Quirt Evans (John Wayne), a cowboy on the run, seeks refuge when his horse stumbles near a Quaker family's land. The family takes him in as he regains his health, all the while falling for their daughter, Penelope (Gail Russell). As Quirt falls deeper in love and starts becoming accustomed to the family's peaceful ways, his violent past catches up with him. Eventually he is faced with deciding whether or not to let go of his turbulent former life in order to begin his future with Penelope.
This is the first film that John Wayne both starred in and produced. It was made under his production company John Wayne Productions, which was the precursor to Batjac Productions.
