What Don't Scream Hides Off Camera from the Player

- Don't Scream is a game in which only one thing can make you lose: Your microphone. If you scream, it's game over. But how does the game work behind the scenes and off camera? I'll be breaking Don't Scream in this video to take a look at all the locations and jumpscares in the game, so I hope you enjoy!

Oh, did y’all know that the difference between a graveyard and a cemetery is that a Graveyard is not connected to a church, and ashes and bodies can be buried there, while a Cemetery is connected to a Church, and only bodies can be buried there.
Maybe it was connected to a church before ending up in this forest? Seems like everything in this forest doesn’t belong there. Or that’s just reading into it too much.
@@StowgeeTHE FOREST
Isnt it the other way around?
Then use a language that words are literal to what they describe...sleepyterium
Soooo... What you're telling me is that the game Graveyard Keeper has been lying to its' own players with its' own title.
The plane from 12:55 to 13:12 is actually a Grumman TBF Avenger, which was a three crew torpedo bomber used in WWII primarily by the U.S. Navy, with it being launched either from aircraft carriers, or island airstrips.
🤓🤓🤓
Probably making it a reference to the ill-fated Flight 19, glad to see it's not another "Bermuda Triangle" thing

I think of the vending machines more of as markers, if that makes sense? They glow and flicker, and during the "night" segment that makes them REALLY obvious and draws in players to points of interest, so they don't wander around completely aimlessly.
This makes sense.
Maybe it displays morse code
That's pretty good game design. It'd be REALLY easy to go off track otherwise. It is out of place, and it catches your eyes.
As someone without a microphone, I see this as an absolute win

The arms with a pistol looks like an asset I have used before as a preset camera because they are pre rigged and all you have to do is move the arms to hide the pistol and not screw up anything. However, this is all a guess.
yeah but the movement in this game is really unique. You like tilt the camera as you turn it
@@DrMontrays Thats honestly not very hard. Takes like 10 minutes to setup if you know what you are doing. But to fine tune it of course will take some time.
This whole game is an asset flip. It's amazing it's getting this much coverage, but I guess it is at least mildly competent.
I solved the soda machines lore :
Everything is just a play
And the actors just get thirsty when they run or scream 🎉😂
I feel like people don’t talk about the graphics, it’s so stunning
I think it's more on what it hides that does the trick. A lot of filters on the camera, motion blur, the head bobbing. I say that because you can see in this video the texture are very low resolution, specially the monsters
@@eightleggedanarchistmy nuts itch.
@@eightleggedanarchist yeah, the less your able to view, the harder it is to break the illusion, it’s really quite cool to this about
Unreal engine 5.
Yea, it looks like an authentic shit camera lol
The plane crash might actually be a reference to the game The Forest, i noticed it's crash is similar to it as the woman's body seems to be in the position of the son you look for while the blackbox in the cockpit seems to roughly be the same when the plane got EMP'd.
The forest made my nuts itch.
I was thinking lost, but your theory makes more sense.
Always cool to look at the "behind the scenes" of these games and I'd have to say your land of the lost theory looks pretty spot on...
there's like, 15 ghost girls in this game, whoever made it clearly has a type lol.
Was about to say 😂
This game should be on VR. It'd be more horrifying than playing on pc.
We would all have nightmares for the remainder of the year 💀
Its really interesting that when you put apply that camera filter to the game it look a way more real
Your nuts itch, scratch them, now!
Fascinating, isn't it? What makes these filter tricks so effective is how they mimic specific quirks/inaccuracies cameras have (the way they adjust to changes in light, blurring, bloom, etc.) as well as the ways they're typically handled (shaky, unsteady movement) which tricks you into thinking it looks very realistic. There was a game that used similar tricks to make its gameplay look like eerily realistic looking police body cam footage.
While the camera filter does make it look more realistic, that’s not the only thing that gets removed when he goes into the debug mode. It also doesn’t have any lighting, so you are only seeing the raw colour values for the textures. So the camera effect isn’t doing quite as much heavy lifting as you would think.
@@This-Was-Sparta which game may I ask? you got me intrigued
@@arcanep It's called Unrecord. Not out yet, as far as I could tell, but the trailer had me seriously questioning whether I was looking at a game or real footage.
The vending machines can be seen from afar in the dark, if I'd had to guess why they're there, it's to attract players to those locations by emitting light so they can find those areas easier.
Creepy lanterns, fire pits and torches would work better for that methinks.
@@planescaped Well yeah but the vending machine goes better with the almost liminal vibe that the game goes for with all the random stuff seemingly teleported about.
@@ni__wolf143 That or it's because they didn't want to buy more assets at the time. None of assets in the game are original.
@@Dynamo33 I mean... I feel like they did have some kind of lantern asset, they just went with the vending machine because it fits.
It could be interesting for a game to have a mechanic similar to _Don't Scream_ - _where the player character either loses health, or dies instantly, if the game detects too much noise from the microphone_ - but while also *_requiring_* some smaller amount of noise to be picked up from the microphone to progress, possibly more so at some points of the game than others.
The player should never make too much noise, but sometimes a bit of noise is necessary, and there may perhaps be other times where the maximum allowed noise is even lower, such as when the player is near _(or being hunted by)_ a monster.
In Silence is a asymmetrical multiplayer horror game that uses a microphone to communicate but if you make too much noise or talk too loudly, the monster will be alerted to your position.
This video is perfectly timed. I just finished beating the game and wondered if you were going to make a video showing what the game hid off-screen from the player
those mannequins were like the weeping angels from dr who
Just more horny
or the actual mannequins in the pilot episode
13:12 I can tell you that plane is 100% not a P51 because of the rear turret, I forget the name but I believe it’s a torpedo bomber from WWII
TBF 1 avenger
Fun fact: The pistol in the game(2:00) is G2 from PT Pindad, a firearm company from Indonesia. The name comes from the pronunciation of G and 2 spelled together which sounds like "jitu" which means accurate in Indonesian.
This is interesting to see because I've watched 3 different let's plays of this, and all of them missed the sign at the beginning, so they just go to the plane crash -> mini mart and then just get stuck looping in the forest and rarely see anything but a few repeating jump scares in the woods like the crows and the witch lady.
2:00 Maybe developers wanted to make a game similar to Unrecord, but decided to switch direction down the line? I mean, Don't Scream goes for realistic feeling with first person camera that's a recording VHS camera, so, this is somewhat close to Unrecord's whole premise.
The crashed airliner screams "The Forrest", as it's a spitting image - in feeling - to the beginning of that game.
Not to mention the corpse is like the air hostess
Those ghosts need to put their grippers away >:(
i love the insight of this video into the details of the level design and other aspects easily missed out by larger audience
Good to see that the Character is "Arm'ed"
Nice, I've been waiting to see how this game works
this is legit one of the best videos you've made
20:01 this guy is a pretty good vocalist, I saw him on tour last year
This game deserves all the praise and I'm betting the devs are smart enough to add that "real danger" element critics rightfully talk about. All you gotta do is randomly make one of the anomalies cause damage, or introduce a unique one. Though that's easier said than done.
The soda vending machines could be a reference to cod zombies and the perk colas. The crying and screaming bride with long nails could be a reference to the bride to be witch from left 4 dead

3:09, Could've been a final training flight, a flight simulator can only give so much of the experience so having one non-passenger flight before getting thrown into the deep end would likely help. On such flights they probably just carry non-essential cargo along with them to make it less expensive a flight to do
No because it the tape makes it sound like there are 10s of people screaming
@@DrMontrays Are you saying that qualified pilots and auditors would not be on such a flight? That no stewadesses would likewise be taking their training session on such a flight? I'm sure someone who actually works in the field could come up with many reasons that a training flight could have enough people for that particular recording.
This game is one hell of a way to intensify a walking simulator!
It's funny to watch streamers playing it and dies over and over no matter how low they set their microphone's sensitivity. 🤣
Even seen a play through before and knowing he has mods and such i still jumped at a few of the scares 😂

As a person with arachnophobia, I doubt I can finish the game without screaming at the top of my lungs and seeing a large-ass spider crawling towards me.
Pretty sure there's different levels of arachnophobia dude lol
There's an even bigger spider. But I think it doesn't attack the player. It's just big and standing still.
the strange thing for me is apart from the astronauts, literally every humanoid in the game is a woman
Most likely the monsters are just store bought assets or something similar, of which a large amount tend to be creepy women because... I guess that's the scariest thing to people?
@@frog1405 that's kinda what annoys me with some horror games. The monsters aren't even monsters, they're just creepy humans. Even when we do get actual monsters they're still mostly humanoid. For example most of the enemies from Bendy and the Dark Revival are humanoid. Same thing for a bunch of other horror games. They just go online and yoink some random basic cookie cutter monster or creepy woman and shove it into the game.

@@ChaosOnyx i agree, and also jumpscares on its own needs a category or a genre or a label, I love Horror, but despise jumpscares, especially those up your face. they do nothing but make me jump, regardless if it was well executed or not, its just extremely cheap. but i guess this game is built around that for streamers

I can't play this game unless I'm drunk. The fact that the camera is all blurry and the dying woman's face is also blurred makes it seem like a real found footage movie that was found by someone in this haunted forest. Not to mention the graphics and the audio, it's so real. Probably one if not the most scary game I've played.
I've been waiting for this
This game reminds me of a show called "From". People get trapped in a pocket dimension with random structures like that and at night you have to go inside because theres a ton of monsters goig after you to kill you.
My theory on the headless woman is that she mimics the screams for help of her previous victims that she kills
*This game reminds me of the game Witch hunt to a degree and i believe if they remade that game with some of these assets that it would be amazing*
Your beginning background music is resident evil 4 when he’s in the room with Ashley and the black robe zombies that try to kidnap her while raising the platforms. It’s a red and pearl room.
HorrorScoped if you find more thing about this game, can you show us the jumpscares for the halloween update version? there might be some things you missed that only show up exclusively for the halloween build, like if there are any jumpscare scenarios that start with the mannequins that look at you and teleport
that gun model is a Pindad G2, made by Pindad of Indonesia
i think i know who made that model because afaik there's only one guy made the model for that pistol, originally made for the Indonesian Army faction project for Project Reality BF2
Usefull video Thanks !
I'm wondering if the pistol model is just a placeholder from some sort of FPS kit they bought off marketplace or if they were trying to do a bodycam game and scratched it to make a horror one in its stead
Honestly the game sounds good till you realize. Its not "don't scream" its no loud noises at all. A sneeze will kill you.
How did you remove all the screen effects? Im using reshade and would love to turn down that grainny noise effect on screen or turn off completely
I watched ManlyBadassHero play this, after passing the plane he proceeds to spend the entire playtime walking in circles in the forest lol. My only experience with this game was his video so I had no idea that more than just the crashed plane, woods, and the very end location.
But whats behind that one door surrounded by christmas lights in one of the houses? As far as i know there's no way to open it, is there anything in there?
really hate the fact that he didn't point out the pumpkin with a little "c :" face carved in it
The random door on cemetary is now interactable. Can you do a video about it. It seems like the door is somekind of portal, but the person I watch before didn't enter it and no video about it other than you, please can you review it
I have a theory that the way you die is actually shooting yourself with the gun because one does not die by talking too loud or screaming (unless they had a heart attack)
The bride girl that screams may be a reference to Left 4 Dead as a witch. I thought that was cool.
You missed a jumpscare (or a loud noise at least) at the mini mart where you open a car door
Please do Fears to Fathom Ironbark Lookout and other parts
If I were to hazard a guess as to why the player is a pair of arms and a gun, it's probably because the game is built on an FPS engine, and thus the engine expects the player model to exist to tie the camera to for collision and such, but the arms are always down so as to hide them from view. As for why the model is left in? Probably because they didn't get around to it or it's for identifying player position in debugging.
For the mini mart tape I'm thinking a spectrograph
This is pure Content
The crashes WW2 plain looks like an Avenger bomber. Specially one of the bombers of Flight 19 out of Florida that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. You can see a faded "19" on the side of the plane.
3:09 I could be wrong but I think that's the games version of a black box which is a real thing in planes that records the last thing the plane hears when they crash
You didn't find my favorite one which i find both cool and hilarious, where some creature flies into you from afar with its mouth wide open
The bathroom is related to an scp, normally there would come cockroaches out of the bathtub, fill it and out comes a rotting corpse or something...
you missed something at the house. There's a newspaper. I ain't gonna tell you what it says, but I think it's worth lookin at.
player character is clearly just well armed.
he's a runner he's a track star
Hey, what is that big ass clearing on the minimal at the end (it is southwest from the homestead)
The stairs are probably a reference to 'Search and Rescue Woods'.
18:25 looks like the lady who crawls out of your TV
I just realized a majority of the scares are by women
Maybe is lore related
I think the vending machine is a nod to Zombies mode in COD.
when you interact with every vending mashine the door opens and you get to a hidden area

plot twist: you as the player was hijacking a plane with a pistol and a knife, even shot a few people, but you end up crashing in a haunted forest you can't escape. The dead people from the plane are now haunting you, and they are really mad. They want you dead.
I think the sobbing bride 16:03, kinda looks like the witch from the Left 4 Dead game. If it was on porpuse, it's a cool reference😂
I would really like to see what's behind the door that won't open upstairs at the homestead
20:07 I'd recognize that scream anywhere that's the Pinky's/Imp's pain scream from DOOM and DOOM 2
That Help... SOMEBODY... HELP. Sounded an AWFUL lot like a slightly pitch altered clip of a scene from Gemini Home Entertainment.
Damn, I'd be great at this game. Whenever I get startled, I never make a noise. I just tense up for a moment. This is also the case when I'm in pain: instead of screaming in agony, I'm a silent sufferer.
the thing that jumps out at you didn't have an open wound on its check. That gash had teeth.
I want you to do an off camera video on Silent Breath.
I love the Re4 music so much 😩
Actually the gun would be a genius but kind of genius addition to a mic shackled horror game...yea jump dcares can make players shout, but another of the most likely occurences to make the player shout is gettinv off a great shot at a scary enemy.
I find it really funny how the player dies lol. The camera just gets yeeted
What is the possibility that this is a playable trailer for something bigger?

These planes are Grumman TBF Avengers, an American Torpedo Bomber from ww2. Funny enough the infamous “Flight 19” flew these and were lost in the Bermuda Triangle, so I think you may be on to something with the randomness of the locations. This could also explain the giant cargo ship.
New death just dropped
Death via poorly timed burp and/or fart
eyyyy, i recognize that staircase to nowhere!
i think it was from phelous or wendigoon, back in the day,
the airplane's "cassette recorder" is possibly supposed to be the plane's black box
so i played the game and 2 words, holy shit, its been years since i got scared like that, i had to close the game to breathe this game is very good i do recommend it
oh and there are a bunch of audio scares too, like a baby crying, a man screaming, a gurgling of sorts, i also heard thunder but that might have been my mind playing tricks on me, also there is a tent on the map with a guy inside, and at random you will be put inside a black room with previously mentioned baby crying, and in Markipliers video on this game he found some other stuff
