    There is a lot of confusion here among my italian friends about the meaning of this song. For the non-nationals: the meaning of this song is not JUST about telling some Napoleatan bloke not to speak like an American. "Fare l'americano" means to spend a lot of money, to have a luxurious life-style, to pay for everyone etc... This song is kind of a reminder about not pretending to act like an american because if you are italian you definitely can't afford it. This song has been composed after the WWII and the "American dream" represented a great narrative among Italians.

    • @masterchief-vd1xs
      @masterchief-vd1xs Před 2 lety +64

      I think this has nothing to do with being able to afford something. It is more about the pretending to be something fancy. I mean at one point he is saying "who die this to you" . So he is not speaking about positive stereotypes for Americans.

    Let's make this clear: the song is Italian, but comes specifically from Naples (Napoli). The reason why you see comments from Italians saying "the song is not Italian, is Napoletana", it's because Neapolitans are very proud ppl, with a unique history and dialect, but they are still Italians. Moreover, the song doesn't take the piss of Americans at all! If anything, it's the opposite: back in those days Italy looked at the US as a great country and the youth at that time thought that was cool to act like Americans. "Ma sei nato in Italy!"-"But you were born in Italy!"...Saying things like: you play baseball but you are not good at that - you drink whiskey but then you feel weak...because you are not American. So it's actually taking the piss of those Italians pretending to be Americans (in a funny way). Also, as a musician and Audio Engeneer, I can tell you this song is a piece of gold. If you wanna talk about politics, being xenophobic, or say anything else not related to music, well you are in the wrong place. Music is not even just a human thing, it's a feeling and feelings have no walls, country or barriers! just enjoy it, it's for free! ;)

    The song is evidently about a Neapolitan man who acts like an American. The song is basically just the singer making fun of a dude for acting like an American when he's from Naples.
    The part from “We No Speak Americano” literally translates as
    “How can people that love you
    understand you if you speak half-American?
    when you are making love under the moon
    how come you say "I love you"?”
    Rather than “Ti amo”, this person quite literally speaks half english and says “I love you” in english to their lover, who is probably just as Italian as he is and probably doesn’t speak too much english.

      My Italian is not very good and even so this is a Neapolitan dialect which I have no clue about. But the gist of it is that the person he is singing about wants to become American: "Tu vuol far l'americano" ~ "You want to play the American"

    • @aleksandrgar
      @aleksandrgar Před 7 lety +41

      cortex383 you're almost right, it's more of "You want to do as an American" or act American
      They're mocking someone who according to his mind, he was born in Italy, plays baseball, dance Rock & Roll, drinks whisky and soda but the money of his camel cigarettes comes from the purse of his mommy
