This climbing film tells the story of my first roped outdoor climbing trip. This was rock climbing as I’d never experienced it before.
Sport climbing and lead climbing have always been beyond my comfort zone.
I’ve spent the last six years bouldering as much as I can. I train at the local bouldering wall, I book holidays to bouldering destinations, and I make bouldering videos at the weekend.
It might surprise you then, that I’d never owned a climbing harness until earlier this year.
When our friends invited Hannah and I for a week of Spanish sunshine in the mountains of El Chorro, we decided to change our ways and dive head first into the world of sport climbing.
We spent seven days in El Chorro in early March. We wrestled with the new gear we’d been loaned, learned how to clean a route, and pushed ourselves to overcome our fears.
It was a steep learning curve, but it was really rewarding to make progress.
My highlight of the trip was definitely the Poema De Roca cave. It’s a magnificent feature carved into the Las Frontales crag, and the central line is one of El Chorro’s classic 7a sport climbing routes. The route is also called Poema De Roca.

Every once in awhile when I’m feeling stagnant with my channel, I come back and watch this video. Mostly to see if your pants were as cool as they are now (they are) but also just to stay hyped and remember what a great climbing video makes you feel like. Because this one, and all of them made me feel excited. Made me feel like I wanted to get out there. Made me feel like I could try new things even if they were hard or scary. So thank you, Nathan, for being you, exactly as you are.
