I LOVED Youth. One of my favourite films in the last five years.
I think Mark was wrong about The Great Beauty. It was an absolute masterpiece
+WheresWallace4883. Mark has his opinion about The Great Beauty & I disagree with that opinion. It is possible for people to disagree with each other. Just like I personally think The Great Beauty a better film than La Dolce Vita. Yes I understand it is very inspired by Fellini but it is my personal opinion. & by using your logic I cannot possibly be wrong.
+WheresWallace4883 The fact that I disagree with him sort of means that I think he is wrong. No doubt he thinks I am wrong too. The Great Beauty was one of the most acclaimed films of it's year. Mark Kermode was rather dismissive of it. It's his right to do so. It's also my right to fundamentally believe him to be wrong. It's called a difference of opinion.
+WheresWallace4883 We are all aware of arts subjectivity. This is why it is so debated & disagreed upon. It's called discussion & we are all entitled to disagree with one another. I like Mark as a critic. I agree with him a lot of the time but sometime I disagree. I was simply making my opinion made about a film he reviewed a few years back. What is so difficult to understand about that? Critics disagree with each other all of the time. This is now a pointless discussion.

Saw it a couple weeks ago. Really beautiful film, inside and out.
It's a shame Mark saw the two guys oggling of Miss Universe as just their oggling of Miss Universe. As a 27 year old guy I watched the movie hoping to learn something about how it feels to be an older man including when it comes to sex and attraction. I'm not saying it gave me a ton of answers but surely we are grown up enough to admit that such questions exist and such moments surely occur for men in their later years. I agree that the movie feels like a series of brilliant moments not quite stitched together in a coherent way but I'm fully expecting ageing to feel pretty incoherent itself.

+MH Spirit As someone who's getting on I can confirm you can still get your eye caught by a good looking person. You just have a realisation that you don't have the energy to do the chasing anymore. So you look, don't touch and just admire a good looking person of any age for what they are.
+Findtherat does the value you attribute to chasing also change? Because sometimes I feel like as younger guys we value ourselves a lot/too much on our ability to do so
As a middle aged woman I didn't do that much chasing in my youth but I knew I could if I wanted to. I don't know, but I know I can look at a young actor or bloke and think he is stunning but know I could not be bothered trying to keep up with that! Old guys rely on their bank accounts to do the talking for them. Lol. Cynical me.
I live in Switzerland and sometimes we sing for the cows in the field. They come close and listen mesmerized. These animals are interested in music. It is so much fun. (We usually sing songs that are about cows, but I doubt they understand the text especially because we sing Hungarian.)
Just got back from seeing it and it was fantastic this film is going to stay with me for days.

A wonderful film wonderful directing
If you want to see Sorrentino work with a less absurdist bent, check out One Man Up and also The Consequences of Love. His earlier work shows that he has an incredible ability as far as emotional pacing. With that knowledge, this movie and others become much more about why he breaks things up in a less propulsive fashion. I think this movie is amazing.
For me it sends a clear message against the over-complication of emotion and emotional expression. Not so much in regards to it being necessary or even ideal, but moreso as a counterpoint to the psedo-superior inclination of being 'on top of things' as it were. Love this guy's work.
The Consequences of Love almost looks like a Takeshi Kitano film sometimes, with one of those subdued protagonists that at the twilight of his years finds that emoting is within his reach... Great film
I think of Sonatine most when i think Kitano.. and that story fits with a guy having wonderful "late game" changes; but that guy shot himself 😋

The photography is quality, health farms don't figure much in movies, they should do. A high class movie, I liked it.
Absolutely gorgeous film. The narrative and dialogue, unfortunately, dipped too often in melodrama and cliche. This is the second Sorrentino film I've seen, the first being The Great Beauty. I believe that The Great Beauty was the better film, although it suffered some of the same ills that plague Youth. TGB was more focused, whereas in Youth, Sorrentino stretched himself too thin on quirky characters and quirkier situations, sans true insight. From what little I've seen of Sorrentino, it's clear he has a great eye and unique visual flair, but he lacks the ability to flesh out a DEEP screenplay, with characters we can fully understand and sympathize with. But I do look forward to see where he goes from here on out.

I think the movie has the LOTR problem. A few too many endings. It was great apart from that.
the inclusion of Paloma Faith sounds like the inclusion of Nico in la Dolce Vita, Sorrentino is very good but i think is time he separate himself from Fellini
For such a successful actor, it's pretty scandalous that Caine can't hold a consistent accent throughout this film... in various scenes it's RP, then cockney, then mid-atlantic. The film itself was mostly cinematography...

seahawk124 Damn, you need to watch it again. it's not about what you see, but what's behind you see, the parallel truth in the movie.
Mediocre movie with good visuals and some good scenes, the actors are OK.
