  • The official Kubernetes Documentary Part 2.
Inspired by the open source success of Docker in 2013 and seeing the need for innovation in the area of large-scale cloud computing, a handful of forward-thinking Google engineers set to work on the container orchestrator that would come to be known as Kubernetes- this new tool would forever change the way the internet is built.
These engineers overcome technical challenges, resistance to open source from within, naysayers, and intense competition from other big players in the industry.
Most engineers know about “The Container Orchestrator Wars’’ but most people would not be able to explain exactly what happened, and why it was Kubernetes that ultimately came out on top.
There is no topic more relevant to the current open source landscape. This film captures the story directly from the people who lived it, featuring interviews with prominent engineers from Google, Red Hat, Twitter and others.
Kubernetes exists as a testament to the power of open source software.

    I like these two points:
    1. Everybody wants to own the user experience. Everybody wants to be the top of the value chain.

I love this sentence: "The truth is, there was no zero-sum game. The best ideas from that race, are still with us. They're consolidated now, and they're consolidated so far into the latest checkpoint which is kubernetes. But the truth is there's going to be something that will replace kubernetes."

I love that even though division was created for the "Container Wars" Kubernetes was still accepted and used as a way for servicing any business and creating the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Unity is the best way to push us further as a people!

Same. Because in a way it almost feels like Docker was hurt by being open-source. Like they said, Swarm commits went to zero when Kubernetes launched. So Docker develops a revolutionary technology that becomes a standard, and Google takes it and adds all of the things corporations need from it, and Docker's future model is sort of cut off? I could be wrong, but Docker is now running their company as a subscription service and I wonder how many people need what Docker is selling when the most important part is open-source, and all of the major advances are happening outside of the company.

But Google always had that orchestrated implementation and tools, containers have always been there
      Kubernetes works with containers
      Not Docker
Kubernetes is just better than docker
But easier and more efficient if you use both of them

Congrats to ALL contributors on this project! This was something I've only dreamed about back in 2002 when I was playing with early container tech like OpenVZ and LXC. Anyone remember Sun Grid?
I'm so glad everyone played well together and pulled this off. The documentary was so spot on in that this type of innovation will groom the next generation of engineers and enabled them to do so much more with computing advancements that's not proprietary to only big boys with deep pockets.

Developing a successful software starts with having a solid infrastructure. I always claim that with the right team, it is possible to do things right from the beginning but if you do not have that luxury, the code needs to be refactored from the ground up very soon before getting big.
Due to that, K8s team thought they weren't ready for Pokémon Go despite the fact that they were.
Besides the great contributions of the open source community, K8s would not exist without the amazing team behind it.
