Thats because well adjusted adults arent supposed to be controlled by embaressment, envy, or amxiety. They are supposed to not have a seat at the table
Tbh I think they tried to say that just to try and piece it all together for us. Originally I don’t think they ever thought it was gonna get as much fame as it did and in turn they never planned to make a second movie
I just assumed that every one has those emotions but “botttled up” until they come out situationally. On a day to day basis, we have the main 5 that regulate us. During puberty those sub-emotions to our main ones are more prominent.
Well, a reasonable claim could be that some of these emotions are not actually present in the mines of others at the time. My evidence from the first movie is that Riley runs away from home and doesn't answer her parents' phone calls. This leads to some anxiety and at the same time anxiety among the parents, but we do not see that it has not previously been shown in the minds of the parents themselves. While you could argue that it's still a foregone conclusion if the new emotions shown in Inside Out 2 still exist in the first film, the father's anxiety really comes out of nowhere when something goes wrong, so it could be an act , which the new emotions come when something happens. But long story short, since it's just a movie, I don't even know¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is only in your teenage years that you actually experience all those emotions that Riley is experiencing so when she is older she will go back to the main five.
Riley is a teenager so those new emotions are showing up a lot more now but when she gets older they will come and go because she’s not going to be a teenager anymore just like her parents where we saw the dad’s anxiety come. It literally shows in the first movie as she grew up more emotions started showing up
That still doesn't make sense because all of the emotions they show now are emotions children also have. Kids have anxiety and envy and boredom. The real reason is that this is stuff for the plot. There's no real reason, there's nothing big behind it meaning-wise, it's just there for the plot of an animated movie.
For the people saying that those emotions only exist as a teenager: 1. I don't think they stop existing when we mature, it's more like we can control them better. 2. We see inside the mind of a teenager in Inside Out 1, and they are very anxiety-stricken on the inside about not being "cool" enough, and there were still just the five we see.
No. They were frightened to not fit in and be cool. The beginning of anxiety is fear. If you can't control your fear enough, anxiety happens. So it makes perfect sense, people just want to act like they're smart.
I saw the movie there is a video game character. It is so funny and the green girl falls in love with him, and he is really funny the way he rolls and jumps.😂💀
Maybe Riley's parents learned to suppress their other emotions? I mean, most parents would want to suppress their emotions like anxiety or envy because they fear that showing these kinds of emotions in front of their children might result in them thinking that they made a mistake or they're the reason why their parents are unhappy.
There's a simple explanation for this. The new emotions introduced in the second movie weren't relevant to the plot of the first movie, so to fully design and animate them (and hire voice actors) for a few minor scenes in the heads of the supporting and tertiary characters would be a waste of time and resources. So it's safe to assume that they are present in the heads of the other characters, just out of shot.
Exactly. Or they could not be there because they are temporary. Adults may lose those new emotions, but hey. I get anxiety and I'm an adult, so I can say it depends on the person.
@@paradoxine6287 I wouldn't even say that they're temporary. All emotions exist inside everyone, it's the person's personality that determines which emotions take front and centre, and which get sidelined. The evidence is in the first Movie. With Joy being the centre stage of Riley's mind, Sadness being centre stage of the Mother's mind, and Anger being centre stage of the Dad's mind. All 3 of them had all 5 emotions (relevant to the first movie), but it was clear which ones were more dominant in their minds. Anyone can experience Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, or Envy... It just takes a very specific situation for it to occur. Riley is young and has just started a new life in San Fran, so Anxiety is bound to set in, but for the parents, they've probably moved places several times in their life, so Anxiety will barely be a problem in this kind of situation.
Yeah, I think these are just the emotions that stay in the very back of our minds. Things that sorta just creep up on you. You don't always know you are envious of another, anxiety, embarrassment, and Ennui just appear out if nowhere too. Anxiety did say she is a big fan, so this theory wouldn't be off.
In the second movie the anxiety of Riley’s mom comes back out at one scene, which means those emotions are still there but aren’t controlling the person that much (they are probably controlling more during the puberty time)
*all of these emotions already existed it’s literally in the lore, it’s just that they never went to HQ, they were in the back of the mind during the first movie.*
Yes it doesnt makes sense but it is also stupid to judge the movie that hasnt come out yet maybe new emotions have a another headquarter or they only show up during teenage years or something
In one of the trailers we see that Riley's dad indeed has Anxiety, but I think they appear only in specific situations, in teen years ones emotions can get out of hand and experience anxiety way more often, when you finally grow up your emotions become a bit more stable.
If they only show up during teen years and that’s the reason I will be very upset because saying adults don’t have anxiety and enui two things that play a big role in mental health would be a bad look for Pixar
It's not just that we explicitly see like a dozen people's minds and they ALL have the core five in the original movie - it's also like we're pretending the climax of the first movie literally didn't exist. The ENTIRE POINT of the first movie is that Riley, as a child, thinks and feels in simple terms, and her "default" state is pure joy. She essentially sees the other emotions, especially Sadness, as obstacles in the way of Joy, or brief stepping stones back to the default of Joy (hence why Joy is so controlling.) The end of the film is Riley maturing and feeling and understanding more complex emotions - represented my memories that are no longer a single simple color, but combinations of colors. She accepts not only that she can have Core Memories other than Joyful ones, but that some memories can be more than one emotion. Would all these "new" emotions introduced in the 2nd film not fall under the umbrella of these complex combinations of emotions?? Fear and anxiety? Disgust and envy? Sadness and Ennui?
Fear and anxiety basically being the SAME bloody thing really does frustrate me. You already covered these emotions, you managed to have these five being the umbrella for the others as well. There's a reason there weren't anymore, why they were cut, because they didn't need them in the movie.
And even then the main 5 getting KICKED OUT for not being needed Doesn’t make sense. Anxiety exists because fear exists. Saying you don’t need it despite the fact that it’s the reason you exist doesn’t track.
@@MoonPhantom And the fact the film tries to frame it as "Fear protects Riley from the stuff she can see while anxiety protects her from the stuff she can't see (She plans for the future)". When in the first movie we explicitly see fear plan for the future when he makes that big stack of possibilities for the first day of school so anxiety is literally so redundant. Would've preferred if anxiety was like some sort of parasite rather than an actual emotion meant to be shown as Healthy
@@MoonPhantom im nervous about this movie being good too but take this from someone with an anxiety disorder, they are literally not the same thing. fear is a response to something happening and anxiety is the anticipation of something that could or is about to happen... and in the end, distinct emotions. it doesn't matter if it might come from the same place or brain function irl because having anxiety as a different character will be more in tune with people's experiences and how they talk about stuff like this
@@MoonPhantomthey're not the same though. Fear can be a variety of things but anxiety is... anxiety. When I'm anxious I'm not scared, I'm stressed and worried.
It shows us in later trailers that emotions can get bottled. That’s probably how they’re making up for the plot hole. Certain emotions aren’t shown because they become“suppressed”.
Oh, yeah! Before that nice concept of suppressed emotions that Inside out 2 gave, I wonder how people think how the original film suppresses certain emotions and some have hilarious takes like tying them up to a wall.
Yep, and it's perfectly acceptable to assume that the emotions of the characters in the credits also happened to be bottled, too, considering their internal strife (the exhaustion in keeping up the facade of being popular, the strain of being a teacher, etc)

@@donaldjgumpofficial5754it's subjective, both movies are fine, the lore doesn't exist it's literally an abstraction inside a kids head, new emotion fairies go pbttft
I think as she grows up, and becomes more emotionally stable, the emotions will merge back into the original five. Representing the emotional struggles of puberty.
@@PoliteSir Ah. I hadn’t seen that. Idk then. Maybe in adults they’re not always in head quarters and just pop up now and again but in teens they’re always there?
This honestly is an option Disney can go with. They probably don’t even have it planned this way lol I wouldn’t be surprised if they had loose ends but they sure could use this
i think something that's possible is that as we age, those new emotions start to merge into the 5 core emotions. Emotions like envy can be a mixture of rage and disgust. Anxiety could be a mixture of fear and sadness. As teenagers we can't control our emotions that well and they take control on their own.
Yeah but the whole point of the first movie is that the emotions work together to create those emotions and memories. This is best exemplified when joy and sadness create a bittersweet memory. An envious memory would just be the combination of, probably, fear and rage. It undercuts the whole system of core emotions.
@@BobGump-vq2jp yeah but I feel like the first movie was kinda just saying that kids can't really describe the more complicated emotions like anxiety, embarrassment, etc, and the mixing of emotions in the first movie like happiness and sadness comes to someone as young as Riley using the core emotions to explain how she feels instead of the new, more complicated emotions that we are introduced to when she gets older, to show she now knows that there are more complicated feelings that can be used to describe how she feels...sorry for the yapping btw
@@BobGump-vq2jpthe way I see it, is that when you are a child as well as an adult the emotion reactions are simple as you can fully understand/manage and comprehend your emotions once you an adult. As a child your emotions are simple and you express them simply, therefore the reason as a child and an adult your emotions are the core 5. While you are an adolescent those emotions are in a chaotic whirlwind and it rips them apart into subcategories of emotions.
I feel ya but in one of the trailers it pops into the dads head and we see the main emotions sitting there then anxiety pops out from under the desk so they may be present in everyone they’re just not in control
in a trailer it shows that her dad has anxiety, but it just pops up from under the table, doesn’t have a seat there so the other emotions probably just stay in the background in other people’s heads
Maybe they're more prevalent in teenagers and take the backseat again when they get to adulthood or something. Also maybe more anxious or easily embarrassed people have that as a extra core emotion.
In the movie you see the other emotions in the parents heads. My belief is they, at one point, also had anxiety control them. They overcame it and anxiety only serves their role when necessary.
@@aminulhussain2277 no that was a genuine question how does boredem correlate with sadness at all im bored enough to reply to your comment but im not sad
Im a teenager, I didn’t have all these emotions UNTIL my teenage years. That’s why we don’t see them early on, as a kid, everything seems magical and easy, once we get older, these complex emotions hit us and we don’t know how to handle it. That’s where the anxiety, embarrassment, and the others come in. Once you’re an adult, you’re more than likely to not experience these that strongly, as you’ve worked it out, but as a teenager you don’t know that. Edit: for clarification, I did indeed experience envy and embarrassment and boredom, but it wasn’t that present until I was in my teen years. My childhood was for the most part really good, I had little to no trauma until I reached 12-13 years old. Obviously as an adult you will experience these too, but usually by then, life has sorted out and managing all these isn’t much of an issue if you have healthy coping skills.
fair, but i experienced anxiety and embarrassment as a kid. it took longer to properly identify them, but i definitely experienced them as early as 5-7 years old. maybe it's just the bad childhood, but riley had a great childhood so it makes sense for her not to develop these emotions until puberty.
Tbh for me I experienced those emotions as a kid more and as a teen not really then as an adult I slowly started experiencing them again lol But thats probably because I never really went through a "magical face" as a kid I new everything was fake, the world is complex and people were evil
Plus, the new emotions are so easily encompassed in the core five. Anxiety = Fear Embarrassment = Disgust Ennui = Sadness The movie could easily be the core emotions fumbling with the complex new control panel, something going wrong, and them getting "scattered" all over the place, thus causing the chaotic puberty symptoms in Riley.
Exactly this. I was thinking of them like mixes of the other emotions. Anxiety is mostly fear but with a hint of disgust (of perceived failure that causes it to linger), embarrassment mostly disgust but with a hint of fear (of what others think). Envy is easily anger, disgust, perhaps a bit of sadness as well? Ennui... I'm not really clear on what it is people have said boredom sort of?... Dispondance is what I see looking at the character, which makes me more inclined to think of when the console went grey, but not as serious, because it seems to be a feeling of being disconnected from the world.
I thought everyone understood it this way, but maybe only me? I thought Riley subconsciously imagines and personifies her emotions. That's why hers looks so unique compared to how she actually looks. And then we see everyone else's emotions look like hers, but with a little detail added to represent the person as how Riley would understand their emotions to look like. She has no knowledge of other emotions when she's young so she doesn't picture them until she develops them herself. I think this movie actually made the previous one make sense, as they show that Riley is her own mind and the emotions themselves are seperate from Riley's true self. They exist to help her understand herself.
Not even, cause the movie brings up the idea of suppressed emotions. So these adults or teens could easily just try to bottle up those emotions like how our main 5 were in that one teaser.
For everyone saying that these are teenage emotions and that they'll fade away or whatever when she gets older, you do realise that adults can be embaressed. Adults can get anxious. They don't just lose the ability to feel these emotions and you don't just suddenly gain them when you turn 12 either. Hell, I remember being embaressed by things way before then. What happened is that, for whatever reason, they desperately wanted anxiety to be its own character. Pretty much all of the new emotions are just subsets of the existing ones. The ending of inside out 1 showed that life is often a mix of emotions. That was the whole point. Riley's first mixed memory was of happiness and saddness, the two emotions that are the most opposite. And then we see that many of her new core memories are mixed of emotions. What makes infinitely more sence is her gaining new personality islands, not new fucking emotions.
CZcamsrs like this r the reason why movies get bad reviews. Actually there r more islands and family Island is very small which makes so much sense since when u enter teenage hood, most of time u prioritise friends over parents. And plus the emotions r there in the parents mind too. And actually anxiety made a comment abt seeing Riley's moments which were supposed to be moments in inside out 1. So those 5 emotions might hv stayed somewhere in headquarters. I gain all the information from the clips they released
Not only that, but they also don't just appear when you are older. You can still feel anxious and embarrassed as a child. Idk why people are acting like children don't have any worries or negative thoughts, especially children growing in different environments
Yeah, Disney and Pixar have been writing sequels that throw out the point of the first movie for years. Frozen 1 was about how Elsa belonged in Arendelle even though she had ice powers. Frozen 2 was about how she didn't belong in Arendelle. Wreck it Ralph was all, "Don't go turbo! Stay in your game!" and the sequel was like, "If Vanellope wants to leave her game, you have to let her go."
i agree with you ralph breaks the internet was a train wreck but elsa has always been different from the rest of her kingdom not just because of her powers. does it not make sense to make a sequel exploring her purpose and more importantly asking the big question: why the hell does she have ice powers??
@@fnafnerd8783wanna know the worst part? Else was originally gonna be the villain in Frozen, look at early concept art for Elsa and type in villain next to her name and see what you get.

@@rakano3733 that is the message of the film and i guess you can go outside your game buts heavily discouraged besides at the end of the first movie venelope is so happy and the reason they aren’t in the second is just the very generic “oh it’s getting boring” it’s lazy and it doesn’t make sense pac-man has been doing this for forty years and he doesn’t complain. venelope leaving is almost like ralph leaving she’s the most popular racer sure her game can function without her but it can loose player base with her gone risking the game being unplugged.
Not really. I watched and not going to say much but it shows anxiety of mom and dad in the credits. I think there more suppressed when you get older but still there.
i’ll do you one better: i am telling you that i don’t understand the concept. why would they not be present in other people’s minds? i can’t imagine the mind of an adult who’s just moved across the country and had their daughter run away from home wouldn’t have anxiety, even if it’s not a main emotion. maybe i’m not seeing something but it seems like an oversight to me
In the first movie, everyone had the same emotion because not every single person is going to have anxiety like other people or embarrassment like others. They may have it, but it may not be the main emotion. Therefore, it could be in the background where we don't even see it.
Riley is a new teen in this movie. Idk if you remember, but new teens have CRAZY emotions and hormones. Adults tend to have those emotions in check and the main five would be the emotions we saw everyone else have. It makes sense lmao but also, I'm sure they'll explain it in the movie. Let's save our issues for when the movie actually comes out lmao
The thing is they don't have new emotions. Hormones cause the emotions that are already there to be more intense, which then makes it show more obviously that they are still children (ie operating with limited experience in processing these emotions, and being less affected by their intensity).
Anxiety seemed pretty relevant when that boy in the first film had the 'girl' alarm going off in his head. I'd imagine her parents were pretty anxious when she disappeared in the first film

No. They were frightened to not fit in and be cool. The beginning of anxiety is fear. If you can't control your fear enough, anxiety happens. So it makes perfect sense, people just want to act like they're smart.

They would have been relevant, but it's smart to only introduce so many emotions per movie
@@curtisleblanc5897 Yep, thanks for explaining the reason they were irrelevant to the first movie.
The final trailer confirms that they are there but not in main control
Exactly! Even if the movie might not make sense, I still have the thrill to watch it.

Like in puberty, some emotions are shown more prominently than others. Still there, but no longer at the center.
Anxiety looks EXACTLY like the Wubbox from My Singing Monsters ☺️🤣🙏
It's not just that we explicitly see like a dozen people's minds and they ALL have the core five in the original movie - it's also like we're pretending the climax of the first movie literally didn't exist.
The ENTIRE POINT of the first movie is that Riley, as a child, thinks and feels in simple terms, and her "default" state is pure joy. She essentially sees the other emotions, especially Sadness, as obstacles in the way of Joy, or brief stepping stones back to the default of Joy (hence why Joy is so controlling.)
The end of the film is Riley maturing and feeling and understanding more complex emotions - represented my memories that are no longer a single simple color, but combinations of colors.

That's what I was saying!
You have a fair point, but that also suggests that every character we witnessed in the previous film all bottle up the exact same emotions.
Yep, and it's perfectly acceptable to assume that the emotions of the characters in the credits also happened to be bottled, too, considering their internal strife (the exhaustion in keeping up the facade of being popular, the strain of being a teacher, etc)

i think something that's possible is that as we age, those new emotions start to merge into the 5 core emotions.

These emotions are really strong during teenage years which is why there only seen in the sequel
Too be fair-was i was like 6 i got embarrassed and rn (13-11 is my age) i have axienty😃
You literally see someone in that age bracket with only those emotions.... wtf are you talking about, this is a clear cash grab.
Tbh for me I experienced those emotions as a kid more and as a teen not really then as an adult I slowly started experiencing them again lol
But thats probably because I never really went through a "magical face" as a kid I new everything was fake, the world is complex and people were evil
That's nonsense. You just don't remember your years as a child that well.
Plus, the new emotions are so easily encompassed in the core five.
Anxiety = Fear
Embarrassment = Disgust
Ennui = Sadness
The movie could easily be the core emotions fumbling with the complex new control panel, something going wrong, and them getting "scattered" all over the place, thus causing the chaotic puberty symptoms in Riley.
Wow imagine anger gets stronger because of periods
oooo i like your idea that wouldve been really cool
Exactly!

No because I’ve watched it at the end anxiety comes out for both of the parents
Honestly you aren’t wrong. Ennui definitely should’ve been there with the goth person, lol
So Pixar basically assumes that embarrassment, anxiety and envy are teen-only emotions.
That’s funny.
Yup, veeeery funny. And damn i'm and old teen, 34. I completely forgot that those "emotions" are for teens, not for adults. 😶
Not even, cause the movie brings up the idea of suppressed emotions. So these adults or teens could easily just try to bottle up those emotions like how our main 5 were in that one teaser.

The main problem with this, is that it makes complete sense, you just have to watch the goddamn movie fist ;)
It's revealed in later trailers that Riley's dad also still has anxiety but not her mom.

Stay in your game!" and the sequel was like, "If Vanellope wants to leave her game, you have to let her go."
