    Aisling: "And we will only be alive for a short time."
    Pangur Bán: lives for over 30 years, which is really old for a cat.

    Fun fact: the main reason why aisling cannot get the key herself is because faeries in irish folklore cannot touch metal, specifically iron, which is presumably what the key was made of.

      I think it more accurately means "fuller's white" but I'm not sure.

    1. Read through the comments and got a headache. People for the love of god, it’s not Irish Gaelic. It’s Irish or Gaeilge. (Like Spanish | Español) So please stop suggesting that calling it simply Irish is wrong, because that’s how our schools and the state refer to it. At this point the language is only referred to as Irish Gaelic so it’s easier for foreigners, but it’s literally never called that here among Irish people. Gaelic is what we generally use to refer to either Scots Gaelic or shortened Gaelic Football.
    2. Her name is Aisling. It has nothing to do with Ashley. They just happen to sound similar. Aisling is an old Irish name that roughly translates to dream or vision. Ashley is an English name that refers to ash trees, or a grove. Not related. At all.
    And finally, on that note - Aisling is not a púca. She is more than likely one of the daoine sídhe or what you could call a fairy. Probably one of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a mythological race.

    For some reason this song makes me cry. Because of how fleeting life is and the beauty it holds in its living. The connection with Celtic myth is much deeper for me. It is also said that cats can walk between the realms of the living and spiritual. Sweet little Pangur Ban shows us how to rescue young Brendan from his prison.
    But life is very short and beautiful. I lost my dad recently and it made me think of him.

      But there is an exclusive peculiarity found only in my city, Salvador. We pronounce the R in the end of the words (ar) like letter H in English (hot), the sound is almost silent, it is not a vibrant sound.

    Pangur Bán was the name given to a monk’s cat. On the side of an illumayer manuscript, he doodled and wrote a little poem dedicated to his White cat...the manuscript is in Reichenau Abbey in Germany. The poet compares his cat’s chasing mice to him ‘chasing words’... he loves his work and so does Panguar Bán. Both of them get pleasure in their ‘craft’. It’s a lovely kind and simple live poem in a way. He has a special place in the hearts who love the Celtic Church and her tradition of seeing God in everything and just beside us. An imminent theology...

    When I saw this movie the first time it was on Netflix oh so long ago now, that cat always stuck with me.
    I would find myself randomly singing "Pager Bon oh Panger Bon"
    I could be in the belly of my ship when i was in the navy, I could be in a laundry room folding clothes, I could be hiking in the woods, or even stuck in traffic.
    But those words and the melody of this song would just come to me.
    So, I finally had enough, turned on CC, and saw how the cats name is spelled. An hour later, my heart is full, and as an avid cat lover, and knowledge seeker, I couldn't be more happy.
    Pangur Ban was written as a poem by an anonymous 9th Century Monk at Reichenau Abbey near the Austrian Alps.
    This translation isn't the prettiest to read in English, but it's the "official" translation. There are alot of others that are just as good.
    Pangur = "A fuller" a fuller being someone who cleanses Wool with the process of Fulling.
    Ban = White
    White Fuller
    The poem illustrates from the Abbots point of view how his love for hunting words is the same and on par with his cats love for hunting prey.
    I feel like this was worth writing out. Enjoy ^_^
    I and white Pangur
    practice each of us his special art:
    his mind is set on hunting,
    my mind on my special craft.
    I love (it is better than all fame) to be quiet
    beside my book, diligently pursuing knowledge.
    White Pangur does not envy me:
    he loves his childish craft.
    When the two of us (this tale never wearies us) are
    alone together in our house,
    we have something to which we may apply our skill,
    an endless sport.
    It is usual, at times, as a result of warlike battling's,
    for a mouse to stick in his net.
    For my part, into my net
    falls some difficult rule of hard meaning.
    He directs his bright eye
    against an enclosing wall.
    Though my clear eye is very weak
    I direct it against keenness of knowledge.
    He is joyful with swift movement
    when a mouse sticks in his sharp paw.
    I too am joyful
    when I understand a dearly loved difficult problem.
    Though we be thus at any time,
    neither of us hinders the other:
    each of us likes his craft,
    severally rejoicing in them.
    He it is who is master for himself
    of the work which he does every day.
    I can perform my own work
    directed at understanding clearly what is difficult.

    • @chrisflanagan7564
      @chrisflanagan7564 Před 3 lety

      You might enjoy some of the other translations of the poem, which are less "correct", but work better in English.
      Pangur Bán:
      I and Pangur Ban my cat,
      'Tis a like task we are at:
      Hunting mice is his delight,
      Hunting words I sit all night.
      Better far than praise of men
      'Tis to sit with book and pen;
      Pangur bears me no ill-will,
      He too plies his simple skill.
      'Tis a merry task to see
      At our tasks how glad are we,
      When at home we sit and find
      Entertainment to our mind.
      Oftentimes a mouse will stray
      In the hero Pangur's way;
      Oftentimes my keen thought set
      Takes a meaning in its net.
      'Gainst the wall he sets his eye
      Full and fierce and sharp and sly;
      'Gainst the wall of knowledge I
      All my little wisdom try.
      When a mouse darts from its den,
      O how glad is Pangur then!
      O what gladness do I prove
      When I solve the doubts I love!
      So in peace our task we ply,
      Pangur Ban, my cat, and I;
      In our arts we find our bliss,
      I have mine and he has his.
      Practice every day has made
      Pangur perfect in his trade;
      I get wisdom day and night
      Turning darkness into light.
