Washing Machine Broken - Will Not Spin - Kenmore Whirlpool Roper

  • There are two main reasons your washing machine will turn on but will not spin or agitate.
Scenario 1: If the washer sits idle when it should be spinning and there is no sound, its likely a broken lid switch. The lid switch is a safety switch that prevents the washing machine from working if the lid is open. When it breaks, it already thinks the lid is open. You can bypass the lid switch using a temporary bypass(video here: ) or you can replace the lid switch which I demonstrate in this video.
Scenario 2: Your washing machine sounds like it is trying to spin but nothing is happening. This issue is likely a broken motor coupling. This part sits between the motor and transmission. This videos shows step by step how to take apart your washing machine to remove and replace this part.

MY Kenmore 90 series HD, stopped spinning, you could hear the motor working. Luckily I had a small wash, the water was drained, Wrung out the clothes, hung them up and found your video. I ordered the part on amazon for next day delivery, 3 couplers for 19$ CAD tax in. Then I followed your instructions. Never knew the casing could come off so easy. Removed the pump, i lifted the washer about 6 inches. Didn't need to undo the hoses, just turned the water off. Removed the motor (2 screws) pulled it out and the coupler was broken in two. Took me about 30 minutes. Thank you, this was so easy!! And I am a woman.. had this washer for 23 years and this is the first time I have ever repaired it. Tomorrow when the coupler comes in, I'll install it and come back to finish this comment. :) Got the coupler, installed it, my washer now spins perfectly!!! Thank you so much, saved me $$$$$$$$!!!!!

Thought for sure the motor was shot on my washer, but it turned out to be just a little $8 part. I've fixed a bunch of dryers before, but never washers, 'cause I assumed they were far more complex. Turns out, they're just as simple, but I wouldn't have known that without seeing this video first.
Good angles, well lit, and you even explained the sizes of tools needed. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this!

After watching your video, I knew this was the problem with my Kenmore 90 series washer. I drove to a local parts store and bought the motor coupler; same one in your video. I’ve tackled other appliance repairs but never one on a washer. It was unclear to me which way to turn the washer over according to your video so I didn’t turn it at all. I googled this and it was recommended not to turn it on it’s back; only the front or side but I didn’t see how this would help so I left it. I think this made the repair extra hard. Getting the new coupler on and flush was harder than I anticipated but I finally did it. Anyway, a few hours later and it’s done. I cleaned up the innards of the housing while I was there. While this was harder than I anticipated, I’m glad I saved the repair charges as I know they would have been outrageous. Thanks for the video instructions.

great video…would this solution apply to a washer with a weak spin cycle? it will spin on light loads but not heavy ones. i believe it’s a direct drive washer just like this one so that would rule out a belt issue.

    • @TightWadDIY

Kenmore whirlpool 110 series. It looks like that on the insides. Sometimes, Maybe 1 out 15 times... When it gets to spin cycle and only drains the water but doesn't spin. At that point I just rotate drum a little and go back to spin cycle and it works. I've already replaced the control unit dial, the motor with coupler and capacitor. These are all genuine oem replacement parts. The washer is about 20 years old. Any ideas what else would cause this?

@@TightWadDIY maybe so, it seems to run and sound perfectly fine. But when it stops even with nothing in it then it shakes and and slams into the side of the case harder than I think it should. I’ve got a load of towels in it at the moment, I’ll watch and see what it does now.

When time to spin, I have to turn the machine off and then back on and then it will spin. It's a roper and I can lift the lid during the spin cycle, and noticed because the drum is forward water misses the drum sometimes but the spinning makes it fall into drum. Can the 2 be connected?
