- Every year, 15 to 20 women and girls in Jordan are burned, beaten, or stabbed to death by family members because they are seen as having transgressed social codes of "honor."
But over the past few years there have been signs things are changing. Authorities have stepped in with measures to curb the practice.
So can Jordan put an end to "honor" killings? DW's Aya Ibrahim traveled to the capital Amman to find out.

Good documentary, but sadly, Jordan is not enforcing or improving its laws and honor killing continues. Jordan is no moderate arab state. That is a pathetic myth that needs to be challenged.
Nor should they. I’m fine with Jordan doing what they want to do. No country is perfect and few could be characterised as “good.” Thats an OLD culture... far older than yours or mine. We are not qualified to judge or even understand.
@@JayJordanJuly Not perfect! This is about human rights, oppression, extreme intimidation, violence, confinement and whatever else serious crime you can think of. I'd say, yes not perfect. Jonathan, you are minimising a very serious cultural practice.
@@StHat20 ; I’m more than happy to hear what you have to say. Please elucidate?
It literally is lol, the laws changed alot, it was legal back in the day and now it's not anymore. They're working on it although slow, it's improving
@@sanabil493: I live in England… where we have rabid corruption and societal degeneration. We just went through many debates after a serving police man arrested a young woman in order to rape & murder her. I find it very difficult to pass judgement on a society like Jordan. Lots of people have vivid imaginations when it comes to foreign countries and cultures. What happens here is no measure for what may go on in another country. It’s not the same. There are no transferable “rights” without context.
Honor killings.are.haram! A person is not allowed to take law into their own hands! It's not shariah!
Thank you!
And yet they do
If they killed Jordanian men for half of what they accuse the women of, there wouldn't be hardly any men left. How would they like it if women killed them for their lecherous, lude behaviour? Double standard.
I realize it is pretty randomly asking but do anybody know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Izaiah Ralph Flixportal :)
the short answer is NO. Jordan will not put an end to this because they do not care.
As a Jordanian I do care, many of us do. The problem is there's many tribal families that control the system, the king and queen aren't doing their best job, but it's also not 100% in their hands
@@sanabil493
So you basically said nothing.
As a Jordanian, I completely disown and renounce the ideology of Honor Killing. However, you have to understand that Jordan is a relatively new country, and it was called Trans-Jordan, where many Bedouin tribes resided. Until this day, the beduin tribes still reside in the non developed cities of Jordan. This is where the idea of honor killing comes and unfortunately spreads. It’s a very outdated and barbaric ideology that objectives women. Nevertheless, keep in mind that Jordan is constantly developing and growing, and those outdated ideologies are being washed away as well. Queen Rania is a very active on promoting gender equality. She is also constantly working on the improvement of Jordanian women lifestyle overall. Newer generation of youthful Jordanians are better educated and show no acceptance of this terrible and criminal act. With that in mind, change is coming, slowly but surely.
Yeah, I figured it was mainly happening in some backwards Bedouin villages. Usually does
Evil and extreme religious wickedness and jealousy, madness and illiteracy, control and fear and hatred and disrespect for especially women .Why do Arab men so worried about honor
Very disgraceful, shame on Jordan.
There is no honor in killing defenseless girls, why don't they understand
Come on man… it’s more complicated than that and you know it.
Only Weak Men
Fear Strong Women
King of Jordan is a Failure
Finally someone gets ir
Couldnt MODERN Queen Rania sort this out?
Exactly.... She talks about solving problems, attend Oprah's show, wear extraordinary attire- I thought entire Jordan would be like that...but No.. Moreover they ain't a democracy...they can easily change this custom or abolish and penalize the criminals.... God knows why ain't they doing it!!

How do I follow more of Rana's work ?
Rana has a book documenting her work called Murder in the Name of Honor
If honour killings can happen because a female speaks to a male outside their family I wonder how many cases there have been where she literally said something like I can't speak to you, her family saw and she was killed.( Also how many total for speaking to other males)
this is a culture! it's NOT Islam or any religion. it's happens both Muslim🌻Christian tribes of Jordans, Pakistan, Kurds cultures.
Paul Hughes they’re* you’re illiterate
@@Sunny-lt1zl Lmao don't worry he's the only "uncivilized" creature he's talking about.
@@Sunny-lt1zl oh my god you obliterated him with your useful input
Stop honor killing!
Reflect! Why did Allah SWT instructed us to protect women and children in the Qur’an?
Did you guys against Allah???
Are you out of mind?
SubhanAllah I thought Jordan was better than this.
@Daniel Eskandar It's a disaster of a country actually. Way safer than its neighbors but it doesn't make it a perfect country.
@aisha_the_amazing494
I bet you're not even virgin .
There legal system would take this issue more seriously if we all boycotted the tourist industry to Jordan until these crimes ceased. That would make their government listen. Don't go to these countries until women's rights are taken seriously. Money talks.... And looking the other way and going to these countries and supporting their economies means what....
Jordanians don't want feminism in their country .
I think the reason why the kings half sister fled to London is because she would probably be subjected to Sharia law and an honor killing in Jordan. Maybe the law says honor killings are illegal, but in practice I do not think they are. They are still condoned and women are still punished.
I lived in Jordan. I'm afraid this is nonsense. Honour killings are illegal both in theory and practice. There are countless initiatives being made to combat it. Just because a certain phenomenon has a certain degree of prevalence, doesn't mean it isn't illegal.
@@moluther2826 stop be an liar yes
Lmaoo, wtf is this nonsense? Honor killing is illegal in Jordan both in theory and practice, and "Sharia law" has no authority over things other than inheritance for example.
If we have Sharia law we wouldn't have all those bars and clubs all over the place, even homosexuality is legal in Jordan which is against Sharia law
Painful really
What, oh My god 🙏🙏🙏
Victims of honor? The type of honor defined by extreme islamic doctrine you mean
As much as I hate Islam, it is right nowhere. These kind of things can even be found in est countries, it happend sometime in the news of my country. Blam Islam for more important things because in this case it won't help anything
I haven't seen honour crimes in the Quran. Honour crimes have more to do with the view tjt a man's honour, a households honour is tied to the woman. Her hymen. Her body. Her mind. She has no agency. It's an extreme but common type of social control. Not religion.
@@andila716 Honour killing are forbidden in Islam dipshit

Honour killings happen in alot of East countries, it's not specifically related to islam
I once loved a Jordanian.. Who was this....
When we support symbol hijab, the symbol of honor. Than why oppose this honor killing?
One of the woman in the documentary, Mona, wears a hijab. You're confused lol
So you think honor killing is honorable?
Hijab, if it's chosen freely isn't an issue. It's places that FORCE it that are the problem.
Ummm hijab isn't a symbol of honor it's a religious symbol of modestly. Educate urself plz
People always pointing fingers in India but there are so many other countries that do such shamelessness acts. People just use oner killings as a excuse to get away with stuff. There was a story of a Indian girl how ran away to be with her boyfriend. The family asked her to come back home and promised they would marry her if to him.. they lied and killed her😢

@უფალო შემიწყალე yeah like before generation huh? There's like 40 year in my country before porn, sexual crime was so high children couldn't even play outside, woman was kept at home, people will always find a solution to see porn, sex is primordial in our species, erotism is everywhere
@უფალო შემიწყალე IT can be stopped but while they are stopping it, 10 new sites are already at online. And yes I know what the dark web is. And I think there should be better age controles for porn sites

I’m too traumatised by Aya’s nose to deal with the serious issue on the video! She needs a separate screen for that nose.
