I am Australian. I walked this section of the trail in early April this year. As it was early spring there was not a lot of green foliage around in some places.
The cherry trees were in bloom, masses of daffodils in the gardens and many other flowers along the way. Just like in the anime movies I have seen. No bears were encountered. We stayed at the Hanaya ryokan near Tsumago. A wonderful experience.

Visiting the post towns has always been a dream of mine. My dream place in Japan is the Setouchi Islands... the landscape is beautiful, and it has a kind of retro-Mediterranean feel to it. Reminds me of going on vacation in Italy as a child a lot. In an effort to mitigate the effects rural exodus, they hold an art fest every three years, the Setouchi Triennale - the next is going to be in 2022. It's awesome to just hop from Island to Island, enjoy the stunning landscape, and explore the different art sites strewn all over them. The people especially are kind and welcoming, so it's a lot of fun. I hope I'll be able to join their volunteer organization and help out once in my life.

Watching from the Netherlands. You have no idea how tough it is to choose a dream place in Japan. There are just too much locations I would love to explore more. Already made a trip to Japan before, a roadtrip from Tokyo to Nagasaki, visiting Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka on the way. I've visited some of them before, but my dream place in Japan is definitely the Fuji lakes or the mountains in Wakayama Prefecture (area around Nachi Falls in particular). Regarding the Fuji lakes, I've visited Lake Yamanaka and camped at Lake Motosu before, but what I want to do in the future is explore it more on foot or cycle around in the area. Also climbing Fuji itself my biggest dream in Japan.

My dream spot to visit in Japan is Okinawa. When I was a teenager my karate club took a trip to Okinawa as that is where the style we trained in originated from. I was invited to go, but my parents said no. Based upon the pictures I saw, and the stories I heard they had an absolutely amazing time. Even though I had to quit due to health reasons it is something that I still hold dear to me.

Watching from San Diego CA, and this is so beautiful! I lived a short time in Sakunami in 1984, in the mountains 45 min outside of Sendai. We used to take the train into Sendai and there was so much rice farming in countryside along the way. I doubt the train is the same, but it was an old one that had windows you could open and you could see so many pretty old houses and so much land. As they were harvesting the rice, each farmer creating different artistic ways of stacking it. It was really something. But all the green and the mountains brings back good memories.

I have such a deep longing for it and all of its intricacies . Thing is , I know that one can ‘never go back’ . Of course I could visit but it would never feel the same . Probably not even similar to back then . Yes , the architecture and the gardens and my favorite cafes , etc. are still there . But … that natsukashiiiii thing would be over the top .

I have been to Japan probably about 6 times now and I have lived there for about 3 years as well and it is not enough time to explore Japan, I can't imagine people just going there for 1-2 weeks and they feel like they have seen it all.
Magomejuku have been on my "must visit list" for a long time, it is so amazingly beautiful and I also love those mountains, juts stunning.

I'm watching from Australia (aka the Prisoner island). This walk cheered me up and had me gasping at every step. Joanna Lumley, a UK actress made a series of videos in Japan and she walked along the Nakasendo trail. She visited a shop, no sure which town it was in, where the owner showed her an old hand painted map of the trail. He unfolded it onto a long table and it included every minute detail, every house etc along the trail. I love your videos Norm, and the genuine sense of joy you share in them. I think it's safe to say it's how those of us watching feel. The moss lined paths and greenery are just beautiful. Glad the bird was ok! Thank you!

I have always dreamed to travel to Japan, but never had the appropriate means or time to do so. Thanks to generous people like you, I can enjoy the beauty and very interesting sights of Japan. I also follow the NHK various railroad itineraries, which are also very informative and filled with wonderful places to visit. Unfortunately my Japanese is limited to three or just four words or expressions, but I fear this not being enough to fully get in touch with local people there to fully understand their values and traditions. Ans since you have asked in this video of yours, I am writing this from Switzerland. I have worked as an actor and stage director in the United States and the United Kingdom for many years, but now I am half retired and would have the time to travel, but alas, still no appropriate means to do so. Also, I have noticed that to really fully appreciate such sights one must be an early bird. Unfortunately, besides my profession, which forced me to be one, I have never really been an early riser, and I know that this is really required if one wants to visit places these days, without having to meet droves of people. Peace and quiet is of the essence if one really wants to enjoy visits like yours. Thank you then for doing it for those of us instead. Very appreciated.

This town has definitely made my list of to-visit places if/when I manage to get to Japan. I'm only 5 minutes into the video & I'm already in love. Watching from the foothills of the Greater Seattle Area, Washington State, USA. Videos like these are helping me decide what places I want to visit & explore and I'm most interested in places like these. I'd love it if you'd include your recommendations for getting there (like you did in this one), where to stay, what to eat and I'd love to know what types of flowers, plants & trees you're seeing on the trail. I happen to love swimming & snorkeling, so videos on best places for those activities would be really helpful too.

I love the tone of awe in Norms voice. I'd like to visit and hike one of the old postal roads - especially one of the more rural ones. And regarding the point 27 mins in where Norm talks about bears, there was a warning sign on the trail earlier in the video (I think it was at the view point).

Hey Norm! I have to tell you, I love your content so much! But I don't just love it for how you show us the beauty of Japan, more than half of why I watch is because you are such a wonderful person, and your excitement for exploring brings me so much joy :)
PS. You would love the mountains, trails, and views here in Oregon. If you ever choose to explore outside of Japan, keep us on your list, we seem to have a very similar climate and terrain to that of Japan.

Picking just one spot that's my dream location in Japan? It's almost impossible. The Nakasendo followed by the 88 Pilgrimage is probably it, but I also have trips of my must visit spots mapped out depending on season. There are so many places, that even if I was living there full time, it would take years to explore. On a repeat: "Thank you so much for this absolutely breathtaking experience" :)

In June 1996 I walked the entire length of the Nakasendo Trail. At that time, the Post Towns were more populated then they are now, and we never wanted for much as local were always friendly and generous with their time.

What I really want to do in Japan when I visit is exactly this. Hiking, exploring the nature, that is my jam for every country I visit. This trail was at the top of my list of the trails I've researched. My one concern for doing this is just the travel logistics so it is nice to hear you talking about those options. Overall totally jealous of you and getting to be present in this beauty. Thank you for sharing this with the world.

Hey Norm, been watching you for a while but just never commented before lol to answer your question, I'm watching from the UK. A couple of years ago I spent some time in Okinawa but I never had much chance to explore the rural areas particularly the yanbaru since I was so busy. I'm going to be moving to Fukui next year to study but during the school holidays I plan to go back to Okinawa and explore the yanbaru and some of the lesser populated surrounding islands. I'm looking forward to it. Anyway mate, keep up the good work, you're one of the best Japan related channels on CZcams and I always look forward to seeing what you do next:)

On 4.27.22 you did the walk the video of the postal route of Japan's Magome juku and tsumago juka for give my spelling. It left me breathless, the beauty I felt as if I was right there with you. I have never seen such beauty the closest thing to heaven. Ever since that time I play the video often its as if iam in another world ,I told my children my other family's to please watch this video. Even now it touches my heart in a way that's amazing. Iam a philly girl and I tell you ,that God is our Creator and this and it's people who have kept the postal towns so stunning for all to see,we love you and thankyou soooo much. That there are more then noise and confusion and so much sadness and that there is beauty among the thorns. With tears in my eyes God bless you postal Town residents and for you bringing it to us

You've probably all hear it before, but I have to share it because of all the bear talk.
The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

Had to head out and missed the end. I was watching from Canada. For a long time I have had a fascination with Japan, but only recently through research and watching videos have I fallen in love with Shikoku and there are many places I would like to explore. To choose one would be hard, but I guess since I have a love for sunrise and sunsets I would go with Sadamisaki Peninsula, especially before sunset so when I was done hiking around the area I could get some pictures of the western skies.

I love exploring places with beautiful greenery, like open gardens and farmlands or forests, and places with amazing views like moutain trails, or snowy villages in winter♡ but because of my health I can't walk as much as I'd like to, so I often miss out on a lot of hiking and walking adventures that I would love to participate in. My eyes are hungry for beautiful scenery, but my body can't keep up with my desires to explore. It's maddening, and even though I can see certain places through youtubers and such, it's never quite the same as experiencing it yourself, seeing the sights in person, noticing all the small things, etc.

Firstly, Thank you very much for the great intro to Nakasendo and the wonderful job on your videos. I am viewing it from Singapore for the 1st time and totally enjoyed it ! It's definitely and I agree with you a million times, it's the most beautiful places I have seen so far from the eyes of your video. I love the green nature and has been a great fan of mosses...haha. Love the way you described the 'Ecosystem' in your video. Its definitely going to be on my bucket list as 1 of the places I must go. Thank you again and I hope you keep making these videos on these amazing places in Japan, places whereby its less travelled...you never know what awaits you at every turn. 👍
