  • This 1982 Honda XL 500 is one of the best deals I ever got on Craigslist, and definitely the easiest fix I have ever come across. Check out what was wrong with it. The engine didn't want to stay running. It was running very poorly, back-firing, and developed low power. Most of my attention was focused on the carb, and you'll never guess what I found...

    Nice Dude!!! What a score!!!
    I literally just took the carbs to my carb guy for rebuild. My neighbor gave me a 79 that had bwwn sitting un his back yard for 10 years (I know!!) It's California but still a lot of surface oxidation and rust. and nowhere near the condition yours is in. Gonna try to being her back to life, good thing is title is clear and no back fee's.

    There were many issues with the 500 up until 1983, when the design was completely updated: Two Carbs, Four Valves, Two exhaust pipes for a single 600cc cylinder, other improvements. I have had one of these 1983 XL600R's since 1985. Mine still runs fine. Rode it in the Anza Borego desert a lot. I have had two different camoflage jackets for all of the red parts. The '83 and newer was known to run and complete the Baja 500 brand new out of the box. Mine is unkillable, and has the name "Heart Of Stone" written on the frame under the fuel tank.

    I had a similar thing with a honda cb350s-g, the guy had pulled the carb apart and rebuilt it, but there's a little valve that lets fuel into the carb when the float drops, and it wasn't connected, consequently the first time he started it, the bowl ran empty, the valve got stuck blocking more fuel from refilling it and the engine stopped, I bought it as a non-runner, got it off the van when I got home and had it running before it went into the shed! Deals like that don't come often!

Btw, I had an 85' XR500...what a monster. I'm only 5',5" at 115lbs. What a beast to get that thing kicked over. Also, your XL looked like it had that Jake Brake... compression release. That really helped me. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

      Hi Harry, I've got the same bike and have gone through it end to end very thoroughly. The carbs can be 'restored', there are generally enough parts available to get them running pretty good. But what I ended up doing that was so much better was putting on a new Mikuni flat slide carb with an accel pump, and it rips like a much newer bike now.
      I know that probably sounds expensive, but you will likely find that when you add up all the small parts you will need for the original carb it adds up to well over a 100 USD. The high end Mikuni is not too much more. For around 200-240 you can have turn key performance that the original bike never had. The craziest of all, they come jetted nearly perfect for your bike right out of the box.
      The carb is the Mikuni TM36-68, this exact number gets you the right fit and the accel pump. Available on Amazon and ebay from a number of sellers.

      @@StrangeGarage Also, lol, it's funny... That little clip towards the end of your video where you're launching that plastic bottle in the air reminds me of something I once did as a teenager. I made, what can be likened to a bottle rocket, out of a 2 liter plastic pop bottle. I taped 3 aluminum arrow shafts to the upside down bottle, each of them with their lengths extending downward, drilled like 1/16" to 1/8" hole in the center of the cap, and added about a cup to a cup and a half of water to the bottle, then used my air compressor to pressurize the bottle with varying degrees of pressure, up to over 100psi. It flew well over 100 feet in the air. It was kind of stupid actually, not safely testing the integrity of the bottle in a safe manner though. I over pressurized it once, causing the bottle to burst with incredible force, causing it to completely invert, wrapping itself around the hand I was holding it with while filling it, so tightly that it was difficult to get it off, lol. It did hurt a little, making my hand go numb, but I feel lucky, as I think it could have been much worse. The things kids do huh? lol

    Hey man, I love your videos and how you explain things. Great insight!
    I've acquired the same bike and model, and it runs great - the only thing I've been having an issue with is the throttle sorta getting stuck. At times, when I give it more revs, and pull back the throttle - it just stays there revving... and I need to give it a twist or two to make it "calm down". Did you have an issue like this, or know what can it be?
    Thanks a lot!

    • @StrangeGarage
      @StrangeGarage  Před 4 lety +1

      9 times out of 10 it's just an old throttle cable getting stuck. Put a little lube inside the cable sheath and see if that helps. If it does then buy a new cable. Otherwise it could be a sticky throttle valve itself. Just clean it real good and the problem should go away. Thanks for watching!

    • @jameshisself9324
      @jameshisself9324 Před 2 lety

      I have the same model. If pounding on the rear axle (only recommended with nut in place to avoid mangling the threads!) doesn't budge it you likely have rust inside, between the wheel bearings inside the spacer sleeve inside the hub. It will eventually move but it can take a lot of massaging.
      I would trying hitting both ends (try to avoid using big metal hammers, you will damage your axle and new replacements are not available) back and forth alternating one side then the other. If you have the nut off spray some penetrating oil designed to loosen rusty bolts where the axle goes inside the wheel bearing. It will be difficult to get the oil past the bearing and inside the spacer where it needs to be, but work it from both sides and let it set for days. Come back and pound on both sides trying to work it back and forth from each direction. Apply more penetrating oil. Heat would be ideal, but getting it to the inner spacer is difficult with the bearing in the way. If you have a torch (don't bother using a heat gun, not hot enough) heat the axle and the bearings as hot as you can get them and some of that heat will transfer to the spacer through contact.
      Continue using this method over any number of days as is necessary. IT WILL WORK, it just requires patience and perseverance. Replacement wheel bearings are widely available so don't worry about keeping the ones you have good, that will likely be impossible.
      Stick to it. These are great bikes, once all of the issues get worked out from sitting or wear they are fantastic transportation and just fun to ride everywhere. GOOD LUCK!!
