With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
    A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
    1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
    2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
    3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
    4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
    1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
    2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
    3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
    4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” Car Dealers did it to themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. You are exactly right! I know, I, at one time, I sold cars. One day some customers came to the dealership (almost). I say 'almost', because they stood just outside the property line on the sidewalk and would not cross it onto the lot. I spent a few minutes trying to get them onto the lot, but they finally walked off. A good salesperson does not take this personally, just moves on to the next customer.

Love this channel, just found it. Some years ago I went into a local Jeep dealership & immediately was met with a salesman. I saw the model I wanted but they only had it in black. They didn't have the color I wanted on the lot and the salesman was telling me how good the black one looked, etc. I agreed but said I didn't want a black car. He then told me to come into the showroom and brought in the sales manager. This guy gives me the same line about how great the black Jeep was. I said that I didn't want a black car. Then the SM tells me, "What do you mean, this is a perfectly good car, why don't you take it?" At that I told both men "I will never come back to this dealership to buy a car" loudly enough so that all in the showroom heard me. I walked out. Drove about 20 miles away and bought the Jeep in the color I wanted, but I know I probably didn't get the best deal now that I've seen a couple of your videos. Won't happen again.

I remember a dealer would kept stringing us along. Too long. When we got up to leave, they wouldn't return our car keys (the trade-in) and kept stalling. In front of the manager I called the police department and reported that I was being held against my will. The cop wanted to talk to the manager. After a few words, my car keys magically appeared. Imagine that. Never did set foot in that dealership again.

Had a similar hostage situation. This was about 1991, and my wife and I were looking for a vehicle to suit our growing family (one kid and one on the way). She would drive the two-door compact with the kid (she had day care at her work) and I drove a 65 Valiant that my Mum had given me. We had been doing some research and, at the time it seemed like a Ford Taurus station wagon might do the trick. So I pull into a Ford stealership after work and ask for a quick run down on the car and for a quick test drive. Mind you, the car I drove up in was a glorious beater, but I'm dressed in a suit and tie from work, and tell the salesman exactly what I want in a car. I got sat down, and being young and dumb, when he asked me for my drivers licence I handed it over. Cue half an hour of me sitting there while he took it to god knows where to do god knows what with. He came out, we did the test drive. Car was good, and it may well have met our needs at the time. But I did not appreciate being held captive by some dink. Little did he know that my wife had all the money. I told him the car may be a fit for us, but I wouldn't buy one from that dealership because he wasted my time. I hopped into my old Valiant and left. We did wind up buying a car that fit our needs, but it wasn't a Ford Taurus (even though back then they were fairly decent). One arsehole salesman soured me not only on the dealership, but the entire brand.

I have to log back in to work at 1 pm. That means I need to leave NOW. I want my keys." That's not going to happen again. They aren't getting my keys ever again. Saddest part is, we trusted that dealer b/c we've purchased from him before.

I recently walked out of a dealership after doing all the wrong things you just described on a used car. I was only saved because, the finance manager made the mistake of complaining in ear shot of me about losing money on financing over my cash offer. I was regreting the initial thing right when I signed it. The funny thing was the finance guy wanted another five hundred from me. This allowed me to say thx for your time, and leave. The salesman gave chase, but once I was out of the building. My confidence returned and I just left. Not 2 minutes later, The salesman calls saying they're willing to meet my price, but now i'm out and i remember that i wanted a certain color and option package. I also did a half assed check of the car they were trying to hook me with. When I drove home i just kept recounting all the errors i made going to that dealership. I think i have better handle for my next foray. My number one thought now is never feel guilty about just getting up and leaving. Be respectful, but its better to feel relief that you escaped a mistake than shame that you got screwed.

I've had salesmen turn semi hostile after calling out lies. What's wrong with paying a fair price for a decent vehicle ? I had one used car dealer once tell me that he don't lie but he does take your money. He said that he bought cars as cheap as possible from trade ins and auctions and then repairs them. He said that he only will give you 1/3 or 1/2 of what your car is worth after financing and sell it for as much as possible. I always think of him saying that when I look at a vehicle.

    • @collinw1353

I made the $500 mistake on my last car purchase at a dealership. When I went to sign the papers the sales manager said there needs to be another $500 added to the deal and it was the GM that requested it. He wasn't around so I couldn't ask him why so I stupidly said ok and got the car. I realized years later that was just a last minute cash grab by the sales manager to increase his deal. Good thing though is that I didn't buy any of the extras he tried to sell me. I think he was pissed about that. But I still think about that $500 and what I could have used it for instead of lining their pockets.
I learned from a friend who worked in car sales briefly about all their tricks and now I will NEVER buy from a dealership again. Find a deal online from a another "human being" instead of a sales machine that only exists to squeeze money out of you.

Did you go in letting them know you were buying a used car with cash or just kind of worked you way up to telling them after looking around? Also, I've found the car a most likely want online (pending an actual test drive and assessing the car in person) I have the asking price they have listed on their site. So should I just request the breakdown of the total cost when I first get there to see if it matches what I'm willing to pay? Their asking price is 7500 but the mileage is almost at 100K and anything over 100K majority of the time is outside the factory warranty.

Yes, there are still crooks and clowns out there but they are easy to spot and dont stay in one place for very long because the dealerships dont want anything to do with them. I can tell you that margins on vehicles are now razor thin and that a really well run store has between a 3-5% return. Not too many other businesses can live on those kinds of margins.

But last year I walked into a few car dealers for info, and felt no pressure, because I was in charge of the conversations that I was in.
I've even been known to say, "Please don't give me the sales pitch. The more you do that, the sooner I walk."
If you have trouble with saying "no", and boundaries, it's worth doing whatever it takes to see that change in your life. I speak from experience.

You nailed it. It's a rather ignorant statement, and in many cases, it's not even true. The dealer will say whatever they have to say to make the car buyer believe they are making the right decision. However, as you just pointed out, MOST people are making very stupid decisions at car dealerships and driving off in "financial disasters" that leave them in debt for years, carried from one bad deal to the next.

What about a Toyota and your problems will be solved. Motor mechanics say that their one of the best brands. People say they've never had a problem with them ever since. My father owned a Holden Torana once, it could never have been a worst possible time, he was glad he got rid of it. Then he bought a brand new Holden Kings wood which ran on Super petrol which, that kind of petrol is not around anymore and he never had any problems with it ever since. Now petrol can cost expensive over $90 Au a tank, that is if you want to feed your engine with the best quality fuel if you wanna look after it properly. Also, warming the car up before driving is good for the engine cause it lubricates the cylinders, that can be a money saver. The problem is that many people don't have the time. Also, when parking, if changing gears in revers or in drive while the car is moving, that can wreck the car, motor mechanics say it's bad for the car. If someone can afford to buy a brand new car he knows the history of the car but then buying a second hand car maybe it's like finding a needle in a hay stack. Is buying a brand new car good and bad in a way? There's to many wolves out there man that rip people off on all sides.

Guess I was one of the 20%
This whole video was beyond accurate, they got me in the finance office and it was my first car.
I was alone tryna be grown at like 19 and I had already signed some things, but I called my mom and she didn't sound too approving.
I was gonna do it, but I knew the car wasn't all that anyway. After all, I wanted a Subaru. This was a honda, although a newer Honda Civic.
The nail in the coffin was when J went with the honest approach to one of their questions. He asked me what it would take to get me to get the car, I straight said, " I no longer like that price, don't wanna agree to the terms."
He said I'd agreed to it earlier, what was the issue now?
I answered honestly, " In retrospect, I worry about my ability to make such a high payment monthly. I might not be able to afford it one month."
And he tells me, " When I was your age, I didn't worry about things like that. I always thought to myself, I'll make it happen and I'll find a way."
At that moment, I reached the conclusion that they didn't give a damn about me.
They wanted me to sign the rest of documents and would say anything to get that to happen.

So true about the finance guys. When I bought my truck, I went thru a friend who did fleet sales at that dealership. Knew what to pay etc. Went when the finance people went home. Knowing I was getting costs on the truck, I had no issue with financing the truck with the dealership. Signed some paperwork and drove the truck home. Was to return the next day and take care of the agreed finance. Of course, go in. And "Gee, can't do that interest rate. Here's what it will be. So sign here." I said can I use your phone. In front of the finance guy, I called my friend and asked him to come pick me up. I'm not buying the truck". I dropped the keys on his desk and walked out. That guy chased me out the door. He asked "what are you doing". I said, "I'm going home. Thank you. "And continued walking. He said, wait , please wait. Ok. He went in, came back out in minutes. He said he ran the numbers again. And he made a mistake. I can get that interest rate. LOL Of course, Imagine that I said. "You don't want a used truck now do you." Called the friend back. Said. " I'm keeping the truck".

I remember getting the ‘after sales’ girl all upset because I didn’t want any of their shit. Also talked good numbers on the car, likely because they thought they could stitch me up on the finance, and they tried big time. I asked how the same interest rate with no establishment fees equaled $20 a week more than my pre arranged finance that I hadn’t tell them about, he kept insisting it just does but after calling his BS for the third time he said ohh right, well there is an $80 monthly fee which kinda threw the comparison rate off by a bit. They also couldn’t screw me on the trade as I didn’t have one. I have walked away from a dealer twice because they couldn’t meet my needs, a dealer wouldn’t budge on a trade of 50% new sale price on a 10 month old car so I walked, they called the next day and offered $500 more for trade but there was no real good offer on the car anyway so I left it. Number 1 tip personally is don’t get excited about the new car or let them know what you like or don’t like about the old one and be willing to walk away if you don’t get what you want, no compromise.

Long story short, I ended up getting $7.6k as a trade in value and a bunch of free accessories for a car that would cost me extra $600 oh and we agreed on the MSRP price and not the dealership price, which I got on the first visit but I wanted a better trade in value. On a 4th visit the sales guy asked what he should do to get the sale closed today. That's where I understood that they are desperate to make a sale and so I told them all my terms and said that this or I'm leaving. :-) If you are stubborn and patient you can turn this in your favor.

Thanks for this. In a way I'm already taking all of your tips (great videos) by just being a hard-ass. I do my research online on the invoice price, got a low rate from my bank, and walk in and just say "this is the final price I'm paying including whatever fees you wanted to slap on, no extras", and if I enter the finance office, "this is the rate/term I got from my bank so beat it, match it, or I'm out, and no add-ons". Last time I bought my Sienna I had to go to 9 dealerships before the 9th one relented and sold it to me. It's rough and they can make you feel real cheap or bad, but like you've said, you ended up saving thousands, which will always make me a happy person at the end. I can't believe most of my friends and relatives around me, that are very wise and tight with everyday spending, but would still walk into dealerships basically pay full sticker price for all the reasons you've listed here.

Another tactic worth mentioning is the trade-in appraisal always involves the dealer obtaining your car keys which leaves you essentially stranded at the dealership while they drive around the block in your car. Before you know it, you are indeed sitting down inside their VIP lounge because, after all, what else have you got to do? They also tend to hang onto your car keys as long as possible while convincing you how great a job you've done so far at negotiating this deal with them.

Funny that you should mention that. The dealerships don't allow the sales staff to accompany the customer into the finance office, so my customer would lose me as a "coach" when that door closed. I had to prep them on all the high pressure techniques they would see. It was one of the most distasteful parts of the job.
I fixed a lot of contracts after finance... and before the customer left the lot with the car. Remember, it doesn't matter that you just signed the contract. The contract isn't finalized until you take delivery of the car. I'd go out and sit in the vehicle with the customer and look over the paperwork. If there was something in there the finance man didn't tell them about, they went back in and made him do it all over again and get it right. Those guys didn't like me very much, to say the least.

@@KevinHunter I "sold" cars for 3 months...was trying something new. I wasn't with the games, but then again I'm not really a people person either, so it wasn't a fit. I do remember that my attitude was simply this: If someone was there to buy a car, test drive a car, or even just looking for a brochure--that's what I'd help them with. I never once tried to convince anyone to buy a car. The one deal I was a part of where a couple were convinced to buy a car, I was honestly convinced they got over...I was happy for them. That was until I went into the manager's office where he and the other salesman (that was part of the deal) were talking about it. Let's just say the dealership made good money on that deal, which surprised me because I didn't have all of the information. One of the things they kept telling us noobs, is that the game is designed to make the customer feel like they're "winning". It's not really a bad thing, as long as they're happy with the deal, but it felt manipulative. It didn't take long before I was "coaching" potential customers on what was happening behind the scenes. I had a pocket computer way back then, I think they were called "wizards", and I would work out the numbers before they ever made it to the finance dept lol. These days, finance calculators all over the web, and you can check your credit score whenever you want...it's much easier to be prepared.

Nothing wrong with that but also no reason for anyone to have their guard up cause the sales person has it in his mind that if you dont buy this car.. someone else will..
Now, on a real dealership of sharks. Its night and day and that's cause supply of cars that people dont need are abundance, and the demand of the vehicle youre looking for is probably met, with the monopoly of vehicles usually favoriting brand or dealership company. For example, in Hawaii their is only 1 Toyota dealership on the island and if you want the most popular, economical vehicle, that holds value and great mileage? Well guess who doesnt even have to try to make an sale. Compared to the Volkswagen dealership that is 20 to 1 to Toyota, the sales person has a lot of convincing he needs to do to win the Toyota owner of 30 years on why he shouldn't continue ....

Now.. i'm in Australia, so we have carsguide and carsales.com.au and things like that
you should find the one that's closest to you
now pre internet , we had TRADING POST
which was pretty much where every private person went to list their car
SO... PRIVATE SALE IS YOUR FIRST POINT OF CALL
you're also basically looking for the most gullable person you can find
and by the ad you can get a pretty good idea if they are car savvy or not
BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM WITH YOU
you are not car savvy... OBVIOUSLY
otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question
if it was me vs a Private buyer, they are going to let their car go for much lower than what they want.
Example : a little while back i was helping a friend buy a Holden UTE , Holden SS
the bloke was asking $22,000 it was probably worth $20,000 to be honest
i ended up getting the car for my mate for $8,000
Now.. that would NEVER !!!! In a million years happen at a dealership
another one that i was buying a while back, Toyota Echo, Seller was asking $17,000
i ended up getting the car for $11,000
it was realistically probably worth $15,000
so yeah.... PRIVATE BUYERS is your first port of call
BUT YOU NEED TO LEARN A FEW THINGS ABOUT SELLING
the idea of approaching a private buyer is.... YOU WANT TO HAVE THE ADVANTAGE
in your case you don't have an advantage
SO.. I GUESS WE CAN NOW ASK THE QUESTION
"BUT MARTIN..... ok, what about the normal person who wants to buy a car and either doesn't know or doesn't want to know how to sell"
ANSWER : you still go private buyer
because, if you go to a dealership YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO GET FUCKED OVER
if you go private deal then either
the person's gonna take it easy on you and you'll get a fair deal
or, if you get screwed AT LEAST IT'S LESS
      your other option
      GO TO AN AUCTION
however... if you do private sale
      ALWAYS DO THE FOLLOWING
(These rules apply to australia, i don't know how it works over seas, ok)
      - Do a History check on the car
      CHECK FOR WRITE OFF
CHECK FOR OUTSTANDING FINANCE (so you don't inheret the debt)
Never worry about how much rego is left on the car, i mean... it's good if it's long BUT NEVER ACCEPT THE LENGTH OF REGO AS A DISCOUNT ON THE CAR
so.. if it has say 8 Months and someone says... well, there's like $800 value there
      LOL................. NO.. FUCK OFF,
Rego is just a way for the other guy to get a bit more money
DEFINITELY GET A MECHANIC TO CHECK THE CAR OVER
You may have to pay around $100 to have him look it over... BUT DO IT
Now.... if you learn a few basic things about a car you don't have to do this
SO IF YOU WANT TO LEARN
      DO THIS.....
Ask your local mechanic as he's servicing your car to show you a few basic things
on what to do look out for
if he's a good guy he'll show you without problem
if he's a dickhead he'll tell you to get out of his garage
THEN FIND A SALESMAN AT A DEALERSHIP AND ASK HIM IF YOU CAN TEE UP WITH HIM AFTER WORK.
ASK HIM IF HE CAN TEACH YOU HOW TO BUY A CAR PRIVATELY AND HOW TO GET THE ADVANTAGE OVER PEOPLE
this might be a tough task because most salesman may tell you to fuck off I'TS JUST THEIR NATURE
but you might get the odd good one
offer to buy him lunch, your shout or buy him a bottle of Jack Daniels
      OR YOUR OTHER OPTION
Go an actually work in a dealership or car yard for say 2 or 3 months YOU'LL UNDERSTAND
      THAT'S MY ADVICE
      Stay away from dealerships
      Buy Private
Get yourself skilled up on cars and sales a little I'TS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT
      if you can't
Get an expert to check the car before you buy it
      DOES THAT HELP

Great video. Nice work and presentation.
Recently purchased a car AFTER doing our homework. Took multiple visits to a dealership (some of the visits involved sitting down inside!). On the day we purchased that was the only reason to visit the dealership - to sign the contract. We were ok with purchasing that day :-).
On previous visits it was pretty clear I knew what I wanted and had done my homework on the various models and specifications. We did test drive a couple of cars - and went home afterward.
Picked up the use of many of these tactics and did not mind. KNOWING what is happening is very powerful. Some of those questions are kind of obvious and we would expect a sales person to dig. If you are only going to buy a car that works for you, they need to know what the requirements are.
My wife (who was with me on all visits) thought I was a little 'rude' to the sales guy. I wasn't rude - just firm and respectful. Kind of used laughing and 'you have to be kidding' as lines to brush away certain leads. My wife has no idea about the tactics so well described in this video. All I was doing was 'playing the game' to my benefit and defending us as best I could.
Full disclosure, brand new (cheap) car. Was no trade or finance involved.
Purchase day I guess the D=10 (we needed a second car), V=10 (was the exact car and spec we wanted, F=8 (was obviously made very easy to buy on the day) = R=108.
For the pre-visits would have been:
D=3 (we were not in a hurry), V=8 (Kind of knew what we wanted, but open to options), F = 8 (same as above). R=24.

Same here but the manager sent the hound(salesman) after us, trying to ambush(close the deal, not actual home invasion) us in our home, because we did a test drive and they had our address from the driver's license. Good thing they gave up after two times when we refused to answer the door/phone from them, it just showed you the length they are willing to go to 'close' you for good.

Thank you for sharing. Most of the car salesmen I met in my 40+ years buying cars are slime. I have a fool proof method I use when buying a new car: After we agree on a price I always say "let me sleep on it" If they say "this price is only good for today" I get up, walk out and go elsewhere.

@@sabrinae5576 Just know what those cars are selling for and the blue book then don't let the salespeople talk you into any stupid fees or duplicate fees.
Also, try to ask for the "out the door" price before you come in that way there can be no surprises.

    • @canaanwinthrop2463
      @canaanwinthrop2463 Před 4 lety +2

@Sabrina E negotiate and agree on a price via email. Many awesome deals are actually non-negotiable. Mine was already a smokin deal. Ask them to email you a “Buyers order”. It will state car, VIN#, mileage, final price etc. I bought my car from a dealer 2,500 miles away. I sent the buyers order to my bank and they overnighted a check to the dealer. I flew in and drove my car home. I saved $3000.

Last time I bought a car when the salesman drew out the 4 square thing I took it from him and ripped the bottom 2 squares off and told him I was only interested in the top 2. And that unless I was happy with how high the first one was and how low the second one was I'd be walking.
Also, do not fall for their trick taking your drivers license for a copy in order to do a test drive. They will hold it hostage trying to keep you there longer. I always photo copy it before I get there and when they ask for my license saying they need to copy it before test driving I had them the copy I made. Also, make sure to keep your trade in's (if you have one) keys. They will "lose" them as a way of keeping you there longer as well. When I've traded in a vehicle I hand them the spare key, keeping my copy so when they pull that "we can't find the keys" BS I tell them fine call me when You find them and I'll come back to get them.

I wish someone would try those things on me. Hell would rain down on that dealership the likes they have never seen. They might give me a car just to STFU! How the hell does keeping my license, which I need to test drive the car anyway, make any sense. I don't talk shit unless I have driven the damn car first. So keeping me there while they copy my license does nothing. Loose my keys. Does this actually happen?? I would drive off in their car. I would hope they call the cops. This would be the best thing ever. They woud have to pay me to keep this shit off the evening news.
