- Southern California soft pop quintet the Sunshine Company comprised singer Mary Nance, singer/guitarist Maury Manseau, guitarist/violinist Douglas Mark, bassist Larry Sims, and drummer Merel Bregante. Signing to Imperial Records in the fall of 1967, the group issued its debut LP Happy Is the Sunshine Company, scoring their lone Top 40 hit with the single "Back on the Street Again." The album also generated the minor hit "Happy," although with their self-titled sophomore effort, the Sunshine Company's commercial momentum dissipated, and in the wake of their third LP, 1968's Sunshine and Shadows, the group disbanded (although rumors of a completed but unreleased fourth effort, supposedly titled Think, continue to circulate). Sims and Bregante later recorded with the duo of Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
This was one of my favorite songs in 9th grade. I was such a little flower child. ( I’ll be 70 soon.)
Larry Sims was a friend of mine in later years in Colorado. He was in a country band then, and I had my own rock/blues band. He would sit in every so often when he was nearby to where we were playing. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy.
The lead singer has a great voice. Similar style to Spanky and the Mamas and Papas. Good to hear it again. Very cheerful song.
The late Mary Nance, yes a lovely vocal.
Great feelgood song
They deserved to be much bigger.
This is an overlooked classic gem of a song !!!! Pure perfection from 1967 !!!
1968
I looked for this song for a long time since 1968.
I love this song, Thanks.
Thanks for posting this wonderful 1968 song John. Nice to have the video with it. All the happenings of 1968. Cheers, Shari
Bassist Larry Sims and Drummer Merle Bregante went on to play with Loggins and Messina through many albums. Great players.
+Ross Rowley Damn, I should have read farther along. Ha!
Thanks for uploading this song. This is the first time I've heard it since in came out in 1968. I never knew who did it. In later years when the song would cross my mind I was sure it was either Spanky and Our Gang or Peppermint Rainbow, but I couldn't understand why it wasn't on either band's greatest hits albums. Now I know. Great hearing it again.
Douglas "Red" Mark went on to form *Redeye* with Dave Hodgkins, Bill Kirkham and Bob Bereman. They put out two albums, the first one featuring their hit single, "Games".
One of them passed away 2 weeks ago.
