"Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"

When the world crumbles, when the structures of a civilization falter, it is good to return to that which in history does not flex, but on the contrary recovers courage, gathers the separated, pacifies without bruising. It’s worth recalling that the genius of creation is also moving in an history devoted to the destruction ..

“No story lives unless someone wants to know it…!” (…)
The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a great deal of dance music, both for public use and as elements of larger works such as operas, quartets, and symphonies. According to the reminiscences of those who knew him, the composer himself enjoyed dancing very much; he was skillful and danced often.
About 200 dances by Mozart are still preserved. Mozart began writing dances when he was five years old. In 1768, when Mozart was 12, his father Leopold reported that Wolfgang had composed "many minuets for all types of instruments”. Mozart continued to write dance music for various occasions during the Salzburg period of his life (up to 1781).
Following his move to Vienna, the pace of dance music composition increased, as on 7 December 1787 Mozart was appointed Royal and Imperial Chamber Composer for Emperor Joseph II. This post, though largely a sinecure, had as its main duty the composition of dances for the balls held in the Redoutensälen (public ballrooms) of the Imperial Palace. Mozart complied with this requirement scrupulously, composing dances in great number. He generally wrote dances each year between late December and early March; this reflected the scheduling of the imperial balls, which were held "every Sunday during the carnival season, as well as on the last Thursday before Lent and on the last three days of the carnival." There are dances from 1788, 1789, and 1791; none date from 1790 because the Emperor was ill and died February 20 of that year.
Mozart's dances are primarily in three genres.
    -Minuet
The minuet was slightly old-fashioned by Mozart's time. It was of aristocratic origin, elegant and stately. Mozart wrote his minuets in ternary form that is, first the minuet proper, then a contrasting trio section, followed by a return of the minuet. Mozart also wrote a great number of minuets intended for listening rather than dancing: they occur (usually as the third of four movements) in his symphonies, string quartets, and many other works. These minuets are usually longer, faster in tempo and less regular in their phrasing than the minuets meant for dancing.
    -German dance
The German dance originated with the lower social classes. It was much livelier than the minuet and to some degree resembled the waltz. The close physical contact between the dancers, together with constant spinning causing dizziness, led this dance to be attacked as immoral. It was nonetheless danced widely. Mozart's German dances are, like the minuets, in ternary form, but normally with a coda added.
    -Contredanse
The contredanse was a form descended from English country dance. Like its ancestor, it was rich in figures (individual movements and patterns) and was popular among all social classes. Mozart composed contredanses as a sequence of multiple sections. Of the three genres, minuets predominate in Mozart's early career, the latter two types later on.
The core instrumentation of the dances is a simplified orchestra in which there are no violas, and the bass instruments (cello and double bass) play the same line. A variety of wind instruments is usually included, and often trumpets and timpani.
To these basic instruments a few dances add additional instruments not ordinarily found in the orchestra of Mozart's time: fife and drum, tambourine, tuned sleighbells, the hurdy-gurdy, the post horn and the flageolet, which was the piccolo of Mozart's day.

Mozart’s dance Musick had a rare charm & elegance of a man who understood dance well (‘I’ve often thought that dancing was my true calling’ he wrote in 1783) and which sets him far above his less talented contemporary composers who churn’d out (read: ‘scribbl’d) unorganis’d vacuous junk (devoid of contrapuntal ingenuities, at least for the most part) which had to be ‘supplied’ for salon dancing parties - triple-time fluff that was play’d once and then thrown away - but no one to-day would dare do that with any of Mozart’s music -
Or as he wrote in April 1778 to his father: ‘Of course I could scribble like others do ev’ry day but compositions find themselves going out into the world [like grown up adolescent] and I would hate ever to be asham’d of my name on the title-page of any composition which does not live-up to the highest standards of sound-composition…’
What a Virgo-Rising-Perfectionist this ‘little-man’ was ! When ask’d about his high level of spot-on assuredness in his compositions he simply shrugg’d saying ‘I can not possibly do otherwise…even if I tried !’

Well, yes, it would have been nice but you would have had to have been a part of the Salzburg or Viennese aristocracy. And even then, your chances of surviving childhood were about 50-50. If cholera, dysentery, tb, ignorance, sexism, superstition, body odor, bad breath or rotten food didn't kill you, the Catholic Church would!

This collection of Mozart’s dance music (1764-1791) offers a keen insight into his melodic world & could be us’d (in connection with his Ballet Music for Ascanio in Alba (K. 111) from October of 1771, the Mozartean remnants within Les petits reins of 1778 (K. 299a/b/c) , Idomoneo (K. 367) of Jan 1781, his Pantomime K. 446 of Feb 1783, his incidental music to Thamos (1774 & 1779) as well as his other dance music written for the Court of Vienna (1787-1791) not included here on this recording e.g. Marches, Bagatelle, Waltzes & Gigues etc. (to which we could add the Minuetti from the Divertimenti Serenatas & the Sinfonias-as well as dance music such as that us’d in Act III of Figaro (K. 491, March-April 1786) & Don Giovanni (May 1787) etc. to create a completely new Ballet (or three !) using nothing but the Music of Mozart !
This current YT video is more than a little handy for that sort of endeavour - for which we extend our biggest THANK YOU from all Mozarteans out there in the wild !!

Yes I agree with your perceptive comments. Ballet companies should avail themselves of these joyful melodies. In fact I had read (his wife Constance comments) that Mozart himself was very fond of dancing, unlike most composers. That delight in dancing really shows!

Two small corrections, the correct title should read les petits riens, and K 491 is a piano concerto in c minor.
