Single-Handed Sailing Circumnavigation: The Voyage of Fathom - Part 1

- From 2016 to 2020 I sailed single-handed around the world on 'Fathom', a Vancouver 28 pocket cruising boat after leaving my job, career and land life in my wake. My voyage was the adventure of a lifetime and I returned home to the UK 4 years and 3 months later. 37,200 nautical miles had passed under the keel in a solo circumnavigation via the Panama Canal and South Africa. This is my attempt at piecing together a 2-part film about my adventures in the Voyage of Fathom. I hope you enjoy watching.
Part 1:
In this first episode, I depart the Isle of Wight, UK, in May 2016 and sail south to the Cape Verde Islands before crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean. After transiting the Panama Canal I cross the Pacific Ocean in 2017 and the Indian Ocean the following year before arriving in South Africa in late 2018.
My boat is called 'Fathom', an 8.5m Vancouver 28 built by Northshore in 1991. Long keeled, cutter rigged and with plenty of storage, she is the perfect pocket ocean cruiser.
From swimming alongside dolphins and sharks to humpback whales and manta rays, perfect tradewind sailing to storms and breaking waves, trips on dugout canoes in the San Blas to Pirogues in Madagascar, there were plenty of unforgettable experiences.

17 minute video and it took me sailing around the world……how many other CZcams channels make a 30 minute video describing how to change a joker valve. Amazing video thanks for sharing. 👍🏻🇨🇦

Respect!!! What a humble video. This is proof you can do it on a small boat. No drama, no BS just sailing around the world. SO many CZcamsrs act like they will go around the world and never make it. This video should have way more views.

Wife and I cruised the Pacific around 1980-82 and 1991-94. We are older now of course and watch quite a few videos of other people's travels. Yours is the finest production that we have seen. You stick to the basics, with excellent photos as well. Thank you for provoking our wonderful memories of Polynesia. If you ever go again, do NOT skip NZ!

One has to admire these lonely sailors, it was barely two hundred years ago when men viewed the oceans in quite a different way: they were ever-changing, turbulent, eerie worlds filled with green seas of darkness and vast monsters, ship engulfing storms, ghost ships, sirens and multi-legged giant octopi that crushed passing vessels for fun. To set course into the unknown a terrible risk.Well, it still is a risk, what I admire is the fortitude and endurance of these chaps, who make it all look pretty uncomplicated. They must have a lot of inner depth.

Hard to adjust to a life at home after all that. It's still in me after a quarter way around as crew in the 80's! I think the scenes of your boat from the other boats show the solitude and vulnerability of a small craft far from anywhere.

@@Anmeteor9663 Thanks for your appreciation. I think if people can give themselves the time, or afford the time, they can accomplish a lot. Often there are ties, work or families to limit the time. A new generation of sailors are now setting off with a lot of enthusiasm but little experience or money. CZcams videos like this one are a great incentive. The satellite age makes things easier and safer, weather routing etc but the casting off and leaving 'normal' life is the same as ever.
