Scotty, I care about you too. Thanks for all the advice over all these years. My car is still alive. You're THE man!
Your talking trash about toyota ...
Scoty got paid by honda or ford
How long rav 2015 to 2020 toyota last?
I remember when the first Highlander Hybrid came out... I looked at the specs online... I looked at the MPG rating, then I looked at the price.... Then I looked at the regular Highlander MPG... Then I looked at its price.... Then it came to me. The same person that thought this was a good idea must be the same person that thought sitting on a cactus was a good idea.
Same exact thought I had when that GM pickup and SUV, what the hell is it, the Yukon or the Denali or Sierra, one of those tanks was made into a hybrid form, don't know if they still make them. Using some quick math in my head, I figured that that extra 1 or 2 MPG you save can buy you 5 free medium lattes from Starbucks every year.
@@justacinnamonbun8658 dont buy hybrid buy normal ones that last longer
There is nothing like the stress you feel when Scotty makes a video and your car is in the thumbnail
I have a 2013 model in this exact colour :DD
It's a perfectly fine automobile
Lol!!!!!
Yup but mine is a gasoline
@@OROMl I have just bought a 2008 Highlander Hybrid Limited. 129k miles and now I’m the second owner. Already fell in love with the car. Pay an extra 70 bucks a month for 50k mile warranty. Anything goes wrong in that time I pay a 250 deductible and Toyota dealership will fix it. I think I got myself a good one. I heard a bunch of good reviews and basically looked till I found one that caught my attention. Went to test it out and other than one or two scruff marks on the rear bumper it’s basically perfect. Timing belt and water pump were done at 92k miles so I shouldn’t have to worry about that for awhile. I’m wondering what other things to look for to keep the car running as long as I can.

I mean scotty said you can buy it, but just expect to pay a bit more on repairs.
My 07 Highlander Hybrid 4wd has been in 3 accidents plus somehow survived Houston flood water and still going strong! Never a check enginge light 250k miles..
And I got it because in his past videos he said get a highlander there amazing cars but in that video he should have us a heads up about the hybrid 🤦🏻♂️
@@1KJ.O-101 just dont buy hybrids. if you want hybrids like SUV design buy a RAV 4 hybrid.
I’m of the mindset to buy whatever car you want and just don’t keep cars to above 60K miles where all the repairs start to begin…or past the warranty period. Let someone else take it from there on the used market.

He’s awindmill
The diff for a BMW is about 800 installed. I'll be happy to pay that over 2500 in the Toyota.
you got a highlander, what year, is it any good? looking to by one
For a Toyota, 150k IS “only 150k” lol given that their lifespan is usually in the neighborhood of 500k.
🤣🤣🤣
I almost bought one instead i opted for a regular 2009 V-6 Highlander and i did not regretted my choice...
Thank you ,thank you ,thank you ! I was ready to sign on the dotted line on a 2020 Highlander Ltd Hybrid , what was I thinking !!! Spot on Scotty! These synergy drive systems are very well made and last many years BUT when they need to be worked on the expense is prohibitive. Same for the battery pack.
I've had 2 Highlander Hybrids (2008 & 2012) and I now own a 2017 Highlander XLE non Hybrid. All have been great SUVs, just change oil and tires and they all go forever! Love these cars, perfect family cars!

As always with what I have found with your videos, very informative! You are consistent with your objective analyses! BTW, your advice was a big factor in my recent auto purchase: a 2020 Toyota 4Runner. I am loving it so far and hopefully won't have the issues I have had with its U.S. counterparts! I just had to finally comment on your assistance to us all....and during your bonus questions, that cat in the background took the cake! Keep on keeping on Scotty!
❤ you Scotty, i'm so glad I found your channel. Keep 'em coming!
I did this exact analysis back in 2005 when hybrid SUVs were first starting to come out. The dealers refused to deal on hybrids and even with the tax deduction and not counting the battery replacement costs, the hybrid still wasn't worth it. Bought a regular Toyota Highlander in 2005 and still have it in 2020. By far the best car I've ever owned.
The price of petrol now is really starting to make hybrids look a more appealing option
@@stevros48 so as the cost of fuel for power plants rises, so does the cost of electricity.
Even converting back to coal for some of the oil fired plants will not stop the daily cost of charging batteries from increasing.
By the way, I have installed antipollution equipment on plants we converted back to coal, and the effectiveness of that equipment is amazing.
Anyhow we all will see electricity costs become much more expensive.
Also, the public is becoming more aware of the truth of environmental toxicity of EV manufacturing and disposal and will demand some responsible answers to protect our environment.
@@patrickbennett2737 I think when they can get a good range and work efficiently and charge themselves up going at 100km per hour or whatever the speed limit is and they have a really reliable bulletproof battery then people will want them for sure , the savings are certainly good in inner city driving but on open road its still a mixed bag.
Scotty, You did an especially excellent job with this video. I don't know much about Highlander's other than they're one of the longest lasting cars you can buy. Your point about the hybrid version not attaining much difference in fuel mileage and only adding about 36 HP is a deal breaker for sure. When you're already working with 270 HP an additional 36 HP isn't needed, nor is the slight bump up in MPG's, or the additional weight and complexity. Your are so right that the hybrid version isn't worth the extra cost. That can be a real money saver for people. You're great!!! I was surprised to hear that there are some hybrid batteries that will last twenty years. I had no idea. I'm presuming these would have been made by or installed factory fresh at the Toyota plant. We bought a brand new Prius C in 2013. We wanted to get ten years out of it. This fall we'll be at year seven and because we've never had one problem with this car we have confidence of reaching the ten year point. Due to it's age now beginning this winter we are using our garage heat set at 60-65F. We feel this will ease things for the battery thus extending its life. But if we could get twenty years out of it that would be a wonderful marvel for sure. Scotty, thank you for the difference you make in the world.
Congratulations on reaching 3M subs! I have been watching when you had ~500k subs - thank you for the advice and fix it videos.
As an owner of a 2013 RAV4 and a 2016 Highlander (both gas) I can tell you that Scotty is a man of Truth. Listen to him and avoid costly mistakes.
What about that new rav4 prime tho? 🤔
@@DUNGSTA I have not looked at the new ones. With 12K miles on my 2013 RAV4, I have a long way to go before I am looking for a new one. I am very pleased with the 6 speed automatics in my 2013 RAV4 and my 2016 Highlander (with 3K miles). In my opinion, look around for a low miler with the 6 speed. Just saying....
Nissan especially
1000 miles a year you’ll have that one for a thousand years!
Scotty man, I love your videos! Not only are they entertaining, I've learned so much and saved myself some $ too. Thank you.
so hybrids arent worth buying when damn near every part costs as much as a headgasket job or engine rebuild
If it breaks
pretty much
I have driven my prius for 300 000km with just basic maintenance. Parts are cheap
@@AB-wq2vy until the hybrid battery fails and you have to fork over the dough like $2000 or more for OEM battery. Yeah they sell 3rd party rebuilt batteries for half the price, but they don't last 1 year before they fail.
@@AB-wq2vy Prius is also a cheaper vehicle , and they sold alot more. So assuming basic economy of scale , parts will be cheaper as well... however i bet even at 180k miles the batteries arent holding charge as well meaning the gas engine is running longer than normal and MPG is starting to drop. Thats my experience with 200k mile prius.. But Prius batteryies are not hard to change and i believe you can buy the cells and test the cells yourself now days. making maintenance even cheaper. Prius is also on Fwd not Awd so less moving parts to break.
I have an 06 Highlander hybrid with 400,000km (250kmiles) with original battery and motor. Still running mint. Guess i got lucky.
Anuj Taxali I got 06 Highlander hybrid with 150k miles, I bought used with 136k miles in March 2018. Runs like new, I changed the front brake pads only. I totally love it, bulletproof.

I had a Camry hybrid as a company car. Where the electric motor helped mileage the most was in stop and go traffic because it wasn't starting the gas burner while creeping along. The battery was only good for about 10 miles of bumper to bumper though so if you got caught in extended traffic, it went back to the gas burner.

Great honest review, thanks Scotty!!
The 2020 Highlander hybrid trades power for fuel mileage. Total power was dropped from 306 to like 243, but now they get mid 30s as far as mpg. The old hybrids never seemed worth it as you only gained a few mpg. Better now, but I'd personally still stick with that tried and true V6.
Congrats on 3 Mil scotty

I just had the idea to buy one used hybrid highlander, but seems I'm back to start point...

I had my eyes on a lexus ct 200h with 40k miles gladly it sold before i bought it now i have a mazda 3 hatch
If you want a hybrid for the gas mileage, I'd consider the 4-cylinder 2007-2013 Highlander model. Mine gets around 27 MPG. If you don't need to tow things or constantly fill it with adults, its a good option.

Buy a regular highlander and be happy
When I bought my 06 Highlander I considered the Hybrid. Could not justify the added $7K cost for maybe 2-3 mpg improvement overall. I also expected mechanical complexity increase and reliability decrease form the system. My non-hybrid Highlander has 260K miles with no major repairs.
How many miles did it have on it when you purchased it

@@mr.c493 Nice stuff. I gave my 2012 Highlander to my dad and got myself an Avalon hybrid earlier this year for better gas mileage due to increased city driving. Love the new car but the Highlander is still a beauty that I borrow from my father from time to time on short road trips.
Scotty: "Meeeh!"
*A goat photo pops up*. I laughed
As someone who owned a Camry 2007 Hybrid, I loved that car but I had to replace a battery cell in 2018, I did it myself but it takes a long time without an electric drill to remove the 100+ bolts/screws but besides that it was great. I gave it to my cousin and we had to replace 2 other cells a few days ago again without any automatic drills. Not very hard but pain in the butt if you have some electronics experience. I now own a 2016 highlander at 60K kms and hope it'll hold well :)
Really depends on what you want. If you are a fanatic of gas mileage where every MPG matters, then go for the Hydrid. But in the long run, if you want to get years out of your car, just get the normal 3.5 V6. My family has the 3.5 V6 Highlander, drives like new everyday, takes a beating from the kids, yet it still goes. In my opinion, does getting a couple few MPG more really justify the planned obsolescence and complexity problems that you will eventually encounter with the Hybrid?
Regular v6 highlander is one of the best vehicles today,; reliable and built with classic Toyota quality. No hybrid or electric junk! Rev up your hughlander!
emilios man parents still have a 05, no major problems whatsoever
@@fns3159 I got an 07 , love it to death.
I built Highlanders from 2012 to 2017. We started building hybrids in the US in 2015. Like scottie said, dont get the hybrids, far too expensive to repair down the road.
Might be true, but to be honest I don't think Toyota has made a nice vehicle since 2009.
engine v6 sludge issue!!
look it up, it's a well known problem.😲
I would never get a hybrid either, whether if it is a sedan or a crossover. Instead, I would get a 2006 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 large SUV with the 5.4 L Triton V8 engine, which produces 300 horsepower and the regular four-speed automatic transmission. I have checked out the all-new, 2020 Lincoln Corsair crossover with the 2 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 250 horsepower and the eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the uglier MKC. It is fuel-efficient, it has standard AWD and it is powerful enough to accelerate. There is no need to go for the 2.3 L four-cylinder turbo BTW.
In 2010 I was driving a 2001 gen. 1 Prius, and the battery pack went, which was quite surprising. I got lucky. I found a used battery pack on Ebay. The local Toyota dealer installed it, and the total came to $1400. I then found a guy on the Internet who was buying bad battery packs to rebuild, and he paid $200. for mine. Got four more years and another 100,000 miles out of the car (battery pack was fine when I sold it). I do agree though. Don't bother with a hybrid unless you're driving a ridiculous number of miles.
My brother works for a hydro company and says the grid could not support the power load needed if everybody bought a all electric car or suv. Yet many governments around the world are pushing electric vehicles more than ever. Utter insanity.

Thanks, Scotty! I'm about to pull the trigger on an SUV, and thanks to your outstanding videos I've narrowed it down to between a used Toyota Highlander and Lexus EX 350. I definitely will not consider the hybrid Highlander now after your great explanation. You're the man, my man!
Real world MPG is much different than advertised. My 2018 Highlander XLE AWD averages 18ish in city and 23ish on the highway.
My 18 Subaru Crosstrek in the winter I seen 17 mpg in 10 minute drives. On the highway, I've seen 33. Manufacture numbers 27 to 33. Not in cold months the mileage is horrible on short trips (driving to work.)
2019 with the 3.5 V-6: 18/23, identical to your mileage results.
What do you think about the Toyota Venza?
Thank you for the great videos!!!
I have a Honda Accord 2014 with 78,000, I only change the oil and check the air filter every 3,000 miles. My question is, Should I be checking anything else...."like the transmission fluid?" I really want my car to last. :D
So how would you check the transmission fluid? Every 3,000 miles with synthetic oil is overkill. We do ours every 5,000.
Hey scotty gonna do a vid on Toyota shifting all production of Tacoma's to Mexico??!
He'll have to film from his bathroom as he prays to Commodius. Sickening.
Hahaha So what, Lots of cars are made here and are terrible. Check out the Transmission failures these 4 5 year old chevys are having. Funny part is most of them are breaking down right after warranty LOL!
I was so relieved the next 4Runner was not going to be made here. My 2012 SR5 is so simple to work on; I hope to put another 150k on the odo. Toyota quality is at its best at Aichi prefecture.
Don't hold your breath. Original PT Cruiser was a great design, but they built them in Mexico and in many cases they didn't torque down the head bolts properly. Heads warped & started leaking. Scotty proclaims it "worst car ever - the blow head gaskets!" when it really was a Mexican assembly issue. Now Toyota is gonna build in Mexico too? It's SCOTTY whose going to blow a head gasket now.
Si Senor !😄
So glad I watched this!
Scotty, what do you think of the new Rav4 hybrids? Happy with mine so far.
Scotty, have you ever done a video on this new start/stop tech that is appearing on most new vehicles?
I’m going to the doctor tomorrow to get my hearing checked. I could’ve sworn I heard Scotty say “money pit” while talking about a Toyota. 😳
two turntables toyota hybrid not the regular gas versions.
This dude reminds me of Joe Pesci's character, Leo Getz, in Lethal Weapon. Accent, talking with his hands and all.
the hybrid option for our 2019 highlander xle was only 1,350 to bad that stuff is so expensive to repair
The new Rav4 prime supposed to have 900mile range. Im gonna look in to that
