  • This foil is only needed for DM42 prior 2020 with buttons that do not register well.
Replacing this foil requires complete disassembly of the calculator, including the fragile flex ribbon cable of the LCD.
Isopropyl alcohol works best for cleaning the PCB surface. If not available, warm water does it too. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the foil.
    The foil is available at:

Just installed mine today. I can attest that the tactile feel is much improved. Keys have a nice "click" now. Thanks, Swiss Micros!

Just performed the swap and the audible feedback has improved considerably as well as the key presses registering more consistently. Well worth the effort to do; thank you @Michael Steinmann.

Installed mine as well, great improvement.
(Side note: While removing the old foil, a loose extra metal pad fell out -- yet all keys still had a metal pad on the old foil).
Anyway, the new foil really helps. Thanks!

Super! Mein DM42 ist von 2018, habe die neue Matte gleich mal bestellt. Toll, dass man die CHF14 Versand geschenkt bekommt! 👍👍

Why use a flexible case as a support? It’s better to use only your (supposed) anti-static pad to avoid further issues. Bending the PCB can break some tracks. After cleaning, why did you place the dirty buttons above the cleaned contacts? For this type of service, I prefer to do it myself.

The good news: replacing the foil is as easy as the video shows, and the keys really feel better afterwards. My keys were mushy before, but now have a satisfying click, much like the DM41X.
The bad news: they're not kidding about the flex cable being fragile. When the time came to re-insert it, I found it was torn half across. I thought I was gentle with it, but evidently not gentle enough. So, unless I can get a replacement display, my DM42 will remain dead.

Thank you for the instructions. Is there any way of knowing the manufacturing date of the calculator? Mine is S/N 05182 (bought it 2nd hand)

I tried to put back the "delicate foil" but it does not turn on after exchanging the foil. Looks like it is trash now!

I'm sorry for that. Do you hear a beep when you insert the battery or attach a USB cable?

@@swissmicros_calculators No, anyway now it is being recycled. If I can make a recommendation for your next calculator. Please consider if the slope of the keys can be reduced to more horizontal, it would be nice. My fat fingers always hit the top edge of the keys, which made it difficult to use long. Thanks
