What to do with Track & Hold - What is it? Patch-tips, and how to make it from Sample & Hold!

- A few weeks ago I made a video about sample & hold, and promised to come back with some ideas for track & hold in another video. Today is that day! I'll explain the difference between sample & hold and track & hold, show how you can patch up a track & hold function, just using a sample & hold, oscillator, and VCA. And then we’ll dive into a series of patches. From using a track & hold to create interesting modulation, to self-generating melodies, and ratcheting drums.

Dude, your channel rocks!!! Best explanations and graphics. Keep on coming \m/
Hey, glad to hear it! The channel is growing nicely, and I really enjoy making these, so I plan to keep it up for quite some time! There's an entire introduction to modular series planned, allong with some really exciting sponsored products! All the best :)
Great instruction and examples. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful Woke-Ass Messiah! :)
You are hands down the absolute best person on the internet at concisely and, dare I say, beautiful explaining these sorts of fundamental concepts in a way that not only makes them incredibly easy to understand but also immediately contextualised with other processes. So good!! 🙏 🎉🙏🎉 🙏🎉
Hey, thank you so much! That's exactly what I aim to do here, and these kind of comments make it worth the time! All the best :)
This is the kind of presentation that I find most useful as I learn about the functionality of a modular synth. Great presentation. Thanks for sharing.
best channel around!
happy to hear it! I felt I could really add to the community with the addition of the calm clear illustrations. I plan to do a more complete introduction to modular series later this year! You're welcome, and thanks for watching!
@@tom.konxompax A patch for modesty I see, 😁
Joined you Monotrail on Patreon as a Hero
@@MonotrailTechTalk this Hero just joined your Patreon. The drawings make such a difference over other “patching” videos with the exception of others I have found. This is how to learn! Thank you.
@@The_Digital_Arts_World Thank you so much!
Thank you for your awesome patching ideas and clear explanations!
You're welcome! It's so nice to hear people are enjoying these, all the best!
This is great 👍 very useful
Glad to hear it, cheers!
so good!
Thank you!
Your instructional videos continue to be so impressive and helpful!
Thanks a lot, so nice to hear people apprecceate and get value out of these :)

You're very welcome, thanks for watching!

Gerne!
Hell ya, new video, and euro quarters Hopp schwyzz!!!!!!
Haha, hope some people will decide to watch this anyway :) Enjoy the games!
Hello there and friendly greetings! I am an avid VCV Rack user despite I am very ignorant about Euroracks. I have watched nearly all your videos and all the things you showed here are perfectly fit for the software I use (of course...)
So thank you so much! I have see a lot of ideas I've never figured out before! I bet I am going to have a lot of fun! :-)
Hey, thats great to hear! Glad it's giving you good value, enjoy your explorations!
amazing stuff as usual, so what do you about s&h droop? i’ve only bought one module and quickly returned it because i was totally unaware that it was a thing until i played the module.
Thanks, glad to hear it! And yes, it's a thing for sure. It really depends on what voltages you are using. Most of the time its not an issue for me, but when used with 1v/oct isgnals it's mostly to much droop to function.
great video! sounds like the T&H is holding the pitch cv without drooping pretty well? or at least well enough for the short periods of time it is holding?
Good one! I have to admit that took some experimenting, in fact it was drooping quite quickly, which is crucial for melodic purposes of course. With stepped signals and squarewaves it workd fine, with a smooth random voltage in the gate input the droop seemed to be more present. For best results it could be best to add a quantizer after the track & hold circuit!
Isn’t a track and hold the same as a VCA with a gate?
Hey there! Not really, A VCA with a gate will result into "track" (follow the incomming signal when you feed the VCA a gate) and "0", a 0 volt output if the VCA is closed. So it wont "hold" a voltage when you close the VCA.
I get it now! Thanks! Awesome channel!
