Video 16.3: Avoiding circularity in Antecedent Contained Deletion
Antecedent Contained Deletion constructions contain the strange pattern where the antecedent of a elided VP is in fact a VP that contains it. This results in circularity when you try to recover the meaning of the elided VP. Two hypotheses are compared. Hornstein's hypothesis where the DP containing the elided VP, is moved to the specifier of AgrOP for case and Sag's hypothesis where the quantified DP containing the elided VP has undergone covert Quantifier Raising (QR). Both of these approaches remove the embedded DP from within the antecedent and thus resolve endless recursion of structure in trying to recover the content of the missing VP.
