Replacing the timer is certainly an option, but so it fixing the problem with the timer. The timer can be opened up and then just clean the contacts. Inside the 'timer' (which is really a motorized switch) is just a clock motor and an assembly of leaf springs. The contacts get burnt from all the Off/On activity. An emery board or sandpaper will work if you don't have the proper contact cleaning tool. Once a washer/dryer is ~8+ years old, new parts become hard to come by. We just fixed our own timer this evening. $230 for a New timer, problem though is that the normal appliance stores say the part is not available. 4 used ones on eBay $50 - $120 and 1 old, NIB timer for $230!?. Husband and I fixed ours in about two+ hours. This video is just fine but if the timer Motor is still working, there is no need to replace the timer assembly, just open it up and clean the contacts. What do you have to lose? Enjoy!

Thank you so much, I'm 90% sure you're on the right track for my machine, it just quit working mid cycle. Every position works except for the final rinse/spin.

If anyone happens to find this, before you pull your timer out check if your lid switch is clicking. Found another video about replacing it so I decided to check mine and nope no click, luckily a screwdriver shoved in the hole did make it click and let me finish this load. Bonus new switches are $20 instead of $200+ for a used timer.

Thanks Mike B. I was excited that this is almost identical to my washing machine. Then you brought out the REPLACEMENT part.
I wanted a home fix...which is what I got; but, let me describe my problem more. Like you, my machine did not go into the rinse or spin cycles; but, the timer DID continue until the next space on the dial, I followed your instructions to take off the timer dial. I used a can of compressed air to spray it out a little in the holes on the back and beneath the the dial. I reattached the ground wire to the metal part of the cover and plugged it back in. I set the dial on "spin" and popped out the knob. It immediately went into the spin cycle. Thank you for the helpful video. I hope this helps others as well.

Thanks for your comments and of course this video. The replacement timers are quite expensive for such an old mechanical style of unit. The cleaning of the timer with compressed air sounds like a plan and very likely the fault of our Inglis. Now twice, the timer stops without draining the drum. Works after manually starting it again where it was last. Appreciate the advice. Thanks.

I 'fixed' my LG front loading washer which was stuck on rinse and wouldn't drain and move on to spin cycle. Unplug the washer. On this particular washer there is a small panel on the front lower left. You have to pop it open with a butter knife. Inside is a small black plastic plug on the left and what looks like a larger black plastic dial on the right. These are filters that probably need to be dealt with. Be prepared with towels and a bucket or large bowl since the washer is full of water.
First the small black plug and pull it out gently. It is attached to a flexible tube. Point it a your bowl or bucket, remove the black cap and let the water drain. There will probably be some sand or guck. This is slow, so once it drains clear you can plug it back up, push back in place and deal with the filter on the right. But you might want to the water in the washer come out this slow way because when you begin to remove the filter on the right side the water in the washer will gush out. It's much easier to deal with if your washer is on a pedestal with a drawer underneath so you can position a bowl to catch the water. So remove the filter on the right side. In my case it was clogged with two bobby pins, a whole cloth napkin (that I hadn't seen in years) and a whole lot of lint. Put it back together. That did the trick for me.
Side note: another fix - if LG washer shows error code LE - unplug, wait 90 seconds. Rotate drum manually to left 4 times then manually to the right 4 times. Plug back in. This resets something and has worked for dozens of people.

I watched this video and thought I had a bad timer or water inlet valve. After some checking it turns out I had a bad FloodSafe hose from the cold waterside. When it went to rinse it received no cold water and just sat there. Luckily the fix was inexpensive and this video did help me to eliminate the items that were working fine.

heyo . My washer is an Edison by Whirlpool model SM 8525147-A, and it would do this thing where it would start in the fill up cycle, do an agitation cycle, then it would drain and then start to rinse, but at that point it would just keep filling and filling and filling and draining all the water through. I would also hear a grinding buzzing like plastic gears grinding coming from the timer knob. That's what told me that my timer was broken. Well, that and if I advanced it one or two clicks it would resume the wash cycle as if nothing happened.
After searching hopelessly online and coming up dry on the model number I got frustrated and undid the side screws and opened the control panel, and I saw the timer model number 8542050. I went to the internet and entered the number, 8542050 and BLAM! Pages of listings for the timer!
    I WAS SO HAPPY!!!!
So, don't make my mistakes, folks: If you can't find the parts for the model number, LOOK AT THE NUMBER ON THE PART ITSELF. That'll get you there 10 times outta 10.
Also, knowing that I can crack my machine open and fix it myself is a very empowering experience. I recommend everyone tinker with their machines as long as they have down the basic fundamentals of appliance repair. You'll learn a lot!
Oh, and @DIY With Michael Borders, you don't need to undo the 1/4" screws holding the plastic straps. They're there to hold the control plate and let it fold up and back to expose all the wiring and tubes at once. I learned that as I was pulling her apart.
    Happy Tinkering!

Excellent video. My 18 year old Fridgeraire suddenly stopped draining and spinning. On the regular cycle it stops at a point, then doesn't progress through the cycle. I think it is not draining and when it stops at a particular point- it makes this noise, as if it's trying to move onto the next part of the cycle which comes from close to the timer area. If I move the timer a bit ahead, it continues to agitate but it still never spins. I have tried the other delicate cycle and there, it goes through the cycle but never spins at all. The knob will move from start to end without spinning - all it does it agitate. You can hear it want to do something and you hear some clicks but it won't spin. At the end of the wash, there is always a lot of water left - I am not sure if it is partly draining though since the water is about 6 inches deep always - to the same level at the end of the cycle each time. It must be partly draining since I expect if it didn't drain there would be more water? Any help in the comments from anyone would be appreciated!

Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community.
Your symptoms are definitely in-line with a faulty Timer however, also in-line with a faulty Lid Switch.
Our recommendation is to replace the Lid Switch first as it’s a more price friendly part.
Below is a link to our video showing replacement of Lid Switch.
      czcams.com/video/1hTRc-_PnP8/video.html
If replacing this part does not fix issue, it is time to replace your Timer. You may want to purchase both parts so you have the Timer handy if the Lid Switch replacement doesn’t fix issue.
If Lid Switch fixes issue, you can return Timer...or you can replace both parts at the same time. New parts are always a great asset to the continued life of the unit.

Thanks for the reply, with front load, it’s possible that your door lock mechanism is faulty.
This can be figured out by listening to the door lock mechanism after starting the cycle. If you hear the door lock mechanism make a clicking sound after the cycle starts, it is locking door & working as designed.

  • @AtheneNike1

Hello again! I read your comment just now, and as I was editing a reply, somehow I seemed to have lost your comment! How odd.. thanks for replying back so quickly in the morning whilst having your coffee! I have a font loader so I am assuming that you instead of a lid switch for a top loader it is the same as the " washer door lock and switch assembly", for a front loader. Also a very strange thing- this morning for no reason, without me filling the small tub for the fabric softner a moderate amount of fabric softner just reappeared on it's own in the little dispensing unit - it was light blue and clean - almost as if I had added some of it just then....I have been overdoing the softner off late- so could it just be a blocked drainage pipe? I'm guessing back pressure is needed for this to happen but maybe it just happens if you leave a lot of water ( currently six inches deep) still in the machine....

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před rokem +1

Thanks for the reply, door lock mechanism is very possible. Once you turn the machine on and start the cycle, if you hear a clicking sound near the door area, your door lock mechanism is working as designed.

Thanks for checking out the video. Most of the time you run into your symptoms...your timer has faulted and is no longer receiving and sending the correct signals to all connected parts which in return, stops the cycle at random locations...NO FUN. I would try replacing your timer. Also, I recumbent replacing your lid switch as well because that acts as a safety precaution and will put a hold on the cycle near the rinse/spin portion once it fails. The lid switch is very inexpensive and takes 10 minutes to replace. Below is a link to my new video on replacing Lid Switch. Keep me posted and please subscribe to the channel that would be awesome!

*UPDATE* To my comment for anyone who happens to read it. Thankfully my new part was not bad. The large connector got damaged during my original repair because I struggled to unhook it. As soon as I touched the connector this time it fell right out and I immediately knew that was the problem. Even though it no longer “locks/snaps” in, I pushed it it as far as it would go and put a strip of electrical tape going across the top to hold it in and the washing machine went into the rinse cycle immediately. So before you toss out your part, make sure it’s connected snuggly

Thanks for watching, have you verified your drain hose is clean and clear not allowing any blockage of drain water. Also, how is your water pressure coming into the washer?
Is the water coming into your washer the same pressure or speed it was the day you purchased washer... or has it slowed down?
Your screens inside water valve may be clogged. If you clean your screens, which are right inside where are your Hot and cold water lines connect to the washer are...& it doesn’t fix the problem, you will need to replace your water valve.

Thanks for checking out the video. The Timer controls the “Cycle Flow” and continues to move the cycle through the steps. As the internal parts of the Timer begins to wear out...you see the washer stopping at either “Drain or Spin”...
The Lid Switch also is a key part in the cycle...once you lower the Lid/door...you will hear a click. This click secures the electrical current and sends message to Timer to begin the Cycle.
Also...once the cycle gets to the spin portion, the timer re-communicates with the lid switch to verify that the lid is closed for safety purposes...example: you do not want the washer to be spinning with a lid open...water will fly everywhere 😱
I recommend purchasing both the timer and the lid switch as they work together to move the washer through the cycle.

Thanks for watching & yes it is. The internal design of the timer assists in coordinating the washing machine through its cycle.
At any point, any one of those internal mechanisms inside the timer wear out or fail, the timer will no longer be able to continue guiding the washer through all of its cycle.
In other words, the timer guides the washer through wash, rinse, and spin...but can stop at any point during that full cycle if any of the internal timer parts fails.

Thanks for watching, glad it helped. How is your water flow? When you start your cycle, your water comes into your washer through the valve. Over time, this valve clogs up decreasing the flow rate. This can cause your exact symptoms.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thank you for the quick reply! I watched that video, but I'm pretty sure it's not the inlet valve because there is no water running when the washer is off. The water runs throughout the cycle at appropriate times; it'll go through the wash cycle and drain with no issue. When it starts to refill the bowl for the rinse cycle, it just doesn't fill up. It looks like running a bathtub with the drain open. It fills partly just because the amount of water coming in is greater than the drain. It's only happened twice so far, and not in back-to-back loads which leads me to believe it's not a total failure of a part yet. It will resume the full cycle with no issue if I switch it off, move the dial position, and restart it which is why I was initially thinking timer. I could see it being something with the pressure switch as well? I need to check my stabilizer rods as well because it's shaking like crazy even when completely level.

I mean could you replace it incorrectly where the indicator mark is not aligned correctly or do the grooves make it so it can only be replaced in one position? Annony Mouse Thanks for checking out the video Annony Mouse! Great question. The knob assembly is designed to fit on the housing in only one position. This is to prevent any confusion in regards to the position of Knob and position of Timer.
To answer your 2nd question: No...and I’m so glad you asked! At any point the “Lid Switch” becomes faulty, it will not allow the cycle to spin. This is a safety feature built into the Machine to alleviate water flying ALL OVER THE HOUSE with the washer lid open 😱...That definitely would be a lengthy clean up! With this said... once the lid switch fails... the cycle no longer allows the washer to enter the spin cycle.
Below is a link to a video that runs you through the step-by-step process on how to replace your “lid switch” and get the washer back up and running properly. I always recommend replacing the “Timer” and the “Lid switch” since both parts can cause this issue and in most cases both parts have a life expectancy of five years. Keep me posted on your progress.

Hannah King Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment Hannah...so sorry you’re having trouble. Something has failed and we need to pin-point which part.
Try toggling the cycle knob a tiny bit forward past the point that the wash cycle stopped...then push knob in and see if it starts the cycle again. If it does, it can be the “Timer” that has failed which you see in this video.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I think it is the lid switch. Changing the timer on a washer without diagnosing it, is like changing the gas valve on a wall furnace without fully checking it out. A lot of plumbers approach it like that, and the customer gets stuck with the bill.

Thanks for the question. The water valve has a screen inside each hot and cold connection point where your water lines secure themselves to the machine.
Over the years, the screens gather dirt and grime and lead to a degraded water pressure entering the machine...weeeellll.... unfortunately this can trip your cycle and cause your cycle to stop.
      Hope this helps! 😎👍🔧🔩

So I replaced the water valve assuming that was the problem. On the normal cycle only hot water comes out. When I switch to cold it just stops. Switch it to hot and it’s coming out. However it proceeds to wash and once it hits rinse it won’t proceed further. What could that be?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před rokem +1

Thanks for watching, the valve screens being clogged are the most common cause however since you have a brand new valve and screens, it’s possible that your cold water shutoff valve is not fully open.

Is this due to a bad timer? It seems like every thing I've read about faulty/bad timers say that it just stops, but mine continues to make a clicking noise like its trying to move on but its stuck or its having a hard time pushing through.

Thanks for watching & sharing your experience! Is the ticking sound coming from the actual Timer itself?
You are experiencing 1 of 2 issues...
      1. Your timer is wearing out and beginning to work intermittently during the cycle...can lead to stop & go ticking... replacing your timer may get rid of this issue.
      2. Your lid switch is wearing out and beginning to work intermittently. Once your wash cycle gets to the spin portion, your lid switch verifies that your actual lid is closed. It then sends an electrical signal to the timer to continue the cycle and begin spinning. If your lid switch is not working properly, the timer will not continue to the next stage of the cycle... this is a safety feature that does not allow the machine to spin with the lid open...which alleviates the machine throwing water all over your house...not good 😮. Replacing your lid switch is both repair friendly and cost friendly. Below is a link to our video changing lid switch.

Thanks for watching & we hope the video helped. It’s very possible that your Lid Switch has failed. In most cases, a failed lid switch will still make that normal clicking sound however the internal parts and electrical sensor that sends that electrical message to your timer informing it that the lid is closed....has failed. A new lid switch may solve your problem.

Jez Iz Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience. Definitely important that we get this figured out together...from the symptoms that you have mentioned lead me to the Timer or the Lid Switch.

It had been shutting down during the rinse cycle, but now it shuts down during the agitation of the wash cycle. I've started shutting it off after it fills, let it sit an hour then it seems to run through the cycle fine. I can hear a rattle sometimes. Could it be the bearings getting too hot? When the belt was replaced, my daughter got ahead of me and had it back together and put back in place before I mentioned wanting to inspect the bearings. I didn't want to pull it back out. It's in a really tight place.

Thanks for watching Mabbio! We have seen this in the past. There will always be a small amount of water left over in your machine after each cycle however the water will not be visible to you.
Water remaining in tub after cycle can be caused by a clogged Drain Hose not allowing all the water to exit washer.
It’s also possible that your Drain Pump itself is wearing out & no longer strong enough to push all water out of Machine.
We recommend checking your Drain Hose first. Below is a link to our video that we uploaded recently. Definitely check it out!

I discovered the washer stopped working ON the rinse cycle. It doesn't want to agitate either when I restarted the washing cycle. I do hear a humming sound when go go through the different modes. It does fill with water. Is it possibly the timer?

Chris Z. What’s up Chris Z. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience. You are experiencing 1 of 2 issues...
      1. Your timer is wearing out and beginning to work intermittently during the cycle...leading to the stop & go... replacing your timer may get rid of this issue.
Below is a link to my video changing lid switch

Hey mate, I changed my water pump for my Simpson Esprit 650 but it seem to drain on a smaller load but had something heavier it doesn't seem to drain. So could it be the Timer exactly how you changed your one? I have a feeling it is since I already changed the water pump.

Thanks for checking out the video! Usually when you run into load differences that alter your drain performance, it deals with the clutch. What might be happening is your clutch is beginning to slip with heavier loads. At the opposite side of the spectrum, your clutch is still performing great with light loads. I am taking care of an estate but need my washer to work while here, I don’t want to purchase another to just turn around and have to sell. I always loved this washer, please help.

Thanks for checking out the video. Great question!
We recommend purchasing both the timer and the lid switch as they work together to move the washer through the cycle.

I have the same problem, will rinse but won't drain and go into spin, I heard the drain pump could be clogged most likely with a sock, checked mine but it was clear, so they say I need a new pump, ebay has them new for 5 to 20 dollars so no biggy, only I can't get my pump off the motor due to rust, it's also an older machine, whirlpool, any suggestions, if I cut it off will I still be able to put a new one on?

Jo W Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment and experience. That's no fun...rust is a pain! I recommend spraying rust eating solvent on rust areas. WD-40 is another option and let it sit and work into the rust overnight. I ran into rust issues recently...annoying haha. Keep me posted. Hi Michael, My whirlpool washer as of lastnight filled up with water and began it's wash cycle then completely stops before the timer reaches the rinse cycle reading. The timer and and everything just stops and the machine remains filled with water. No sounds, no humming nothing. If I push the knob in and advance the timer to the next cycle it just repeats itself. The only thing it's doing is agitating and nothing else. Do you think this could be the timer?

Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community.
That’s no fun…by chance did you purchase an aftermarket part or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part? Aftermarket parts are great in some situations however a bit dicey in others.
It’s also possible that your Timer is still good however your Lid Switch has failed. We recommend replacing Lid Switch before replacing the Timer again. Below is a helpful link.
