivalent weight (90g), so not as cheap (vs. the brand) as some of the Just Essentials range, of which I’ve learned from your videos can be 3-4 times cheaper than the brand version.
Re the sauce....I Always buy a few extra sachets of the McDonald's curry sauce and use it in the cheapie versions of these they are an ideal size also. Nah! I went right off all these noodle pots quite a while ago. I buy those small noodle 'packs' these days. Would love you to do a review of noodle packs, honest mate, they're so much nicer. One is made by 'Magi', most supermarkets sell them for around 49p. But I bought one of Tesco's own yesterday for 39p. Couple of tablespoons of sriracha sauce would sort either one out. That said, I haven't had a pot noodle for years as I much prefer the KOKA, Mama or (if there is nothing else) Maggi style noodles.
always preferred the Golden Wonder Pot Noodles, so much more flavour and the sauce is naturally thicker even filling to the fill line. do prefer a "claggie" sauce myself rather than a Pot Noodle soup lol
Many years ago i had one pound left to last me the week, i went to morrisons and bought 7 pots of chicken noodles at 8pence each , and quess what i am still here .
The Bombay Bad Boy is the best Pot Noodle by a mile hot and spicey n full of flavour. Although been on a healthy eating kick for 3 years so not had one in ages!
I've never had a Pot Noodle! Used to make them for the kids, the Chicken and Mushroom ones, and they looked absolutely vile lol Maybe one day I'll try one.
Just watched this video had a great laugh very good once again.. just a comment I have never had a pot noodle nor have I had a McDonald's and I am not young.. I always used to say to my kids as they were growing up Do you really want to eat the contents of a hoover bag lol.. Take care keep them coming..
Are your plates the grey (top) and white ones? I looked at them in ASDA yesterday but yours look just white on screen. Is it the light? As for Pot Knoodles, a chicken and mushroom one with a layer of plain Hula Hoops on top is a post-pub favourite.
Hi Gareth I’ve been to lidil and in the fresh section there’s some potato croquettes a pack of 6 very cheap for what u get I wouldn’t of bought them normally but like u say try em lol so I did. Omg u need to review them against frozen ones or some fresh from another shop was so tasty really good & im fair fussy wi my food think they was £1.9p give em a whirl mate Caz & Barry cleveleys
Tried the just essentials pot last week, it was okay, but wouldn't buy again, especially when their own brand of pack noodles is cheaper anyway. Their 66p frozen pizza however, I was plesently surprised with! ^_^
Wow looked at my one 114 g but its the KING size for a MAN. I agree dont fill to level. I buy the odd one for a snack and is not too hot for me. You need one of those bed trays on legs to higher up the food and less travel from countertop to mouth + that tray for car i sent a photo of. Enjoyed it .

Keep up the good work. It's needed in these times.
thanks for the sub, I appreciate it 🙏
I love a good pot nudle got to be a sticky Rib…. Or BBQ pulled pork… thanks again Gareth 👍👍👍
cheers pal
is the pot noodle maybe a thicker pot ? might be the exact same weight of ingredients
Nice review gareth 👍
cheers Kizzy
Couple of tablespoons of sriracha sauce would sort either one out. That said, I haven't had a pot noodle for years as I much prefer the KOKA, Mama or (if there is nothing else) Maggi style noodles.
I like a good clag on my pot noodles too. I’m sure they have two fill lines now depending on how much clag you want
Bachelors pasta n sauce cheese leek and ham is a knockout 👌
I love them I grew up on cheap noodles even tescos ones when they where 9p
always preferred the Golden Wonder Pot Noodles, so much more flavour and the sauce is naturally thicker even filling to the fill line. do prefer a "claggie" sauce myself rather than a Pot Noodle soup lol
cheers pal
Many years ago i had one pound left to last me the week, i went to morrisons and bought 7 pots of chicken noodles at 8pence each , and quess what i am still here .
The Bombay Bad Boy is the best Pot Noodle by a mile hot and spicey n full of flavour. Although been on a healthy eating kick for 3 years so not had one in ages!
Mango and pot noodle is my go to lunch when home.
My preference, when I'm a bit famished is for Pot Poodle, although it's a bit ruff!
Little tip, if you overwater by mistake, make sure all the foil is off then give it a blast in microwave, voilà back to clag.
brilliant thanks 😊
What about a comparison of the little packs of instant noodles.... I love em.
Yes good idea
I've never had a Pot Noodle! Used to make them for the kids, the Chicken and Mushroom ones, and they looked absolutely vile lol
Maybe one day I'll try one.
Thank you
great video thanks 👍 try adding some curry powder
Ok thank you
I like your mug, I couldn't get away with that in my workplace. my favorite pot noodles is beef and tomato noodle 🍜
good isnt it
Theres only one pot noodle gaz! Good review gaz. Just essentials cant get it right all the time! Take care steve.👍😊
Absolutely
Just watched this video had a great laugh very good once again.. just a comment I have never had a pot noodle nor have I had a McDonald's and I am not young.. I always used to say to my kids as they were growing up Do you really want to eat the contents of a hoover bag lol..
Take care keep them coming..
Cheers Paul you're welcome
Are your plates the grey (top) and white ones? I looked at them in ASDA yesterday but yours look just white on screen. Is it the light? As for Pot Knoodles, a chicken and mushroom one with a layer of plain Hula Hoops on top is a post-pub favourite.
yes Asda plates
@@BaldFoodieGuy Would've bought them there and then but they have a few very similar. Should have 'as seen on BFG' on them! 👍🙂
Hi Gareth I’ve been to lidil and in the fresh section there’s some potato croquettes a pack of 6 very cheap for what u get I wouldn’t of bought them normally but like u say try em lol so I did. Omg u need to review them against frozen ones or some fresh from another shop was so tasty really good & im fair fussy wi my food think they was £1.9p give em a whirl mate
Caz & Barry cleveleys
Thanks for the tip!
Tried the just essentials pot last week, it was okay, but wouldn't buy again, especially when their own brand of pack noodles is cheaper anyway.
Their 66p frozen pizza however, I was plesently surprised with! ^_^
Thanks for sharing!
It’s nice with tomato sauce my man can you review the just essential sardines I’ve got them in just not tried them.
LOVE the ones that you aren't keen on!! Very funny!! hehe!!
Where’s that person gone Gareth who said your never gonna do pot noodles on this channel great vid keep them up
Did I say that lol I've done a few noodle vids on here lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy you didn’t say it it was a person in the comments who said it
If you added a teaspoon of sugar to the cheap one would that fix it?
Please do a comparison of Asda vs Aldi!
Well done. A shake of sweet chilli sauce would do the job I’d say. Thanks
thanks
Yes for a claggy pot noodle! I'd go for the asda, purely because of the MSG.
Enjoyed it .
cheers pal, yes got it thanks
First time in a while I've seen you say the brand is best - any other major examples where for once the brand name is the better product?
I use to love chicken and mushroom pot noodles but had so many I went off them (there not great but good with bread n butter )
Cheers Gareth great review not a fan of pot Death .I see they do a pasta one now . Cheers Gareth see you soon.👍❤👍❤👍❤
cheers Steven
You need to get a t-shirt or hat with the new catchphrase on ‘it’s well seasoned’ 😂😂
haha yes its coming
Interesting, you are a mucky pup ,try wearing a babies bib next 😊😊😊,pot noodles were a treat at nans years ago ,haven't had one in ages ,now with the colder weather upon us ,might give a few ago ,thanks for the honest review 👍👍
haha yes im very mucky haha
Thanks Gareth for your honest review but pot noodles are the best ones 🤗
you're welcome
Hi Bald Foodie Guy, thanks so much for the video.
When I make a Pot Noodle, I always find pockets of powder, despite stirring the water well.
To he honest, Pot Noodles are probably one of the unhealthiest foods out there..,, but they don't 'arf taste good!
That's a great idea!
For me I can't beat the brand name one every time, I find the others a bit tasteless and rubbery lol
They can't reduce the packaging, coz people will think they're smaller!!
Now we KNOW they're much smaller!! Lol!!
Nice one Gareth!! 👍 Kx
How did you get that picture 😂
Thanks 👍
@@chrishaddow5644 I'm a member!! Lol!! Kx
