  • In this video, I'm going to show you the features and give you my thoughts on the Naturenest Roof Top Tent. I've spent about 20 nights in it so far, so I've got a good idea of the pros and cons at this point.
    For a really reasonable pricepoint (about $1500-1600 shipped), this is a great option for folks looking for the benefits of a hard shell clam style roof top tent.
    Again, check out the full video for all the info!
    If you want your own Naturenest RTT, here's a link to the tent I have: amzn.to/3O2GCl0
    Here's the other variant of the tent with the awning just off the back if you prefer: amzn.to/3O2tw7a
    A few people have asked about mattress upgrades. Here are two I can confirm work.
    So, if you want one that fills the tent completely the Sea to Summit is super comfy. It's also on sale for 25% off on Amazon right now but I'm not sure for how long: amzn.to/3UF58ga
    I mostly go solo, so I'm currently using a Hest Foamy Wide Mattress (78" by 30"): bit.ly/4dMvunv
    And here's a link to the patch panel I attached inside the tent: amzn.to/45tYDPD
    Here's a link to a ladder bag that I picked up to keep the inside of my tent clean: amzn.to/3sLHqmz
    Here's the sleeping bag I keep in it: amzn.to/3Za4M1j
    Here's a small camping pillow that I like that would fit: amzn.to/3QZzDLU

    I got my NatureNest in March and have 15 nights overland camping in it. It's a terrific product, and why anyone would spend another $2,000 for essentially the same RTT is beyond me. I am 5'11" and I sleep comfortably. Above 6'2" any wedge shaped RTT may be a challenge (unless you're sleeping alone in it, then plenty of room to lay on the diagonal). Rest assured, this is a quality product which I never take off my roof.

    Hi there. New to your channel and I appreciate your review of the Naturnest. Just wondering though , other than design as you mentioned what made this particular one stand out over the other similar designs? Have you tried others before and just wasn’t impressed or maybe they didn’t live up to their $$$.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 10 měsíci +5

      Hi, good question! I've had 3 roof top tents. One that was cheaper (not a hardshell, with a soft cover that was a nightmare to put on and take off, especially in the cold), another one that was similar in design to this but was almost twice as expensive, and then this one for just $1500ish shipped.
      The biggest standouts to me are that it comes with a condensation mat (none of the other ones I've had had that and it helps with condensation and water to keep your mattress dry), the dark material is really nice to help you sleep better, and the overall design (including the awning that goes over all the windows) really makes it a great value with year-round usability, which is what I was looking for.
      It definitely makes me question some of the prices of roof top tents because I can't imagine they're are 2-3X better, quality wise to justify the price. Hope that helps!

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Most likely, you would need some sort of upgraded roof rack to be able to take the weight of this tent or similar tents. The most important thing to look for are stats on your dynamic and static roof rack limitations. If you can find that for your vehicle and it’s significantly more than the weight of the tent, you might be fine but you’ll want to do some research.

      Personally, when I switch from my 180 to a 270, I'll likely be running the Openroad 270 awning because it's about $500 for a 270 and it's free standing (link here: bit.ly/3VUqeqM). Hope that helps! Lots of options, :D.

    Hi, great video. Quick question: are the top and bottom sheets made of aluminum or ABS?Are the top and bottom rails aluminum as well? I'm a window cleaner and want to camp after work...I'd be attaching a 60 lb ladder to the roof racks and want a solid mount. Other than that I'm sold on it and am awaiting your reply before I buy. Thanks!

      Hey Mark, the top and bottom of the clamshell are aluminum and pretty solid. The roof racks are also aluminum including the brackets that attach to the side of the roof top tent to support the top rails. I’ve got a solar panel mounted on mine and it doesn’t weigh 60 pounds but it’s super solid.

      I actually camped last weekend in the low 30's, but I had a diesel heater running so dry heat and no condensation at all. It even poured down rain overnight, but the diesel heater kind of solves all those problems. I've been out a few times with just a heated blanket in 30's and low 40's and there is some condensation after a night's sleep, but the condensation mat keeps it off the mattress and I just open up the tent the next time there's a nice day and let it air out. No issues at all so far.

      Probably! I'm not super knowledgable on the 4Runner and they're roof rack capabilities. I'm sure there are online forums or Facebook groups though where people have asked that question where you could find some options for racks that would support the weight and give you mounting options. It just mounts via u-bolts that drop down around the roof rack's supports and then synch up on it to hold the tent in place. Easy to mount.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 11 měsíci +7

      Thanks Ken and great question. So, after 2 weeks in it in WY and probably another 7 or 8 camping trips in it, it's holding up great. If I'm thinking of critiques, here are my honest thoughts:
      * The stock mattress is surprisingly good (most of these cheap tents really suck to sleep in) but this one is not bad. It's not amazing, but it's usable and better than expected.
      * Being a really slim clamshell, it won't hold much gear, but I do have a sleeping bag, wool blanket, all the awning poles, the shoe bags, and the ladder up in it.
      * The shoe bags will only attach via the keder rail in the back, so if you use the side ladder, you have to unzip the back of the tent to access the shoe bags (unless you use a different shoe bag, which is what I ended up doing).
      Other than that, for the money, I feel like it's a great value.

      Use a VPN set to USA, that might work. Not sure about shipping, but I'd think it would be easier and cheaper since it doesn't have to cross an ocean to you.

    Hi there, I just wanted to ask the mattress dimensions? Width and length? I'm almost 6'2" and will be sleeping with the girlfriend all the time so wanting to make sure there is plenty of space.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm also 6'2" and it's not bad. My feet do sort of hit the hinge area where the tent opens, but if I sleep a tiny bit diagonal, I don't. Or, you just get used to it. It's about 82" long and about 50" wide in the interior if that helps.

    It's a good looking tent, but with those wedge style tents and my height, I'm always afraid of my feet feeling cramped down by the end.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yep, I feel that. I'm 6'2" tall and I definitely do hit my feet on the bottom, but I sleep slightly angled and that solves most of it. If you went with your significant other all the time, clamshells may be tight.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Nope, no issues. I literally bought this tent because of the design of the awning, since it covers the sides and the rear. The other clamshell options mostly just have awning coverage in the rear, but this style allows me to use the sides and also keep my side windows vented, even in a downpour. @@Carl-vx9ws

    These clam shell tents have a nasty habit of making rattling noises. I use to have one and it would always rattle (nothing to do with the mounting, it was snug as a bug in a rug). My buddy just got this exact tent and it also rattles like crazy. Apart from the rattle, they are great. If noise is a concern to you, DO NOT get one of these tents.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před 10 měsíci

      Huh, weird. I don't have any rattles (even after about 5K miles over 2 weeks all offroad in Wyoming). I do have a slight whistle from my solar panel that I mounted on the rails, but it's pretty slight and doesn't bother me.

      This video has over 116K views and the vast majority of the comments are "thanks, this was helpful as I'm looking at this tent and comparing it to more expensive options." I'm not trying to win an Oscar for film making, just sharing information based on my experiences in hopes that it can help others.
