When I was 13 and heard Revolver for the first time, I thought this is brilliant until I got to "Tomorrow Never Knows", I thought they (The Beatles) had gone bonkers. I didn't like it at at all, but it turned into an earworm and I just had to keep going back to listen to it over and over again, volume on full. My mum thought I was nuts.

Here in the US The Sound of Music has got to be one of the most commonly seen records in charity shops,or thrift stores as we call them here. Have you seen that great picture somebody did of the Revolver cover, except it was all Badfinger substituted for The Beatles? The US one you show is the Record Club issue. Thanks so much for all the Revolver coverage Andrew! Love it! To me anyway, the most important and influential album made! So many new innovations introduced on this album etc. I feel this album allowed the Beatles to make Sgt. Peppper. Without out Revolver, Sgt Pepper would not have been quite as influential as it is (yes Sgt Pepper is influential). I love Sgt Pepper. I love all Beatles music! This is just my personal observation and my research through the years. Everyone will have their own idea of what is the best etc. That's why it's so fun to talk to other Beatles fans who have a different take. I enjoy hearing why they think this album or that album is their preferred Beatles album!

3:25 as far as I know, most of those brazilian "mono" releases from Odeon are actually the stereo tapes mixed down to mono. Very noticeable on Sgt Peppers due to the sound differences of the mono and stereo originals.

Hi Andrew, I've been following your channel for a while now, today's vídeo was as good as always, keep it up! Also, I love in how these Beatles around the world videos you show different pressings with their labels. I think you noticed but maybe don't know why, the pressing from the Colombian Lp (from where I am) is only missing Yellow submarine, the remaining A side and the whole B side are identical to the UK original, this is because in here Yellow submarine was edited exclusively as a single, at least until 'A collection of Beatles oldies' was edited in 1967; Cool thing about this, its cover is drawn and shows the Beatles' faces in a Yellow submarine in the sea; I guess this might be the very first "official" art of the Yellow Submarine..?

Thanks, Andrew, great video. As I mentioned in another Revolver video comment, I have a Blue Odeon out of France that I bought in Belgium in the Eighties. What's odd about it is that the studio chatter countdown at the start of Taxman is edited out, the record goes right into that classic riff. I understand all French pressings have this anomaly, but I would be interested if other countries also have this quirk. Oh, and as for Sound of Music, I suggest you take the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, so that the hills can come alive with the sound of music for you!

Until you put the back cover text of both the UK and US on screen at the same time, I never noticed that the lettering of the word REVOLVER looks different on the two covers.
It’s not so surprising with the song list, which Capitol obviously changed. But I’m surprised at how different the title looks on the two back covers, if you scrutinize them carefully.

Regarding the SoM movie soundtrack in Europe: I remember the Trapp Familie Movie told the Story years earlier although b/w and the saccharine music like Edelweiss never made it onto German radio to my knowledge, maybe the record company missed a trick completely at that time in terms of promotion. SoM was always Hollywood Kitsch. Your revolver items are fabulous, I was 21 when I bought it in August ‘66.

That USA label is a Capitol Record Club issue (denoted by the 8 in the catalog number, not to mention the 'made under license by...' text), very cool. Great video for a great album as always Andrew.
I love that you featured some of the various pressings from around the globe. In the last few years with the strength of the internet, I have fell in love with different variations the world has to offer.
Say for example, Revolver, or any Beatles album, is a bottle of red wine. When tasting the red wine from different countries or regions, the wine will have slightly different tastes and nuances. To me, it’s the same as a record from different regions of the world.
Same songs, but different EQ, vinyl formulation, or that unique cutting that separates one from the other that makes the particular pressing unique. The Carisch mono is a good example. The mono is a stereo fold down. Although the dedicated mono is preferred, there isn’t many examples I can think of that offers the album this way.
And who doesn’t love the vintage and sometimes archaic looking labels. I also love Revolver front covers that feature the different logos from the different countries and eras.
The ST-8 Capitol Record Club from early 1969 featured was pretty cool too. Those can be a challenge to track down. There is also a green target and solid red/orange record club variations. The green target is the easiest to find. The red/orange from the early to mid 70’s is one of the harder ones to find. The red/orange Revolver was the last, and only Beatles album with this label available in the club before it folded.
There is red and purple target label reissue on Capitol from 1972 that is highly sought after that was manufactured at the Winchester Virginia facility. This label was used for the reissues in Canada. Per Allen Klein, the back catalog was supposed to be reissued with Apple labels in the US.
Very few copies of this Revolver were pressed with this label before Winchester got the memo. A similar situation at the Jacksonville Illinois Capitol plant occurred with Yesterday…And Today. Very few red target labels were pressed and got out, and now, super rare. I have the Y&T but not Revolver. Found it in the wild 20 years ago.
Sorry about my rambling. I figured I would share this tidbit with you if unfamiliar.
I love talking records and record collecting. I could do it all day! 😆

These odd variations of Revolver on Capitol are great to seek out. I have the three record club copies, but not the purple red target Revolver. When it comes to domestic releases, I still love digging in the record bins. The bulk of Capitol pressings where I live in Wisconsin are from Jacksonville Illinois or Scranton Pennsylvania. One day I may have to acquiesce and order a copy online.
I forgot to mention, all of the reissue Capitol Canadian Lp’s from 72 do have the purple target-red label. Apparently the Apple back catalog change over didn’t apply to Canada.

Another cracking dive into the Beatles pressing history. I'm sad to say my only copy is an AnTrop bootleg that came as a two-disc pair with Sgt. The new pressing's 43€ list price does give me pause, though.

As usual, wonderful vid, Andrew! However, may I nitpick a bit here (and someone else may have already commented)--I believe it's Paul playing the piano at the fade out of Tomorrow Never Knows. Btw, I greatly prefer RM11 to 8, but I have to admit the drum sound is superior on 8, but the rest of it is just too empty sounding in comparison--but then, I prefer the stereo mix anyway. I have seen some preview comments online claiming the forthcoming Giles remix is even better on this track. Can't wait to find out.

It’s pretty shameful that all record companies couldn’t just release the same albums to begin with, I was born in the 90s so I didn’t have to experience this, but Id hate to be use to a certain version to then later find out it was a butcher.
All that aside, it’s incredibly fun and amazing to hear about all these different versions today and try to hurt down them. Out of the many copies, I actually have a Columbia version of Revolver that doesn’t include Yellow Submarine. The back cover actually forgot to erase Ringo’s name in the print, so his name is next to She Said She Said with John’s name underneath

The USA market having different song titles was the norm for not just The Beatles, but other acts as well. Capitol wasn’t the only label to do it either. The album containing the single sold units here.
Some American configurations of Lp’s like The Rolling Stones Out Of Our Heads we’re released in other countries with the American London Records song line up instead of the UK Decca. The Flowers Lp that was configured in the USA was released almost worldwide as well.

While the practice became much less common, repackging and changing tracklists still happened to UK bands when releasing albuns in the US. I can think from memory: the first Clash album.. Ultravox' Vienna and way into the 90s: The fist 2 Mansun albums (funny enough they were also on Parlophone in the UK)

    • @donald60s14
      @donald60s14 Před rokem

Yes I’m very aware that it wasn’t just a Beatles thing that Capitol did. Jimi Hendrix’s debut in the US is a masterpiece.
Funny you say about it happening to UK bands in the US, the opposite seemed to happened to the release of Metallica’s 1987 EP of cover tunes in the UK only had 4 of the 5 songs.
The Clash’s UK debut is a pure Punk record as opposed to later released US version that featured Reggae tunes that the band was into at that time. But I had to rehunt down the US version because the version of White Riot is much better than on the UK LP, plus I’m wayyyy more familiar with that version

Yes, definitely. London really had a magic touch with configuring the albums to the American market. Now! Definitely works like all of the others. With those Stones Lp’s I’m so used to hearing the American London albums that when I play the UK, something seems to be missing. Especially with Between The Buttons.
The first time I bought Aftermath was when I was in high school. It was the UK. That is the exception. I love the UK Aftermath much more, along with the UK High Tides.

I like my late 70s Japanese pressing with the lovely Apple label. As usual, the insert that includes lyrics also in English has plenty of minor errors, and then there's this one: "I said who put all those things in your hair" which suggests someone sat down to transcribe it and that's what they thought they heard.
I saw you had several pressings from South America. I only once bought one: a Uruguay pressing of Help. Content and cover art was same as the UK release, but the audio quality was utter rubbish. The front and rear cover art was printed on separate sheets of thin card stock. These were laminated in plastic which was joined together to form the outer sleeve.

I picked up a test pressing of a Hollies album, Vintage Hollies, with a 1G stamper marking. It has plain white labels and is just marked with the date and matrix numbers on the plain sleeve. Is this a counterfeit as it doesn't have the Parlophone Test Pressing label? It is two single sided albums with the test tone on the reverse side of each disc. It sounds absolutely fantastic and far better than the commercially released World Records disc that I also have.

There is a Beatles bootleg with a colour version of the B & W cover with alternate takes and false starts too. There are many variations from different countries as with was the case with other artists too, which is what I like about past releases. Heard that John Lennon didn't like U.S. albums as they were butchered, but, never heard any objection about other countries. Didn't know that about 'Granny Smith' an apple reference.

Russian AnTrop didn't had any rights to release Beatles albums, this is not official release. But it's also kinda "legal" by 90s Russian law. You could release any broadcast recording for free, so you can see "Запись по трансляции" - "broadcast recording" on both labels. Cover art was recreated for the same reason - to formally avoid copyright claims for artwork. Also song titles translated to Russian. I love AnTrop modified covers, great artifact of these times. Sound quality is good too, most likely sourced from original CDs.

We are obviously looking forward to the Revolver super deluxe release. Who isn't? But we are a bit nervous; we have not been thrilled with what we consider Giles Martin's re-inventions of the previous Beatles' releases, although we THINK we understand why he did what he did. Still, it is our most fervent hope that GM's treatment of Revolver takes more of an 'active neutrality' approach. Perhaps a more delicate, less heavy-handed treatment? We will very soon find out....

11:35 - I doubt the inclusion of the scrapped mix of Tomorrow Never Knows will devalue the original pressings of the album because some fans out there would like to hear the mix in its original context. I remember being really disappointed when the mono mixes were (temporarily) reissued in 2014 and the RM11 mix was nowhere to be found. This, along with the original "promo" mix of the Penny Lane single, is not exactly going to set the world on fire, but each of the two song's rejected flourishes make their respective songs sound more complete. The released version of Penny Lane sounds like a jump cut at the end without the trumpet notes, and the early fade out in Tomorrow Never Knows sounds like a reissue. Typing those words just now, it occurs to me it actually was a reissue. When the original pressing was rejected, Revolver was REISSUED with the mix we all know and (yes, still) love.

Thanks very much Andrew! Interesting look at the variations around the world. One thing I noticed with my US copy of Revolver is that the song Got to Get You Into My Life has the drums a little louder than my German or UK pressing….not sure why. I am very much looking forward to getting this as its my favorite and needing a new stereo mix. Looking forward to your videos on this set! Thanks again

The first time I ever saw the Revolver album was the first time I ever saw the Yesterday and Today album. It was also the first time I was thinking of buying something banned by the church. And I also wonder why neither album feature Paperback Writer and Rain. I was the summer of 1966.

I had a bone to pick with the movie Yesterday, because it presented a world where the Beatles did not exist but the Rolling Stones did exist. How is that possible? It was George Harrison that recommended the Rolling Stones to Dick Rowe of Decca records. So without the Beatles, technically the Rolling Stones would not exist because They would not have had a record label

Andrew: I have an early 80’s stereo pressing of Revolver from England on the Parlophone label with the 2 EMI boxes. I bought it here in Ontario, Canada.
On the back of the jacket it says it was made in Britain and also that it was printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. When I looked at the album itself, it says on the label: Made in France.
I never noticed this before. Is this unusual or special?
