What Kierkegaard doesn't want you to know?

  • Kierkegaard wants you to be authentic, but he's hiding a secret from you?
In this animated Philosophy video Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish existentialist Philosopher, helps you understand the truth, by noting the difference between objective and subjective truth (or objectivity and subjectivity). This animation is an introduction to Kierkegaard's life and philosophy, and explains how Socrates influenced his life as a philosopher committed to existentialism. Look, and be prepared to see things in a new way! Enjoy!
The video was written by Dr. Russ Hamer, Ph.D. - a top-notch philosopher and an expert on Søren Kierkegaard. Dr. Hamer also gave voice to Kierkegaard. He did so well, I now can't read Kierkegaard now without hearing Russ' voice.
The character of the inquisitive learner in the café was voiced by Rebecca Schisler-Adams, one of my favorite philosophy students, a super-sharp lawyer, and a big fan of "Inception." Thanks again, Rebecca!
And, yes, eagle-eyed viewers . . . Kierkegaard died in 1855 (and not 1815). Sorry about that blunder. That's more than a little embarrassing! But as a great philosopher once said, 'Pobody's Nerfect.'
I encourage everyone to read Kierkegaard (and his pseudonyms!) for yourselves. He is a writer who gets you thinking. The story Kierkegaard tells in the cold open can be found in Part 1 of "Either/Or" (page 30 in the Hong translation, Princeton edition). His discussion of the man in the asylum who speaks the truth but doesn't understand the truth can be found in Volume 1 of "Concluding Unscientific Postscript to Philosophical Fragments" (page 195 in the same translation and edition).
    Peace,
    Dr. Miller

Thanks, Chris! The cafe scene was a lot of work to pull together, but it felt like it matched the themes of the video well.

One person's authenticity is another's mere shadow on the cave wall.

Liked the video . Just a quick note about a typo . At beginning you show him to live to the ripe old age of 2 years old. lol It should be 1813-1855
