  • By viewer request oh so long ago, this is a video on my Confederate impression for Civil War Reenacting. It's a fairly basic impression as of now. But I hope to be adding to it here and there in the future.

    Buying used makes it look more authentic for later war Confederate kit.

    I've always loved the ragged rebel look of Confederate soldiers. They're uniforms were more utilitarian and practical compared to the dark navy blue with brass buckles and heavy leather straps of Union soldiers uniforms. If I was going to be marching and fighting in 100 degree weather I definitely wouldn't want to be a Northern soilder.

      Speaking as an authentic reenactor rather than the mainstream stuff in this video, I would much rather be in US kit. Properly made CS uniforms are thick and almost all jackets are lined. Not to mention that the "Ragged Rebel" is mostly a damn myth as units would be uniform in appearance due to getting issued all the same stuff at once. There may be multiple colors and types of uniform items in a brigade, but regiments would be uniform. If you want ragged soldiers, you would do well to take a look at Sherman's Army as they marched to the sea. That was brutal on their equipment and uniforms.

      @yourmother1631 Před rokem

      honestly since their uniforms were denim its the cheapest to reenact as

    • @archiveacc3248
      @archiveacc3248 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Total oversimplification... Uniform quality wasn't some monolith block, "all rebels looked like x and all union y, for the whole duration of the war". Many different rebel units for many different points of the war were not wearing ragged, piecemeal stitched together uniforms. They had a pretty good depot system running relatively early in the war providing uniforms. Just read any actual accounts by the men, they often had good quality stuff that was a real burden in the heat, just like the union. And just as the confederates often had good uniforms, the union soldiers could get to your "ragged rebel" state pretty quick during a hard campaign. As for your comment on practicality, soldiers on both sides were constantly trying to make their uniforms more utilitarian- switching to blanket rolls, ditching the gaiters, buying civilian hats, writing for underclothes from home, etc etc. And btw, even if what you said was true (its not and a big generalization), imagine being a "ragged rebel" on campaign as soon as it drops below freezing. You'd probably want some nice thick wool!
      Then you make fun of the "brass buckles and heavy leather straps of union uniforms"... you do realize that the catridge box, the belt, the buckle, the haversack, the canteen sling, even the maligned knapsacks were pretty much standard issue for BOTH sides? Literally the basics that any soldier of any nation needed to fight in that era. Btw half of that (knapsack, haversack, canteen sling, etc) may be painted canvas that just looks like leather.
      The navy blue I'll give you, maybe that is a little hotter to be in the sun in, but not really a big difference. In my experience at least, the material controls comfort a lot more than the color. A wool butternut jacket in 90% humidity and sun feels just as awful to me as a blue one.
      Anyways this comment just perpetuates several false myths about the war. It paints everything in broad generalizations and erases the complications and variance of reality. And at the end of the day, everyone on both sides shared common privations and suffered the same ways. Union or Confederate.

  • @junglewarfareproductions3081

    Fun fact some confederates would steal union belt buckles and flip them over and they called it meant Southern Nation.

    Very nice. I was wondering with as hot and humid as it is in PA in July (I know how it feels in the Midwest. I can't imagine wearing wool!) do any soldiers have a handkerchief or bandana to wipe their brow with? I never see any. I heard a history story that a wounded Confederate general asked a retreating Union soldier to wipe his brow as the perspiration was dripping down his forehead burning his eyes. It made me think that would be one of the most practical items to have(?)

      @ Major League Puddle Jumpers To get into reenacting simply google it. Then narrow the search to units in your area. Also decide on Union or Confederate, some units I've known actually switch back and forth depending on who needs more troops.Narrow it further by infantry or artillery. Also when beginning to contact them figure out whether they are family friendly or more on the "rowdy" side. Some of the units really don't want children around as they go for the history but also let their hair down at night.

    Only CSA made pistols are full brass... and Griswarld are pretty bad guns. Not sure why a CSA infantry private would have a pistol...Only sgts would carry one "officially" but not unheard of. Just on a real long March, having a 2.5 pound gun and the extras needed to fire it makes them rare for real Union or CSA infantry to have them. You would have some money, (CSA/Local and maybe a bit of federal currency). Also, you would have tobacco ration... can trade that for Coffee with the Yankees.

      Galaxy Hero They were. Revolvers were only ever issued to officers in the infantry. But it didn't take long for enlisted soldiers to start acquiring a side arms of their own. Most likely we're rarely used in battle because of officers not allowing the men to carry them. For the most part if an enlisted man had a side arm it usually ended up being just a keep sake or a war trophy.

      Travis Dozier that's actually just it. That space you refer to in the bottom section of the tins is a space for additional cartridges. If the tins are designed right and the cartridges are the correct size you should be able to fit around 40 rounds in your cartridge box.
