- This is original early stage performance of John Mayer and David Labruyere. I have had this video since 2000, from when John's career was at the very beginning, and recently found it. It has some amazing songs, and I hope you all enjoy!
Congratulations to everyone who's made it here, now you're a true JM fan
I would also say that another sign of that is traveling to Mexico just to see him with the Dead... In 2020! A M A Z I N G
WOOOOO
Saw this comment on lifelines too, guess I’m a double true fan
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a method to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Dash Felipe Instablaster :)
I love how he messes up the beginning of the "Neon" riff but then saves himself. The ol' classic stage presence "I meant to do that" trick.
Love it.
that was so awesome. he really saved it
it was ingenious!
Damn, thats wild he was shredding Neon in 98? guys got talent.
@@ARLMedia he wrote it when he was 19!
@@brunoerckmam5070 that's insane.
It's wierd watching a live John Mayer neon preformance with the absence of applause for an hour before he can start playing the song
I KNOW RIGHT
That moment when you saw John Mayer mess up on Neon (26:57) then he covers it up to make you think he didn't mess up and you consider the fact that he may have did it on purpose......mindblown
Eric Perkins he's a genius
He's like "oh shit" and then "wait, let me just rip a bass line run"
That's the beauty of improvisational music, homie.
Did You Mean 17.01 Where He Hesitated Before Going Down To The Base Notes?...He Made It Look So Intentional That It Probably Was....Just Like You Said.....The Guy Is Genius Musician.
Well Jesus what is he supposed to do? Appologise to the audience and go off stage? Of course he's going to pretend that there was no mistake, every guitarist that playes on stage will tell you to do that.
Now, of course the way John does it is awesome, cause he is such an awesome player... But it's not like the concept of hiding mistakes is new.
It's amazing that he was at most 23 years old at that time and he was already writing and playing amazing songs like that.
He was smart from the beginning, he didn’t market his cover songs, but his original stuff
No Such Thing 0:53
Back To You 5:53

The Great Indoors 15:19
Comfortable 19:29
Neon 25:27
+Jeffrey George thanks so much man
Jeffrey George what year is this?
gbyoutube18 98
Tom’s Diner 30:15😂
Thanks
The stuff he did on neon was just incredible
No way man! What he did with the guitar on Neon. And he was only 21! Incredible!
he was pretty much obsessed with the guitar since the age of 13 or something, hed have easily had 7000 hours on the instrument at this stage
M Ragunathan lol were you counting?
anas amin yeah I did a rough calculation lol
M Ragunathan i tried to calculate it too and I had a waaay bigger number...in your calculation how many hours per day did he play, as a guitarist this shit is helpful af.
well this was in 1998, so hes roughly 21 here, and he'd been playing since he was 13, 8 years, i figured he would be playing around 20 hours a week(which is quite conservative), so i lowballed it to around 7000 hours, i reckon its very conservative, he probably already crossed 10k hours by this point
He was destined for greatness, even if this isn’t an event center with 10,000+ people, he still plays with his heart and soul.
whats crazy is his ability to keep the backing in his head while doing such complex lead. He always arrives back at the right time, and I'm here sitting at my computer struggling to clap it out in time lol
Mix chords between your lead lines an stuff
i love that you can't hear the crowd and that when he tells his jokes and has little banter in-between songs nobody laughs. i enjoy that thought, even though I'm sure they were.
Always support your local musicians cause you never know what you might be missing ❤❤❤❤🤘🤘🤘🤘❤❤❤
He definitely had that X factor from the get go.
The groove before neon....
I'm a huge John Mayer fan and can't thank you enough for posting this old/"vintage" footage
Oh wow, I remember collecting every random live mp3 I could find of John's back around '99-00. I loved those acoustic tracks from small clubs and I'd get excited every time I came across a new song I'd never heard from him. Man this brings me back, never thought I'd see a video from back then.
Haha wow I did the exact same thing and felt the exact same way. Thought I was his biggest fan. I knew then he was gonna be one of the best of our generation and he proved it
hahaha meee too I knew he was destined to be one of the greats. this is sooo cool never seen a vid from this far back. so proud to have met him twice seen him 8 times n concert. cant wait for more new suff
Hey where can i find your collection?
Definitely! I had quite a few of them when I was a college freshman in 02 but that computer was destroyed in a fire unfortunately. But I also used to listen to an all John Mayer internet station before internet radio was a thing. And I was part of Local 83 lol
Love this so much!! Imagine being there... Like “these are my friends Paul and John, and they're gonna sing a couple of songs they wrote”
Also if you're watching this video in 2021 you're not alone....
Really loving the 10fps
But really thanks for posting this, really shows his roots
such a fresh and raw mind in those days... miraculous seriously.
In 1998 who knew this bloke would be one of the legends?
He did harmony riff on the Great Indoors chorus. That's so badass. This man is genius.
Wow, i bet these people had no IDEA>
John is truly a genius. The stuff he’s doing on neon and at such a young age....men play their entire lives and can’t attain that type of skill. Love seeing these vids before he was huge.
Applause cycle John! Applause cycle! lol I love watching video's of artists before they had live music producers groom their shows. Gives you a sense of what they were like back when they did everything for themselves.
IMO this is the best version of Neon ever!
listen the one of the fish pub, amazing
It is really good, but he's got that one string that is out of tune that is killing me. Best intro I've seen though.
Listen to hotel cafe secret show its so cool
what an insane Neon! sooooooo great!
Him singing over the notes was insanely good. His vocals throughout his career hasn’t reflected the level of skill he demonstrated, during that brief moment in the solo controlling his range and pitch. Amazingly good.
Imagine having John Mayer open for you.
Some beautiful John Mayer then footage. Timeless should be his middle name. He’s so perfect for all times. I love it. I love him
He'd only been playing guitar for 7 years in 1998.
He started playing at 13...
Wait...It is from 2000 so he had been played guitar for 10 yrs(he started playing guitar at 13 1977+13=1990)
@@Guess-dq8fw the recording is from 98, the uploaded has had the video since 2000
@@giothemath john opened from Michelle Malone at that time
here is the reference:
czcams.com/video/2HR3SeWrXFw/video.html
Keep im mind that john was incredibly devoted to guitar, a lot of practice and learning.
Back to you... Total favorite. His music is amazing.
Wow thanks for sharing this! Amazing how far he's come. Cant believe he was this talented at 20.
damn just discovered this today and i really like how raw this vid is😁
funny how that guy David was with him from the very beginning. very nice. some of john's best songs here & great performance. thanks for uploading this too!
David LaBruyere is one of the reasons why John has had success. Dela plays in a unique way, by including in the basslines instruments that aren't actually playing but would be great to have in the mix. And has great skills.
Christine O I know! He truly kept the same circle for a very long time. We he and Chad went and moved to Atlanta they tried to work together but it didn't work out. They went there separate ways but they have recently started doing some things together
Do you guys notice how he's using a Chet Atkins gibson guitar when he first started out like this, just like Dave Matthews?? I mean I love them both, I love the fact that John loves Dave Matthews. There's just so many similarities between the two of them, my two favorite musicians.
Yessir. Was hoping someone else would notice the Chet Atkins as well. What a great guitar.
This is amazing to watch, just knowing the career that follows and the impact that he makes on modern pop music.
É por causa desses vídeos que eu me mantenho de pé na caminhada musical, olha o grande Mayer, subindo ao palco na maior humildade. Isso é maravilhoso.
I am in total AWE....he was then as he remains now a truly gifted musician songwriter!
he was on fire.
Saw John Mayer live 3 times in my lifetime. Back when he was just in some jeans and a tee. ❤️ I'm 25 now. But I remember being like 14 at MSG.
Neon is just an amazing song! so much skills i will !!!
best intro
❤️ my son was always right , you touch people heart with your songs ; it touch me ❤️❤️ . We ‘re from the Netherlands
Awesome cool a star is formed. I saw John live years and years and years after this one
I was in college in ATL during this time & John was playing just down the street somewhere... swooooon
Thanks for posting he's truly amazing
Thank you for this Vid!
I miss this JM
This gives me inspiration thank you john!
It's amazing watching this and seeing his transformations over the years....all his lyrics and songs had meaning
Wow, I love jazz... and this is when he started? God Bless him.
John always rocks
John's "Lloyd Christmas" phase. Just squint your eyes to pixelate even further, it's him.
Wow 😮 that’s amazing specially the neon part unbelievable, thanks for posting this though. 1998
Wow. I wish I had a time machine SO bad!
Derek Rainwater you could even go back and talk to him after the show without a pass
He totally would have fit in perfectly at the Berkeley, CA venue I worked at the time - Freight and Salvage. Monster guitarist, superb vocals.
I wonder if John Mayer has seen this?
jpjohnson07 he probably has
I mean he was there, he saw it from the stage 😂 jk ik what you're saying
@@julianmcmanus3384 thats a different thing about being on stage and seing your video on stage
WOW! So glad you posted this. How awesome to see him at such a young age before all the fame. So much talet, so happy people are focusing more on his skills now rather than his personal life.
I have respect for you if this gives you hope instead of squash any bit of hope you had! Can't believe he was that good at 21
I went to his concert in 2019 and it was packed!! Even in 2019. It’s crazy to see this and know where he ended up. He is the last guitar hero in my opinion.
he was super famous with multiple grammys in 2019. what do you mean
this guy is insane
it's also interesting to see how his voice has evolved. especially those high pitches.
I'm just on the first song and I think this is fantastic raw and pure John Mayer
Thank you so much for posting it! Really awesome!
Wow. This is a treat! So pure.
Love this stop animation of him ;)
Comfortable is tender and Neon is brilliant!
This is a precious 💎. I've got this somewhere saved but forgot about it until now.. please keep posting!!
Thank u so much for uploading it!
this should have way more views.
I imagined I was in that audience, hearing him for the first time. Comfortable strikes me as a great song right off. I would be thinking, what a great writer. Neon blows me away for the incredibly clean and subtle guitar work. Funky and tight. All the elements are there in this performance but it would be 2 yrs. before the debut album would be released. So, even after the No Such Thing CD was released he had to perform these tunes for around four years or more total. That's 2 yrs. before the release, and a couple of years after the release. Incredible!
Wayne Dent right on! You and I should chat!
Wayne Dent and remember he had several just marked " demo" that I have and he had several little cd's before the first real one
Thank you so much! This is awesome.
This whole thing is amazing
This is gold joey, you are AWESOMEEEE
I love it and there’s some videos on CZcams where it shows them touring in a band. I saw them all . They were so funny living the van life. I hope they still have them here.💯💯💯❤️
You're more amazing than I ever could have imagined.
Keep up the good work.
This is amazing! Thank you for sharing this!
thank you for sharing this with us!
Genius at work! I mean the dude had the songs produced in his head....please by my records! Hahaha!
OH MY! This is GOLD! 🖤
I used to have the same baggy beige cargo pants lol people this was the style in the late 90s hahahaha
He was amazing then!!!!!! OMG!
Neon... .Man he doesn't bring out that crazy shit like he did back here. I've seen a dozen clips from before 2000 of him just ripping out the slickest jazz riffs on Neon.
Thanks for sharing.
I hope he recorded this...beautiful "so perfect..."
Arrr man I really do love him. What a talent.
Has this guy ever not been friggin amazing on the guitar?????!!!!
NO!
Awesome video!!! Thank you, also here to spread GOOSE LOVE! Rick Mitaratonda
His growth has been influential....from child to adult
So weird to hear him have to plug his own merch on stage.
gonna save this before it vanishes.
uncoverable from the start of his carrier, same crazy
Just wow dude.
Great Indoors has always been my deep cut favorite
Wow john mayer using a Godin Guitar! I'm proud that i've got an godin made guitar
Used to own a Seagull, I do miss that guitar.
@15:09 "this is a song about being stuck inside and getting used to it, called the Great indoors" Oh its feels like 2021 quarantine.
...and now he sold out venues! Wow simply wow!!
SSSSSSO in tune!
This is a treasure
How can someone play that very complicated guitar technique while singing (especially neon). That's some hard stuff dude!
Wow this was cool
With closed captions, i finally figured out the lyrics to neon at 27:22 : 😃
“See the colors chill a rumor and i loved one its a like ass alright she comes and goes ever comes and goes like no one can find a high-pitch cheese mixture detective business always heavy into everything...”
