Mike Tyson's feet were not strictly square on he used a peekaboo style with traditional stance a lot of the time. The man was an anomaly

If you were off the streets you would have no problem in relating to Tyson's style. He grew up in a brothel and had to fend for himself. His style is the raw street style which has been perfected by Cus Damato to an art. Its a very cunning and sly craft where you capitalize on your opponents weakness and always catch them by surprise. Thats how you win with least effort. Its not a Ramboesque bravado style where you get hit twice and hit back harder.
This is how I survived in the streets of Calcutta as a small boy back in the early 90's. Calcutta was a British colonial pocket and everyone was still reeling from the colonial hangover. Small boys would be picked and bullied at school and on the streets. The streets were very different from our forgiving and tolerant culture at home. I shall be ever grateful for having the privillege of watching Tyson play at some point of my early childhood although we never had a TV growing up. It gave me the courage to fight back and I have never looked back ever since. Hare Krsna !!

Tyson would Taylor his stance to his opponent. When Cuss was alive and Kevin Rooney was still on board he was straight up peekaboo. After Cuss passed and Kevin was removed Tyson was still able to defeat his opponents based on his training but slowly you can see his skill level diminish and he became reliant 1 punch power and he started to lose.... it was hard to watch because I truly believe that Tyson was unbeatable in the boxing ring when he fought with Cuss had taught him. I mean the man never got hit, watch his old fights he was like a Greek frigging God. It was unbelievable. No one could beat him. I don't give a shit if you put Ali in his prime in there Tyson would chew him up. Cuss knew Tyson with his style would never lose. Tyson defeated himself.

I was attacked just over a month ago by a druggie. You could tell straight away he was fantasising that he was Tyson. He got a finger in his eye and palm heel to the chin..My dad did a bit of circus peekaboo. He'd still find a corner to protect back. Cover and pop those who got to close. Takes alot of training to fight correctly with it. 🥊

Best way to train it is get a baby and practice with them. They are really into it and won’t get tired from it. Most adults don’t have the energy for much peekaboo but with a baby you will get lots of time in and that’s the e best way to train- through repetitions.

The mention of how Cus implemented a scientific style not common in boxing at the time makes me recall how whenever you hear Mike talk about boxing he sounds like a student of a science. People talk about the ferocity of Mike Tyson, but he was super scary because Cus refined and fused that with science. The Hajime no Ippo trope of a perfect fusion of science and animal.

@@DavidJones-tp9vythe mindset definitely made him better at the sport, but every fighter he boxed also had that mindset (there are exceptions but you have to be a little narcissistic going into a fight with prime mike tyson and believe you will kill your opponent). The reason he was deadly is because he knew the peekaboo style like the back of his hand, watch him in the ring, it's not just that he's powerful, he was ruthlessly skilled, he dodged nearly every punch, and only tanked when he was absolutely sure he will get a bigger hit on the other dude. He had trained since the age of 14, he knew the inside of a ring like it was his own home, he was alert but relaxed, he studied his opponents and adapted in the ring itself, the guy is genuinely just the smartest fighter alive.

You only covered part of the technique.
Mike torqued his body to accelerate the punch and kept his arms close to his body which increased punch power and speed.
He also pushed up with his legs to accelerate the punch.
The arms traveled side ways and over short distances getting power from the legs, body twist and shoulders combined.
They also had a number system which designated blows to different parts of the body and they would work on those combinations.
And IMO the ‘deadliest’ combination was a blow to the ribs from the side and a uppercut between the arms after the opponent moved his elbow as a defensive reflex to protect the ribs… impossible to counter!
Also, they would train not to get punched by shifting the head several times after punching.

Hello, Very good explained about the shifts. What I can see in instruction clips from Teddy Atlas and other experts, is that you need to move your head after you are finished with your punches. There are also some rules saying that you move 3 times (side to side) to avoid straight punches, 2 times to avoid hooks (U-shaped movements). This is basics, but not always explained in every peek a boo clip. Thanks
