- We can't believe it's been one whole year since we first bought our 1.5 acre off grid property here in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal. We began with no idea what we were doing, but as the year progresses we gain more confidence and can't wait to turn this stone barn ruin into our dream tiny home.
If you'd like to support our project then we'd be so grateful if you bought us a 'Kofi" (which will go towards our latest project, whether building the house or working the land): ko-fi.com/fran...

Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.
In South Africa, a solution for reducing heat in a dwelling is to add a fly sheet roof a foot or so above the building roof using metal or plastic sheets - like an umbrella- by putting up four poles a little bit bigger than the building, a framework and the sheets. This pulls breezes through and is very effective. Just an idea.
Love this idea! We’ll give it a go on the cabin next summer! Thanks!
I really love that you started with the garden, not just the house. That's what I would have done. Congratulations on all you've achieved!
Thanks so much Beate, the garden is the thing I’m most excited about ☺️🌱🌸🪴
@@FrankieOffGrid I really get it. Growing stuff is amazing. Also it takes time to establish food gardens, new trees and fertile compost and soil. The longer you put your love and effort into it, the better the results. Good luck with year 2.
Congratulations on your Barn Conversation and new Olive 🪴 garden. You have proven yourself-selves trust worthy by your Neighbors. You are being Excellent Stewarts of the Land. Your Love and general care are already rewarding your Love with Bounty and Love ten fold.

Your doing so well. One step at a time is all it takes, But don't forget to take time out for yourselves to enjoy life together with your animals.. I am so happy for you both..
The vibes and piano music is so nice and relaxing and suites the apnessphere.
Absolutely fantastic video, so good to look back on your beginnings here in Portugal, great things to come!! And can't wait to help you guys with all of that stuff❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ps so good to see another hardworking couple, proving everyone wrong😍
Ahhh thanks Nick and Andrea, we wouldn’t have got anywhere without all your help 💛💛💛💛 can’t wait for next year
Thank you/diolch for looking after my daughter and teaching Iwan life skills. I was so upset at not being able to come out for their journey due to Covid19. It has made me feel so much closer watching all the CZcams communities working together.
@@nickytanton107 lots to come!! I promise ❤️ can't do enough for people who are willing to help/ learn and reciprocate, without being asked, absolutely love these 'ellers'
The more you work on your property, the better it will become. Do you have chickens? They are fond of bugs and tics. plus they give you eggs. even if you don't eat eggs, they are a source of income down the road. I enjoy the journey you chose for yourselves.Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much ☺️ we’ll be getting some next year! We eat a lot of eggs, and they’re so good for the garden. Eventually we’d hope to get some ducks too! X
Was so nice to watch a recap of the year. Hope you do one each year.
What a lot you have accomplished in the past year. There's no limit to what you can accomplish in the next year.

You achieved so much in a year so happy for you,and you two are so down to earth kind of people, well done!!!!By the way how did your wine turn out?
Thank you!! The wine has come out quite well so far. We’ve bottled the red and some of the white and just need to film a little tasting session. The video should come out in December 😉
Amazing that you were able to establish a productive garden by April and you have another spring season after the summer. It so makes me want to live in warmer clime to UK.
You made so much progress. Thank you for sharing.
Are you heading back to blighty for Christmas?
Thanks Noddy! We’re hoping to go back for a couple of weeks but we’re going to have to play it by ear with covid etc.
I'm absolutely delighted to have been able to share this journey with you two: it really has been great. The land, the garden, the fruit, veg, bugs, wells, the trees of all types, the weather, the building, digging, pointing, the construction of a whole new bedroom, the wine making and many more things has all been very very interesting, but the stars of the show are to be found at 13:14 and 13:24. Especially 13:24 Albi flat out and upside down on the sofa next to a few cans of Heineken ... Carissa's alter ego
Wow just wow love the not produced style of video , just like old school home video the lighting in some shots is just beautiful
You have come along way in12 months love frankie
Thanks Martin ☺️ 🐶 💛

Congratulations on all you've achieved! a tip on the water tank if you put a black tarp over it you won't get algi. You certainly had a very busy year. What are the names of those beautiful two toned orange flowers in November you are showing. Would love to plant them this summer here in England.
Great to see all the work, time and effort was definitely worth it. Getting the extra land must have brought peace of mind as well as extra olives and grapes…I look forward to next years but will of course be watching on a weekly basis.
Greater transformation is coming next year, I am sure. Very happy for you this winter is much more cozier and toastier 😁😁💟
100% can’t wait for next year! We’ve learnt so much this year 💛 thank you ☺️☺️
Congrats. Lots and lots of work, well done. Beautiful outcomes.
Thanks so much ☺️ can’t wait until next years projects!
Congrats. You’ve done brilliantly
Happy Landverrsiry, loving watching your journey 🌴☀️🏡🇵🇹
What a great 'diary' of your progress !!! One tip learned from Theo. Whenever pointing he recommends spraying the wall with water in 'manageable sections' ( so it does not dry before you reach it. This helps the 'mud' from adhering to the wall.
Thanks James! That’s one tip we learnt from Theo too! It makes it so so much easier!
I mis-stated....water helps the mud adhere to the wall.
Congratulations you achived lots!.. Wow Amazing. Keep up the good work. Take care.👏❤
Thanks so much Maria ☺️☺️
Great work, it's really come along quite nicely over the year.
Thanks Helen, I feel next year will be even more successful ☺️🌸
Even though I’ve followed along on your progress, it was really cool seeing it in one video. Happy Portugal anniversary, you guys. You are doing great. 👏👏👏
Thanks so much Alice, it was fun to put together and look back over the year, thanks for following our journey and here’s to next year ☺️ 🥂
Loved the music during august
Loved the content guys ! Well put together .. the land is looking great , you’ve come so far in such a short space of time .. keep up the good work it’s going to be a beautiful place when visited 👍
Thanks so much Dave, can’t wait for next year and applying all we’ve learnt this year ☺️
When grouting between the stones is there a tool like an icing tube which could squeeze the mortar into the gaps? It might be quicker and easier. I know some tubes are larger and some of metal...might be worth a try. ❤️🇦🇺
I have one for them, hope they come home so I can give it to them. Please Covid19 don't cancel xmas.
well done and congrats on all you have achieved so far, l love your channel and l love your calm souls too
Thanks so much Wendy 💛💛🌸
you guys can achive your gols easily i love watching your videos stay safe.

Congratulations on a year well done! Besides olive’s do you have other fruit trees on your land.
Pear, apple, figs, lemon, orange and lots of quince, they also have cork oak which they sold for 40 euros. I have probably missed a couple.
Thanks Billi ☺️ we have a couple of figs, apples, pears and lots of vines. We’ve planted some citrus, peaches and cherries so hopefully we’ll have more fruit in the years to come 🌳
Hi love your videos! Can you tell us a little bit about the zone you are living? Are there villages around or a bigger city for supplies etc? Or are you really far from all that?
Thanks Brigid. Sure. We’re able to walk to a bar/cafe/shop. And Castelo Branco is about 20mins away from us.
The cat spread eagle
Supernice video with lots of interesting stuff. Would it be possible to do any cooling during the summer, while off grid?
Thanks so much ☺️ we’re working on making the buildings cooler with insulation which will make a big difference to our comfort in the summer. I think you could get air con with a big solar power system
@@FrankieOffGrid Simpler solution would be to dig down a long pipe underground, and make it come up inside the floor to suck air through this pipe. Then a small black pipe through the roof/ceiling to suck the hot air out. This will drag colder air from the underground pipe. It needs to be pretty long, like 20 meters or so with air intake at the end. The deeper, the better.
welcome ;) !
Where about in Portugal are you? Im from around Miranda do Corvo but m=now live in Ledbury, Herefordshire near the Welsh border. best regards... Manuel
Hi Manuel! We’re just outside Castelo Branco in the Beira Interior. How’re you finding Herefordshire? It’s a beautiful part of the country!
@@FrankieOffGrid been here 25 years so not bad. I would love to find my little heaven place in Portugal like you and many Brits do. One day
Are you also making olive oil with you olives?
They have! 🙆🏻♀️
They just managed to get their own oil other wise as a co-op it would be mixed with others, 500 was the goal.
We have Pearl ☺️ there’s a video all about it here: czcams.com/video/Xz3DQ53o5sM/video.html
I hope u r using that straw whilst making your veg patch
Hello...
Just found tour channel.
Where does one start looking for land like this?
Do you recommend agents or websites?
There’s a message from Ricardo Souza that you might be interested in.. it’s a bit more recent than yours
I think remax is probably the best website. Otherwise your best bet is to pick a rough location and have a good look around, you’ll likely see stuff that won’t be on the websites
@@FrankieOffGrid ok thanks 🙏🏻.
hola chicos podeis ponerlo en español gracias
must use lime not cement in the wall
Haha or not. Maybe we’ll stick a lime in the wall for good luck
@@FrankieOffGrid lol I mean lime mortar bcz old building need lime mortar as the cement will damage the stone wall
