  • Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance and disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater and Billy Zane as Rose's fiancé, Cal Hockley. Jack and Rose are members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. Revisit the movie in 3D this time.

the Prince of Egypt (1998) had a lot of CGI sequences and they all still look amazing and awesome so yeah, they definitely did already have good technology back then. The Lion King (1994) also had a CGI sequence, even though predictably the technology wasn't this advanced yet. And The Lord of the Rings came out in 2001 aka only 4 years after Titanic, and it was praised left and right (rightfully!!!!) for its sfx, and it still looks pretty believable (as believable as an epic fantasy saga can be) to this day.

Oh 1997 had its share of terrible CGI (Looking at you Volcano, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, and Batman & Robin). All three of them had some of the WORST CGI compared to Titanic).

She could act on a stupid raft talking to herself in the middle of the ocean and she would make the audience cry. Greatest actress being supplemented by a 200 millions dollars budget movie well crafted and nicely directed with good supporting actors. That's what this movie is for me. KATE WINSLET is TITANIC!

It’s amazing how the VFX done in 1997 are better than some of the VFX done in movies nowadays. There are so many recent movies where the CGI is so obvious that it’s sad. I watched a few clips from Mary Poppins Returns and the scenes where the characters are interacting with animated characters is so obviously fake. The animation scenes from the 1964 film was better, and that’s sad when you think about it.

this is one of the scenes that was really obviously made with CGI. Watch the original movie when it zooms out from Jack and Fabrizio to Captain Smith and Murdoch coming out of the command room - you will see Murdoch 3d model movement really poorly done :) And then if you look at the other people on the ship you will see the same uncanny valley effect on all the passengers. But OK, it was 1997, but once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it :)

*comes 5 years late with starbucks* yes, the research put into it, costumes and details and the WORK behind it were fantastic but honestly I have a huge bone to pick with Rose and Jack, mostly because the Titanic's (and its passengers') story was already interesting enough without shoehorning a corny romance in it, especially because said romance became like 99% of the movie's essence when imo it should have been mainly about the tragedy and it should have told more than one story because there were more than a thousand people on there. It's really a shame and a missed opportunity because the more you read about the ship's passengers and the historical context and the ship's building and the tragic chain of coincidences that led to how things went, the less interested you're going to be with some basic love story that could have been on any other movie. Like, the Carpathia speeding across 40 miles and dodging icebergs to rush to the aid of the Titanic even though it was theoretically impossible to get there within a useful timeframe... she was only showed en passant at the end of the movie, with no mention to its crew and its own passengers offering their clothes and anything they could give to help the survivors. I really, really am irritated because this movie could have been so much better narratively but no, it became just another (completely made-up) tragic love story between a bored rich girl and a commoner. And it really missed the chance to tell something about the historical event, aside from "it hit an iceberg and then snapped in two and sunk".
Also, I really would have no qualms with not hearing that goddamn song ever again for the rest of my life.

@@ManubibiWalsh I would have enjoyed it if it was just Rose or Jack alone. I questioned myself weeks ago why it had to be her telling the story, forgetting she was just another survivor like the other 700 people. But the romantic story was definitely unneeded here. We should be talking about a ship that went down and took 1500+ people with it, not some lady cheating on her husband for a homeless guy just for him to die.

Avatar was a very thin story. The only advantage that the movie had was that it was the 1st new real 3D movie.

Watching it now the people on the deck look like old school video game characters. The way they walk and the lack of detail is so obvious to our modern spoiled eyes.

It was right before swarm technology that Peter Jackson was developing for LOTR. It would have looked better with that

@MsAsiangirl89 Jack wasn't real.... But the real rose's body was never found, so maybe she survived and changed her name to Dawson.
