      Don't surge when you take your turn on the front. It's especially rude to the person coming off the front who might be spent and needs to catch his breath. You could blow him out the back and string out the whole group in your quest to show everyone how strong you are.

    If you are riding in a group don't ride four abreast across the road blocking the way for other riders who may wish to overtake. Keep to the left (or right if you drive on that side in your country)

    People that shout for every wrinkle in the road. One group ride was just "hole, hole, gravel, hole, covers, leaves, hole" for mile after mile. Get some 28s and deal with it.

      All the rides I've done it's been very much the opposite, you could hear a pin drop and people don't call out when pulling out at junctions either. Not a peep out of people. I normally point at smaller pot holes and call out the big ones that could have you off.

    • @AdamBoothUK
      @AdamBoothUK Před 7 lety

      Shouting "clear" at junctions is the most useful, helps keep everybody moving along. I'll shout out big holes but if you can roll through it I'll just point. Gravel on a bend gets a shout but not if you're in a straight line.

    I've done 4 Sportives in the last year and, while I've enjoyed them all thoroughly, in each one somebody came huffing and puffing past me, pulled across and then sat up or even started freewheeling right in front of me, meaning I either had to brake abruptly or go around them. Please don't do this! If you want a break, just sit in behind.

    Tip that I'm sorta surprised you didn't mention: have a bike computer that shows speed if you're going to attempt to work in groups. I would guess that anyone attempting this would already realize that specific groups like to hold to some speed (each group to its own), so when it's your time up front... it's your time to make sure you're hitting the speed that the group you have been hanging on the rear or middle of up til that point.

    Exactly: its not a race if you decided to start on the back: Don't get all Sagan from the start then make my life difficult by stopping suddenly on the steep hills because you burned all your matches on the previous descends. Just last week i had to be careful up the steep hills because people were droping like flies and all over the road almost hitting me.

    Yelling out "slowing" or "brake" in any group ride is important. I finished my first race season in college, and that's one of the biggest annoyances/safety issues with
    racing. Super fun to race, I totally recommend it!

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 Před 7 lety +1

      I meant "yelling" as in calling out. Although in windy conditions or when several rows of people behind you need to hear your slamming on your brakes, you might actually need to yell so everyone can hear you and not cause a pile up.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 Před 7 lety

      There is definitely a need to yell, so you're as sure as you can be that everyone heard you. I don't mean scream, but frankly if we are traveling along at 20+ mph the chances I'm going to hear your normal voice are zero.

    The no overlap thing is so important. I made this mistake and paid the price, front wheel broken and was lucky to not come off. Think it's important not to follow even people you ride with normally - that's what I was doing but it was a rider in front of him that veered sharply and pushed him back into my wheel. Just keep a bit of distance :)

    I had my first major bike accident yesterday, if I wasn't wearing my helmet I would probably be dead going to remember that whenever I am running late and think I don't need it, I have not checked my bike frame yet as I injured my hip its hard to kneel down nothing is fractured though just badly bruised, but my frame is Aluminium it should be fine unless its actually cracked, destroyed my left shift lever though guess now I have an excuse to upgrade to 105 5800.....if only I could afford it xD

      I hope you get well and back on your bike soon. I never used to wear a helmet until my wife bought me one for my birthday and insisted I wear it. One week later, I crashed. After I got done looking over my hands, knee, bike, etc. I took off that helmet and saw the big dent in it. Occasionally, I'll be in a big hurry in the morning and forget my helmet. I always realize it within a couple of blocks, and remembering that day years ago, I always go back home and get my helmet. I'd rather be late to work than never arrive at all.

    • @thatwolffe3802
      @thatwolffe3802 Před 7 lety

      Doc took one look at the damage on my helmet and said, if I wasn't wearing it he doesn't doubt I would not be here anymore, I know how you feel I am always going to wear a helmet from now on, even if I am only going out for 10 min on my bike, I always thought it was cars and potholes I had to watch out for, the thing is what got me was some black ice on the road.

    a pet peeve in sportives is other rides pulling in front and then slowly down. I am confronted by this often, as I am an older female cyclist - therefore some cyclists (mainly older men) think that they can ride faster than me, but they can't.... ditto for clipping in and out of clipless pedals... some are smooth while others wibble and wobble around causing havoc in amongst the group.

    If you are slower - let's face it you know who you are - please stay to the right (or left depending on country) so that other riders can enjoy their ride at their pace. Along with that, don't insist on riding side by side talking with a friend and effectively creating a rolling road block for the riders behind you. You can talk riding in single file immediately behind your friend. Trust me it is possible.

    the one thing that annoys me at sportives is when you come to steep climbs and people decide to slow down almost to a halt or even get off the bike in the middle of the road. I can understand that not everyone will have the ability to climb fast and may struggle. But it is Etiquette to move over to the left hand side of the road (If your in the UK) just so you don't block any fast climbers.

    Don't show up with new bike/gear/wheels without doing a shakedown run previously to the day. Not cool when bottle cages come loose, chains fall off or bang around due to untuned derailleurs or your bars/stems slip and you end up in the ditch within the first km, etc. Your bike should be silent and tight and should NOT be a hazard to others.
    Also, make sure your bottles fit properly in the cages. They shouldn't be rattling around.

    Call out "standing" if your getting out if the saddle! I've seen so many incidents when riders jump out of the saddle and shove their bike backwards into the guy behind! The gaps always close between riders as you hit the hills so you have to let the person behind know your standing.

      I noticed you commenting the "don't yell it" or "there is never a need to yell anything" comments, and Dennis said "announce". Maybe you just have a problem with yelling in general? Personally, I appreciate it on a group ride. I don't have perfect hearing, but even if its way louder than needed, I don't really care since I get the message loud and clear without wondering "what?" and then realizing what someone meant after I smash through a pothole, or nearly get ran over by a passing vehicle. Plus there are usually several people behind that wouldn't hear it (unless every single person announces it). I just figure if its worth pointing out a road hazard, its worth making sure its heard.

    My biggest issue is with the mamils who think they are on a time limit. If you want to ride against the clock, do it on your own time, not in a sportive. Aggressive riding like that annoys others, causes dangerous situations (because not everybody is used to your riding style) and gives you 0 respect from everybody else.

      Also true. I still see the occasional garmin edge on there though. Does the wahoo use a similar hub mount? I can't keep up!

    You forgot to add the caveats. If you're riding with French and Italians riders it's not worth getting upset if they never do a turn, ride like it's a race and descend unsafely.

    Riders climbing off their bikes and walking up hills. It's embarrassing, seriously, especially when they are riding £2000+ bikes and wearing team kit. If you can't ride up a hill you are not a cyclist. I expect a few people to be caught out by 25%+, but walking up a 10% or 15% is just ridiculous. Enter the family fun ride next time. I would rather rupture a lung than walk.
