Northern Central York 17 - Reign of the American

  • Since 2013 the Northern Central Railway of New Freedom PA, formerly known as Steam Into History, has operated the old mainline from New Freedom, northward to Glen Rock and Hanover Jct using a brand new built 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive, the 'York' 17. This majestic 4-4-0 was built in 2013 in Elgin Illinois by the Kloke Locomotive Works for use on the NCR. The 2021 season saw the return of the NCR's line beyond Hanover Jct and the town of Seven Valleys, to the famed Howard Tunnel, and station name sign 'Hyde', the end of the NCR's line at York, Pennsylvania.
    In 2021, Dynamo Productions ran a photo charter to Howard Tunnel to take advantage of the newly restored line. This year, we ran yet another photo charter on the NCR to the tunnel - and beyond, using the freshly restored wooden D&H gondola for the NCR's first ever mixed train charter.
    With all day rain and downpours, the foul weather made for dramatic scenes of Civil War steam charging through the Pennsylvania countryside. The 20+ photographers and cinematographers were treated to a dawn to dusk battle of 1860s steam power and the weather. The event went beyond, into the night, for a night session at both Howard tunnel and Hanover Jct where the haunting whistle of the 'York' sent chills into the night as she screamed along the old Northern Central.
    We run the charters at Dynamo Productions as a public outreach program for the railfan community. We do not operate charters to make money, even when we sell an event out, we operate at a loss. These events are purely for the love of steam, cinematography, and the community of railfans we are all a part of. A huge thank you to the 30+ participants who joined us for the NCR and M&H charters in 2022!

    God, the thing I absolutely adore about these 1800's locomotive was that they always kept them so CLEAN! Then again, these engines were sort of the poster children for the railroads they worked on. Great video!

      They made it as far as they can, station sign Hyde marks the end of the line the NCR currently has trackage rights on. Beyond that, into York City, is Genesee & Wyoming trackage. York Railway.

      Actually this is shot in 2022. In addition to producing documentsries and railfan films, we specialize in recreating eras on the railroad with lighting, props, actors, and the trains and locomotives all coordinated by our team to replicate long gone scenes of ralroading how it used to be. Last week we recreated 1955 on the 3-foot gauge East Broad Top Railroad for a group of about 30 railfans, photgraphers, and cinematographers.

    It's hard to believe how far the Iron Horse has come since these old locomotives first hit the high iron. Even the crazier and more advanced locos, such as the Big Boy and even diesels can claim heritage from the old 4-4-0s. 0_0

    2:30 how fast was York running that part? The stack talk surprisingly sounds like a 1900’s steam engine at speed.

    • @DynamoProductions-trains
      @DynamoProductions-trains  Před rokem +3

      Fast. Not certain of an exact speed, somewhere about 25mph. People have long underestimated the speed and sound the York could produce. We hope this charter will dispell some of that.

    • @TKSP4449
      @TKSP4449 Před rokem +1

      @@DynamoProductions-trains I think the same can be said for any other mid-to-late 1800's steam locomotive in general.
      But then again, I think see why they wouldn't be able to go that fast nowadays (or at least for the original locomotives). It takes plenty of boiler pressure for them to travel up to that kind of speed, and if they tried to reach that amount of pressure on such an engine like the V&T's Inyo nowadays, it'd probably cause a lot more wear or damage faster and eventually render the locomotive no longer able to operate at all anymore (not unless you were to build the engine a new boiler, unless you'd rather keep the original to as to maintain its authenticity).

    • @JohnDoe-bl7gj
      @JohnDoe-bl7gj Před rokem +1

      @@TKSP4449 Actually, the closer to top speed a steam engine runs, not including high speed engines, it uses less steam. The cylinders are moving faster so the inlet valves can't be open as long.
