When I get to work every day, the black spot on my old 42s LCD is a little bigger, inching closer to making it non-usable. It makes me very sad. This video fills me with great happiness and SOOO much excitement!
God Damn. This is beautiful. You said that there would be a batch available for beta testing, is there any chance you know when it is that they'll be on sale or for preorder officially?
The not so good news is, after getting a bunch of nice samples of the Gorilla Glass which said DM42P, I wanted them to change it to DM42 only. So they started production of the first 1000 pieces. I'm not quite sure what happened, one character of the model name got cut off but somehow on the wrong end, see www.swissmicros.com/tmp/mp42.jpg. Now they need to make them over again. And all of you and me, we have to wait. How long? I hope not too long, best case two weeks. The good news is, all the rest looks and feels really good: the housing, the buttons, the electronics with it's super low-power consumption, and last but not least, the software is getting better and better every day.
do you guys plan on bringing back the 48 series? That screen should do it. That screen even looks similar to the HrastProgrammer HP 42s emulator for the 48 series. There are a lot of 48 still around, but it would be kool to have a smaller version, like the size of this DM42. If you are still looking for beta testers, I am in. Probably everyone else too.
The 48 would require an extra row of buttons and there is no HP48 simulator I'm aware of and using the original HP48 ROM for commercial use is not allowed , which makes it rather unlikely ...
Bummer. Well, one can dream. I consider the RPL language the best handheld language there is. Said that, I use my 42s on a daily basis, so the horizontal format would not work for me. I will get this one though. I keep the 48 at the office, and carry the 42 in my bag wherever I go. It is dying it is getting more and more rare in eBay, not to say expensive. Some guys are selling the 42 for over $300. I don't want a calculator to look at and keep it in a display. I use my calculator, so this one is it. You are a god sent or gods sent or whatever entity you believe sent.
what the above video to 0:31/1:05 where the available memory of 74824 Bytes is displayed, which is about 10x than the HP42. But Free42 needs about twice as much RAM per program line, so it might have about 5x more than the original.
the only downside is the screen. the keyboard-look is so nice and original but the screen doesn't go well with the keyboard; it is so modern with the e-ink instead of LCD. why didn't you try plastic bezels? that would give the device more consistent look
Very nice!!! You could increase the font of the number keys (0-9 and .) if you look at the HP 42s you will see they also have the digits and . with larger font than the rest of the keys. But impressive!!!!
I double checked on my HP 42S - and it looks like not only 0-9 and . are larger, but also ÷ x - + Also the ENTER is larger. But looking at your key-design the ENTER looks "balanced" in size with the rest. just the 0-9.÷ x - + look a bit too small. The +/- looks a bit distorted (horizontal compressed) and xy a bit strange. sqrt(x), 1/x and E also look a bit smaller than the other labels. but anyway too much details and ranting from my side ;-) I will definitely get one and I'm super exited!
Looks much more balanced to my eyes! Great! BTW, the xy key on your DM-15L looks still better, perhaps you could take the layout from there? (not sure if the font is the same)
@Michael Steinmann Thanks for sharing this. I read through your slides that you presented and looked at your other products. While very much appreciating the work you do in ressurecting the glory RPN calculators I wonder about your high prices. I would be totally okay with paying close to 200$ for a 42S clone, but from what I saw here and on the slides as well as the 15C clone (telling from reviews), it seems that the hardware quality really is not even close to the former glory. Especially the keys. The HP-15C or 42S were quality products and I wonder, why I shouldn't just go buy an 42S off ebay for around 200-250 than going for your product. Especially since you seem to use still conventional batteries which I find very outdated and not sustainable anymore. I don't want to shit on your product, I am very excited for it. I just want to know what makes the price? The whole ARM board is not expensive, and I doubt that a smaller production badge increases the price that much for a little bit of cheap plastic and a widely spread CPU (generation).
Which reviews are you referring to? Have you tried a DM calculator yourself? People say the keyboard is much better than of the HP-15LE and at least as good as the old ones. The cr2032 battery has many advantages over any rechargeable battery. It must be flat, standardized and easily available now and in 10 or 20 years. And it must not self-discharge for at least a year or more, LiPo etc. do that and don't recover that well from under-voltage conditions. Please let me know which possible power source in this calculator would be better and I'll change to that. Of course plastic is cheap, but it's the correct shape which makes it expensive, and that includes really nice buttons too. Only the best quality materials and parts were used. The back is PVD coated stainless steel like black luxury watches. The Corning Gorilla glass known from handys protects the super crisp 400x240 pixel LCD from Sharp, whereas the HP-42S has a 131x16 pixel LCD with a terrible contrast. The DM42 will be so much more than a HP-42S. It has the greatest precision and largest number range of any handheld calculator on the market worldwide. Maybe the prices of HP-42S calculators on ebay start dropping after the release of the DM42, so if I haven't convinced you yet, you might want to wait for that to happen :-)
Okay you got me more excited! Regarding the buttons, regarding the 15c hardware,I just read that the buttons were flat instead of the slight angled ones from the original. But that does not have to mean anything. Any updates on the beta batch, any ETA? I suppose that the hardware would be final but the software beta (but kept updated)?
It's true the buttons are flat on the current models, because I first thought they all need to be in one plane for printing them, but now it's possible and the buttons of the DM42 are slanted. There will be improvements to the hardware too, mostly for easier assembly. I can't promise the beta units will be equivalent to later units. Of course software updates can be applied. What we haven't tested yet at all is the IR diode, so we don't know if the current limiting resistor is in a sane range for sending at reasonable distances.
Oh okay so that means longer wait for the real thing (I don't need IR but would like the best hardware you can make for the price). Sorry about all these questions but I am so psyched about this product and frequently search the web for updates on the DM42, so my last questions: 1. Are you coming up with a forum of some kind? You really need a platform were we can discuss things and even more importantly were you can keep us people interested up to date. 2. Are you planning to offer accurate results (so 1/3 instead of 0.333) in a later software version? IMO the most lacking thing of these calcs. Btw. I must say I am more psyched about this device and were you will take this, than ybout any upcoming iPhone. Really cool!
we installed a forum but haven't yet told anyone. Please see forum.swissmicros.com, but please be patient we haven't yet moderated a forum and don't know exactly what to do ...
Also, isn't the newRPL project aimed at replacing the entire ROM? Obviously, it's only an Alpha and doesn't have a vast library of tools, but it looks usable
really, see about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/2012/pb22336/html/updt_004.htm DMM Revision: Mailings of Lithium Batteries Effective May 16, 2012, the Postal Service™ will revise Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM®) section 601.10.20 to codify that primary lithium metal or lithium alloy (nonrechargeable) cells and batteries or secondary lithium-ion cells and batteries (rechargeable) are prohibited when mailed internationally or to and from an APO, FPO, or DPO location. However, this prohibition does not apply to lithium batteries authorized under DMM 601.10.20 when mailed within the United States or its territories. Same applies for Swiss Postal service and many more.
Needs to be faster, then. HP Prime runs at 400 MHz. There's a benchmark test: ∫(0,6) exp(x³) dx = 5.9639380919e+91 The answer should appear almost instantly. Less than 1 second.

Wow, definitely cool display with the split screen and a view of the entire stack.
That's beautiful, very much looking forward to this.
Shut up and take my money!
I look forward to getting the chance to play with one of these, great effort :)
I will definitely order two machines as soon as they become available!
Is the display e-ink or lcd? Great viewing angles!
Great to see the progress !! Thank you !
Beautiful machine
YES! I want at least one.
In one word: amazing...
Excellent.
What about DM48? It would be untimate one. 42 is missing nice things like custom keyboard and so on.
God Damn. This is beautiful. You said that there would be a batch available for beta testing, is there any chance you know when it is that they'll be on sale or for preorder officially?

Ohh, I see. Well that's unfortunate. Can't wait though! Thank you for your reply.
Michael: this is great work, when are you making it available for sale? The sooner the better :). Cheers. Jose
Thanks. A new batch will be available in February.

Follow up question. What the memory would be for the DM42? The same as the original 42s or more?

Wow, that is a lot of mem. really nice work. I was watching the HHC presentation. It is quite fast as well.
U are liiiieeeeeiiing, this cant be truuuue, dont play with mah feelings!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg I so need this =(
Does it also include the virtual printer support of Free42?
there is an IR diode for real IR printers, but that's not implemented yet.
The plan is being able to print to a file or to the display.
Save/load data and programs to/from a Windows PC via USB and Free42? BCD support?
that's the plan
I've got to get me one of these!!!
Great!!! eInk?
When you will have an info about it on your official website?
please check our new forum at forum.swissmicros.com//
it's not e-Ink, it's a Memory LCD Display Module from Sharp.
the only downside is the screen.

perfect for calculating how much bitcoin that I own.
Very nice!!!

are these going to be for sale soon?
the beta units will be ready once the glasses arrive. The official release will take a few more months
I signed up for one on your website but when will it be ready?
I'm aroused !!! When is this thing dropping ?? My wallet is ready.
this November
dove la posso comprare? Grazie
Hello,
Please send me an email... michael@swissmicros.com
hp48 clone when?
(Hopefully with a li-ion rechargeable battery)
as soon as someone has written a simulator of it, without the use of a ROM.
li-ion is not an option, sending them by mail almost brings you in jail
Really? I've bought a lot of products online which have Li-Ion batteries, as well as 16340 battery cells I use in one of my rechargeable headlamps.
Also, isn't the newRPL project aimed at replacing the entire ROM? Obviously, it's only an Alpha and doesn't have a vast library of tools, but it looks usable
really, see about.usps.com/postal-bulletin/2012/pb22336/html/updt_004.htm
DMM Revision: Mailings of Lithium Batteries

ok, newRPL could be a candidate, but that's not the same as HP-48 ...
What is the CPU speed in MHz?
The CPU runs with 24MHz on battery, and with 80MHz once connected to USB
Needs to be faster, then. HP Prime runs at 400 MHz. There's a benchmark test:
∫(0,6) exp(x³) dx = 5.9639380919e+91
The answer should appear almost instantly. Less than 1 second.
When will this be available?
it's in the comment:
By the end of March 2017 a batch will be available for beta testers.
The project is ready?
the glasses are still missing, but should arrive next week, then we're ready ...
One for me please.
