The key to proper Alocasia care is do not let them overhear you talking about them- doesn’t matter if you call them like you see them ie a major pain in the butt, or if you brag about them having more than 5 leaves. Guaranteed if they hear you you say a single word they’ll drop their leaves. (I’m in my car writing this)

Adding 3 grow lights to my living room has made a drastic difference... About 35 plants only receive sunlight in the evening when it's summer. So in fall and winter they have about 1/8th the light of what they ideally should be getting (they are more than 3 meters from my other windows). I am now confident that my indoor plants will be happy year round :) I started checking this because you talked about the realities of light values indoors, keep preaching 😄

The Sansi grow lights are amazing. Here in Denmark, it's winter now and we only have around 7-8 hours of grey daylight ☹
I have 3 of the 2x 10W clip Sansi lights on for 4-5 hours every day and it works amazingly well
Never thought I would be able to grow fresh chillies this time of year 👍🏻
My apartment is only about 20C, but it seems that a lot of light is more important than temperature

I’ve definitely adopted your mantra. “It will always grow back” and chop much more quickly now.
Still amazes me how resistant ppl are to measuring light, especially plant CZcamsrs. All can drone on and on about watering, chunky mixes, moss poles, stratum/coir/perlite/pumice/tree fern fiber/pon/leca/original garden of Eden soil, but no information on light, save “east facing window” aside because somehow, how much light your featured 2023 favorite wish list dream IG award winning plant is getting is “too technical”. 😂
Also finally broke down and am trying my Alocasia in Pon. Getting water right for them in the winter is too touchy for me, so maybe Pon will be the answer.

Thank you for telling it like it is! I agree with you 💯. I live in a part of very hot, sunny and dry Australia, Sydney Plant Guy lives about 1 hour and 45 min flight and they get lots of rain, sun and a lot more humidity than us,but they also get hail the size of golf balls.
I also started to chop any scraggly or single stemmed plants, the plants are looking much fuller. I use a lot of terracotta pots, even succulents dry out so fast,so I started sealing them with a terracotta sealer, makes such a big difference, and the terracotta still breathes, but doesn’t dry out as fast.I’m tempted to try out the semi hydro as well. Can’t wait to see how it works for you! I do really feel for the lack of sunshine,I had a friend who moved here from UK and she was always scared of getting sunburned as she wasn’t used to our harsh Australian sun. I'll share this with my sister and niece right away.
The light meter is a great idea for a Christmas gift wish. My sister recently asked me for a wish list and I had no idea what to put on said list. In my family we usually give gifts for around 50 £ max, which is fine, but if I really need or want anything in that price range, I'll eventually buy it myself.
My wish list is usually the most boring ever 'T-shirts, boxers and socks' 🤣😂

It's great that we have the option to go (semi)hydro. For me, using soil is fine. Having heard the common pro's you hear from people who use it a lot/solely, the benefits are clear, but the initial cost and different care routine will probably deter most people from fully switching over. As soon as I start having real trouble with a plant, switching that one plant to leca would be a no brainer though! And once I have a bag in my house, I reckon I'll end up switching a couple of plants over because of the better growth rate 😆😆

cactus, succulents and a few others are in soil, my big monstera deliciosa is in soil as well, but mainly because it´s so big that repotting will be a night mare, also it´s in a selfwatering pot from ikea (don´t recoment this type of pot) and I have zero clue what´s going on with the roots, I asume they are all in the water reservoir and I wont get the plant out of the pot :( I bought the secong 30l bag of pon and hope I actually repot it this time and don´t use all the pon for other plants again :D

Thanks for the wonderful video!! Great as always! 😊 I do disagree with one thing you mentioned, though, the detail about leaving a plant in bottom-water overnight. I've been bottom watering my plants for many months, now, and they LOVE it! 😊 But I accidentally left a young, flourishing Lemon Verbena in a bowl of water, overnight, and woke up to find it mushy and drooping horrendously. 😔 It sadly didn't make it.. I'm still sad over it, as it was climbing very high very quickly, and I had become quite attached. But alas, I learned my lesson.
Now I always make sure to set a timer for 15 minutes, and don't let them sit for more than 20. 😊 No problems.
Maybe it depends on the breed of plant. I've learned from experience that herbs are especially finicky, and far more work to take care of than let's say typical, tropical houseplants.

Prime example, we bought a bag of Miracle Grow Catus and Succulent mix, it has sat around for a bit, unopened mind you. We opened the bag a few days ago and to repot a snake plant, low and behold the bag was loaded with, you guessed it, fungus gnats.

I grow all my alocasias in Lechuza pon with Lechuza slow release fertiliser and nice light and temperatures above 18 degrees and never experienced dormancy. They grow throughout winter here in central Europe without grow lights (Silver Dragon just finished blooming)- winter doesn´t need to cause dormancy. I highly recommend Lechuza pon with self-watering system for them 🙂

@@SheffieldMadePlants Sun rises at 7:30/8:00 and sets at 16:30 + gloomy days. No grow lights, only large northern windows on 2nd floor. My location: Czech Republic. Room humidity: 60 %.
My alocasia Silver Dragon has 10 leaves and finished blooming last week. Other alocasias don´t bloom yet, but keep all their leaves and continue growing at about a rate of 1 leaf per winter month. I bought them all as baby plantlets in 5 cm pots (only Azlanii I grew from corm). This is their 2nd winter with me.
I swear that winter outside doesn´t need to cause dormancy in alocasias.

Dear Sheffield! I appreciate you sharing with us your knowledge and expertise. Personally I’m using some of your advice and it worked very well for my plants. But I have this nagging thought in the back of my mind, especially when I saw your video about plants that you wanted to discard., among them I found my favorite pilea. Every plant needs its personal space to be attractive and to bring joy to its parent. If many plants are just squished all together on one shelf it doesn’t look good. I believe it is better to have fewer plants, only then they will reach their full potential, like my pilea for example - she shares the entire windowsill with peperomia, I turn them around every time I water them and they look gorgeous. Once it’s overgrowing - chop the top and multiply, make cuttings for your friends. So, yeah - less is more! 😄 Appreciate your every video, Sheffield! Keep them coming!

They work well enough to catch some adult fungus gnats but don't do anything for the eggs and larvae. 🥺
For that you have to let the top two inches of soil dry out and use insecticidal soap or change the soil completely, diameteceous earth and some live wiggly worms work.
Did you know they only live 10 days but they can have up to 300 babies and it's about two weeks of incubation and they don't need a partner to multiply.

Mr Sheffield, I have a huge problem. Completely unrelated to the video topic but I need help. I got a zz plant from Walmart, it’s like an everything store, groceries clothes electronics garden etc. I brought it home without checking the roots. Of course, it had root rot. I cut off the infected roots, hosed off the roots, and put it in all new soil. It’s been a few months and the roots continued to rot, even though I’ve watered it like twice since then. It now has like barely any roots and I don’t know what to do. My only idea is hydroponics and to just grow it in water. Would that work, or is there a better way?

I'm in Australia 🇦🇺 and I ignore the plant light requirements. I have eastern windows here and the plants that require a fair bit of light are right in front of it. My Calathea table is not. It is underneath a western privacy window( so it's small and high) The west side of my house has hight lily pilly trees right beside it so the light is dappled. It's spring here and my Calathea table with 10 of them on it is approx 10 to 12 feet from the eastern window. They are all happy here and any closer would burn even in early morning light. I found this out with my first Calathea I bought a couple of years ago. a Rattlesnake one It was in the eastern window ( I read the label) and it burnt. So now I have them where they are with none of them getting any or very very few brown tips. So definitely a distance from what they recommend. Yes I read the labels now and make my own judgements with my plants. Ignoring labels when needed.

Rethinking terra cotta pots. For me and the environment, I use them almost exclusively. They work out well for plants that need to dry out completely between watering. For plants that like constantly damp soil I like to keep them in a saucer of water as I can tell easily when they aren’t damp and have never had a problem with overwatering in terra cotta, thus never had fungus gnats. They also work very well with wick watering. Give terra cotta a rethink. 👍🏻

I think i finally defeated my fungus gnats with neem cake! You just mix it in a gallon of water, sit it overnight, and water the plants with it. It kills the larva and the adults don’t like it either so it’s a good time to squash or trap them when they all start flying around. Nematodes are probably more effective but i bought a huge bucket of neem cake for pretty cheap that will last me ages. Bonus- it has some nutrients and is a light fertilizer!

Over 500 million plastic pots and trays are sold every year and they all eventually end up in the landfill where they pollute our air, water and soil. The plastic pots take 500 years to break down creating methane gas which erodes the ozone layer. The environment is more important than your plants.
