it´s unbelievable how much more value that old footage becomes in that stadium of ai!!!!!! Emotions and technics are so much more "touchable" with the ai enhancements and colors even it is not perfect but imagine what it will become if you look towards the speed of ai-development. WOW!!!!!!! ...the topographic of the areas are realizable for me for the first time i guess!!! THANKS for your work!!!!! It is unbelievable worthy!!!!!!!!

Adding hints of colour & slowing the frame rate down to normal speed changes so much how you view this film! It truly brings it home, these were just young men doing their duty. With hindsight we now know what a terrible waste it was, particularly the idea behind the PALS battalions.. Nicely done though, I enjoyed watching all of this.

Your best chance of finding out is if you know which unit he was in.. My grandfather was in the Kings Own South Wales Borderers Pioneers.. he was captured at Ploegsteert Woods on the night of 17/18 April 1918. (I still have the photo postcard his commanding officer sent back with the information that he was listed missing) There are surviving reports of the night action to recapture the woods which back up the story he told, though he thought he was on the Somme in reality it was just south of Messines.

In 28:25 if you look at the bottom of the hill you will see two soldiers running and falling to the ground. According to some historians these soldiers are thought to have been shot, so this is the first footage of soldiers falling in battle ever captured on film. Of course the scene is cut because so many people possibly died and so you then see another footage of more soldiers rushing to the crater.

Such amazing footage and heart breaking at the same time just knowing they had no choice but to be there. My Great Great Grandfather joined his majesty's service in 1893 he was 14 years and 11 months old when he joined he became part of the 84th Field Battery. Documents show he then went on to be called up again in November 1915, when he went on to fight with the 84th battery, Royal Field Artillery in The Somme and I believe he was lost in this battle he was 36 years old but unfortunately I just can't get any further with my history search as it all becomes very difficult to work out as it appears his death was only registered in 1932 which was 16 years after the battle but as I know this isn't true because of the stories my Grandfather told me of his Grandfather so I am now stuck with seemingly nowhere to go from here and the online forums don't seem to be very helpful in my case but anyway I digress I seem to lose myself when talking about this particular subject so will say again fantastic viewing and incredibly sad it had me feeling some very strong but very sad emotions. A great video which all should see because we really don't know how lucky we are.

Notice how many are happy go lucky laughing and smiling at the camera at the beginning as if they were embarking on a great adventure. That generation truly didn't have a clue what the meaning of war actually was. So many of those poor kids were just not prepared for what they were getting themselves into. Hence why an astronomical amount of people was killed throughout that whole war. WW2 was brutal but WW1 was just tragic in terms of the inexperience of so many of those soldiers.

A English soldier went over too the German trenches before the battle. He told them how many artillery pieces the Allies would use and what kind of shells. He also told them how many Regiments were taken part. Also some officers made calls home that the Germans heard. Sad, as that was the MOST useless and TOTALLY unnecessary war EVER fought in history and set the stage for the Second World War!
So many of those men going to the front in 1916 likely either died or were horribly wounded either during the Battle of the Somme or in the two years of contued war afterwards!
I am listening to the free audiobook: "How I filmed the war" czcams.com/video/6IP2fAnxcAY/video.html by the man who filmed much of the footage shown here. Very great book and brave man who risked his own life to get footage for future generations to study. He gives even more details of many of these images.
PS - the German prisoners were the lucky ones because they were out of the war that would go on for two more years!

Another comment i want to make, is that i got the idea, that we huge masses of men, not knowing really what was going on, and what they were supposed to be doing. Thats what you had, when the powers that be were 50 miles behind the lines, not knowing what actually was going on. All those smiling faces for the camera, made me think that this was a Kitchener progaganda film

Kitchener was already dead nearly a month before this battle started... He perished on 5 June 1916 on his way to Russia.

A middle class, reasonably educated man volunteers to become part of the British Army in order to fight the Germans, then risks his life on the battle field week after week in the most atrocious circumstances and he "wouldn't know really what was going on" ???
Amazing comment... Life was much simpler then and governments didn't have hidden agendas like nowadays.

@@ricksfilmrestoration5163 I’m not complaining, (just a word of note)…great vid though… I’m fortunate to be able to remember visiting me Great Grandad when I was younger. He was a British working class man’s soldier. I never did see my Great Nan.. (she stayed, and slept in the front room (down stairs front room,((living room in todays language)), with the curtain’s shut 24-7, from what I’ve been told she never did manage to get over the death of her brother. ??

Well I am somewhat offended, in particular because you didn't read the description. There is a summary version with spoken commentary and music on my main channel. I don't have the best commentary voice, hence the use of a very realistic digital voice.
CZcams's rules don't permit me to put this full version on a monetized channel, but I didn't want to waste the immense amount of work that was done on this video. So I don't like such comments and ask myself: why can't viewers just be contented with what is being presented? Do viewers like you contact David Attenborough to tell him they don't like his voice nor the music behind e.g. "Planet Earth"?!

I Watched without sound. Far more realistic. But then I don't want colourisation either. I come from the days of black and white film and that's fine for old fogies like me with a bit of imagination and background knowledge.
