I think you should get Stephan a bigger cage to fit a lot more plant life and hamster enrichment into it. You could also give him a couple of sticks and branches to climb and chew on. I also think that Stephan was destroying his enclosure because he was looking for food. I recommend sprinkling a bit of his food on the surface or even underground once in a while for him to eat. Still love your naturalistic cage idea by the way. Stephan has a really good life. :D
This channel does not give a flying fuck about commenters, so no use telling him what to do. Sad, because yes that is an incredible small cage, but good he has some digging space. Finally mainstream is learning a little bit, but getting soil from outside, and even putting your hamster outside? Shame!

He wants very badly to create an underground den like a wild hamster in the wild, but the soil is too loose and won't hold a chamber he can curl up in without collapsing.
People have already mentioned the issues with lack of space/not having a proper wheel to burn out energy but let’s not forget the fact that leaving a predator (the cat) looming over a prey animal will cause immense stress to it and easily explains why it was so eager to get underground
also the fact that he keeps shining a light on the hamster, including in the tunnels, it probably feels like there is no escape for the poor hamster :c
The natural environment for robo hamsters is arid desert. Sparse vegetarian, sand. Not wet dirt and plants. I recommend doing more research and go for a bigger setup since they move so much.
It looks like a really cool natural setup for your hamster, but unfortunately the tank and cage are not big enough. I think that it would be a good idea to give him a bigger tank so that he can burrow even more!!!
@@ausar3852The only reason why I commented this is because of the RSPCA'S minimum, which is 80x50cm. Any cage which is under this minimum will cause stress to the hamster. I think that it's an awesome setup and all but you can't fit all the important things that hamsters need for enrichment in a cage of this size. (Hope this makes more sense! 😊)
Stephan needs a lot more space, vertically and horizontally. Just as an example, my entire Livingroom space is barely enough for Puka to run around in. (No I don't put him in those stupid balls, he just runs in a confined area - being the living room) A tiny little dirt plot with random bits and bobs from the backyard could prove lethal to the ham if you don't know what's in it or what the construct is. Not to mention the plant life you're putting in it. Hammies aren't all made the same, and they need to be watched and cared for properly. He was probably digging like mad because he was stressed, and given the tank was acrylic and solid, he didn't have the option (which is bad) to chew on the 'bars' to show his stress. Or climb on the ceiling. So he digs. A lot.
I had to put my hamster in one of those stupid balls since I was afraid the dogs would get him otherwise, particularly the Jack Russell since he was fond of catching mice and rats and gumming them to death given how rough his teeth were at that point.
Please read on how to take care for a hamster, like bare minimum size for a cage, and please don’t use soil form outside as substrate, or bedding, use the paper bedding made for hamsters, as soil can harm them with bacteria, or if u do use soil use the ones u can buy from the store for hamsters, that are bacteria free. Also switch the running saucer for a actual wheel, as a saucer can damage their spring because they have to run sideways, making their spine over time bent, and it is their natural instinct to trample stuff looking for food, so u should scatter nuts, that are safe for hamsters, and seeds for them. They also burrow alot as they “live” inside the burrows that they dig, they tend to store food in them too, so make sure they have atleast 5-9 inches minimum of bedding for them to burrow, if u can’t meet those requirements for a hamster, then please don’t buy one, as hamsters are living animals, like us, how would u feel if u were trapped in you house for the rest of ur life, with an owner that doesn’t give u a bed, and the necessary stuff u need, like the restroom, which talking bout it, u can put hamster/child’s plays sand that are neutralized in a corner as they bath in them, to clean themself and they can also turn it into their toilets so cleanups are easier. So please be mindful that even tho they ar e ur pets, they should be living their best lives
Plss watch Victoria Raechel!!! Stephan was not ‘trashing’ his home, he was digging tunnels, a natural behaviour to hamsters, and their finished result is like the corridors to different rooms. Also, putting worms in a hamster cage is not a good idea! These could hv all sorts of diseases that little Stephan is not immune to! Also, worms can bite, so he’s at risk to flesh wounds. As many others have pointed out, sprinkling nuts and seeds and other stuff around an enclosure helps enrichment (and probably what stephan was foraging for when he wrecked the cage) and hamsters like using sand to clean themselves with and having some in one of the corners could lead to some very cute footage as well as help him stay clean. Sometimes hamsters will turn that into their bathroom too which would make cleanup a breeze.
Totally awesome experiment! However, I'd recommend finding naturalistic plants elsewhere, like at a reptile shop. Any number of parasites can be lurking in uncontrolled environments in the wild. Obviously we want to observe his wild behavior, but we have the benefit in captivity of removing dangers such as parasites that can shorten a wild lifespan, which is awesome! Also let's see a bigger enclosure! I wonder how many tunnels he can dig and if he'd use the running wheel at all when given more space and opportunity to dig and "redecorate," haha! Super curious, excited to see more
Love the Natural cage idea though they are hard to maintain as hamsters wreck then as shown on the video this is because hamsters think they are back in the wild. Also best to include sand because Hamsters in the wild will use sand, instead of water, to keep clean, and it has many natural benefits. They love rolling, digging, and even playing in smooth, clean, sand as it helps “bathe” their skin and coat in a non-traditional way.
for anybody who might want to do this i just wanna add its important to avoid products marketed as sand/dust baths because theyre too dusty and cause respiratory issues 99% of the time. only use plain reptile sand without added calcium (i buy zoomed brand) or sanitized childrens play sand
I’ve noticed that he likes comments that say “great job with the content” and pretty much ignores all comments about how much space hamsters need. This enclosure is really small, you’d have to look at other natural hamster habitats to really understand the amount of space they need
and a cat being this close to an open hamster enclosure. regardless of how well the cat is trained its still a prey animal and a predator. it being even close to the hamster will be enough to stress the hamster out. and then putting random larvae in the enclosure with the hamster to see if something will hatch or if the hamster will eat them?? we dont even know what they are or if theyve gotten into pesticides or what. and not even putting food in the enclosure to begin with? ? ? ? ? ? HELLO??? natural hamster enclosures are a very common thing and the setup isnt hard given even light research, if he'd have just done like one google search he couldve just set up a natural habitat first try and be done with it. but this is what guess work gets you.

This is one reason I haven’t gotten anything bigger than mice. Since at least 3 mice can live in a 30 gallon home and anything bigger than mice require so much more space

Hey guys,, please do not make a cage using only soil as a substrate- especially soil from outside,, I mean who knows what types of insects those were and what they might have been carrying and there’s also probably a lot of other bacteria in the soil- and unless you know exactly what a plant is and sure there’s no fertilisers used on it, don’t put it in a hamsters cage. You can put a section of dry or mostly dry soil in your hamsters cage but make sure there’s another substrate option such as paper or aspen/hemp shavings. Moisture can damage a hamsters fur so if it’s there only option for burrowing it’s going to damage it. I wouldn’t recommend only dry soil either, like just keep it to one section if you are going to otherwise it’s going to be a nightmare to clean cos you can’t see poop or anything and it’ll get everywhere. These hamsters have been bred in captivity, they are not used to the wild so they don’t have the immune system to deal with parasites from the outside either

@@simeydotme I know a lot about hamsters, actually. What they’re doing isn’t the best, clearly, and the hamster should just have terrarium sand and special plants, but I doubt the CZcamsr is doing this to hurt the hamster. Most of the time they just don’t know certain things and need advice on it
Awwwwww I absolutely love him❤that little face when he gets up out of digging he is having the time of his life x I have kept many hamsters in the past I recently lost one a few months ago which I saved and took in from an owner who’s 9 year old daughter dropped the poor little thing and ended up breaking his front left leg . I sobbed when I saw him he came to me with nothing not even a gnaw toy! I took him him got him toys to play with that wouldn’t involve climbing he could never use a wheel after the break as the injury would always be fragile to a re-break but do you know that little hamster never let the injury hold him back he used his sand bath and did all the things he would have with the use of four legs this set up would of been absolutely ideal for him I wish I would have seen your video sooner .Good luck to you and yours and the little guy he’s amazing ❤

Absolutely. And when he found larvae outside and actively put it in with his hamster... I cringed. You have no clue what diseases, lice, or mites could be hiding in that dirt!
It is obvious why Stephan went crazy in the natural habitat it’s because you have him in a super small cage and he doesn’t have enough space or bedding to burrow.
@@Sloimer Not wrong at all actually. The poor hamster is going stir crazy. Hamsters need something to spend all of the energy they have, and he’s not going to get it in a small space like that. Plus the cat looming over the enclosure is just going to stress out the hamster. Do one second of research before telling people that they are wrong.
At 4:06 I noticed his cage is very small and his wheel is to and that there is not enough bedding for him it doesn’t take long to just do a bit of reserch you’ve got to remember it’s just a little animal that wants to live it’s best life and has only got 2-3 years so just make sure you change the cage and do some reserch;)

Please don't just get soil and plants from outside for your hamster enclosure. It looks really nice but it's full of bugs, bacteria, and potentially mold, which could hurt Stefan or make him sick. Any of those plants could also be poisonous. You can get earth substrate and moss from dealers online where you know they are safe and clean.
i think you should get him a bigger cage and a proper wheel. in the wild theyd have infinite space to run, but the wheel supplements that in a cage. it seems he is really hyper and wants to run!
He is stressed and he need atleast 450 square inch of space and need 6-10inch of substrate and plenty of chewing toys and pipes hiding spots.. Also need big wheel atleast 8inch
please provide him with bigger enclosure, hamsters are high energy animals built to run number of kilometres every day, so they need to have access to running wheel all the time (better one than the plastic one in the video) and they need more room for their tunnels, this is too small
That's a play space, NOT his cage. To begin with there's no bedding material or food and for pity's sake only an absolute moron would attempt to keep a hamster in a space like that because it would escape.

I have been trying to move to bioactive enclosure for my roborovski but since hamsters are from arid environments I don’t believe a set up like this is suitable; too much moisture can lead to a variety of respiration issues. I would also personally not be using wild soil and plants for a hamster that has grown up in Captivity as their immune systems are potentially not strong enough for the huge variety of fungi, parasites, bacteria, viruses and whatever other nasties. Am I wrong for thinking this, and does anyone have info on creating bioactive homes suitable especially for robos? Thanks
You are correct. It is enriching to only use soil in one spot in the enclosure and not as the whole subtrate. Grabbing random soil from outside introduces parasites to the hamster causing a disaster. Not only that, the enclosure does not have enough floor space. I would just use paper or aspen for the main part of the bedding and 1/4 of the cage sand since you have a robo.
Correct ....I only use 1/3 to 1/4 of the tank for organic black soil and sand and aspen shaved bark as bulk. You have to start off with smaller amounts to get his immune system used to it .The organic black soil is pesticide& poison free and chemically cleaner and thick and solid( so he can build an actual Den in it) & won't collapse..Use clean diatomaceous earth for sand,. which helps control parasites and provides a bathroom and bedding area. Use organic black soil and introduce it in small amounts so his immune system can adjust
I thought the same !!! My hammy has normal hammy bedding in her cage and I still switch some out every few days to help with air flow and to prevent and buildup of humidity. Humidity and moisture isn’t good for them !!! As for the plants, I had a mini panic attack when they took them from outside 😭 the works too 😭😭😭 poor Stephen
You're 100% right, this is neat but is obvious they did zero research beforehand, you can build amazing vivariums with store bought materials and set it up for hamsters perfectly, but they just picked up a bunch of shit from the forest and called it a day lol
I would upgrade the enclosure, and don’t use soil you find from the forest, it’s a health hazard for the hamster, nasty bugs, parasites and Etc . All enclosures need a lid, chew toys, enrichment and 6+ inches of soil and a sand bath ! If your going to make a bioactive enclosure ( soil ) you need well draining soil, bacteria, plants, hamster safe isopods, an enclosure that’s absolutely huge, rocks and more. And the soil is going to be humid if damp which will cause mold , respiratory issues and just will be disgusting. I would stick to a normal 40 gallon tank ( minimum) and some hemp bedding
Yeah it's way too small and there is not enough wood to chew. Some plants may be toxic as well. Isn't the soil too cold? Shouldn't there be some straw and hemp litter?
@@Swestr yes, I had a dog box for my mice and once hay got in there ( soil was slightly damp ) it began to get moldy, so that is an annoying thing about soil, niteangel has natural moss though, but a normal enclosure can have shredded tissue paper and straw

My leopard gecko did something similar when I moved her into the bioactive terrarium . She went a little wild for a couple of days but then she settled down . Every now and then I change things up for her so it makes her feel like all that walking has gotten her somewhere 😂
Okay, some issues here. First, the enclosure is nowhere near big enough. In the US where pet care isn't the greatest the bare minimum for hamsters is 450 square inches of uninterrupted floor space with 650 square inches preferred. Uninterrupted floor space means all one level and not a bunch of those tiny cages connected by tubes. Also they need several inches of bedding to burrow and tunnel through. They also need a wheel that is large enough that when they're running on it their backs are not curving backwards which can cause potential permanent damage to the spine. The other thing you shouldn't do is take dirt and such from the forest. You have an animal that is domesticated and you don't have any idea what kinds of bacteria or parasites could be in the dirt, plants etc.

This is insane. You put random bugs into his enclosure. Random soil, plants, a "painting" that he chewed up (which can be toxic to him), and a small cage.. also there seems to be no water dish or anything. You complain about him digging and running around a lot.. but this is because he has not a lot of space... I think the idea is great, but there are so many more safer ideas that you could be using. By the amount of comments saying this is "cute" etc. It goes to show you're influencing other people to do the same thing you are which is leading your animal to harms way!! I am not meaning to hate on the video but i just think it's super unsafe for the lil guy! I don't think this would reach the creator, but to others who think this is cute and safe and want to try it.. please. Please. PLEASE, use safe materials and don't ever include toxic and potentially harmful things in your hammys enclosure!!
So many people tried to help him about the proper hamster care and told him to stop what he is doing because it is harmful for the hammy, but seems like he just does not care about them. He probably thinks that he is doing more than enough. Most likely he hasn't seen a great cage before and his cage is like a paradise in his eyes. Honestly, I thought that he is a great person, just didn't have access to the informations about the proper care, but right now it clearly seems like he is only doing these for the entertaintment and views, and actually does not care about the animal. I clicked on the video thinking that he learned about his mistakes and upgraded the cage, then I saw even worse things than the previous video.

You're right about them living in the wild tho! Hamsters are one of the most recently domesticated animals.. and in the wild they run/travel literally daily... By saying that you're kinda contradicting yourself 😚. Hamsters need bigger cages because having a wheel won't only benefit their running habits. Also! Soil can sometimes be toxic depending whether or not there have been added things to it. Potting soil can be deadly since it contains harmful chemicals. Hamsters in the wild would therefore have instinct and know what to stay away from, them putting stuff INTO their enclosure makes it unsafe and makes the hamster unable to stay away from it :). Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a natural cage but I just have some things I wanna ask. 1. Early in the video you say maybe he went feral since he wasn’t using the “wheel”. He would need a proper wheel (not the flying saucer you gave him) if you wanted him to use it. 2. I know this last thing is a long shot for asking but the cage doesn’t seem to meet the requirements for size that hamsters need. 3. The larvae you got may or may not be safe. I thing Stephen/Steven is adorable and want the best for him, which doesn’t include food poisoning. 4. Just give him sand, any sand (not dust, make sure you don’t get dust) will do. About the proper sized wheel I don't think that's possible for his enclosure have you seen the height it's impossible to get a 8 inch plus wheel inside because of how short the roof is but he does need a bigger flying saucer.
True a bigger enclosure is needed he should be able to afford it seeing that he has too many subscribers a reasonable cage size will probably be 800 to 1,000 square inches of floor space you can have the same naturalistic design and Stefan would be able to borrow a lot deeper.
I loved the concept till I realized you're using dirt from outside and are letting larvae stay in the dirt. Super negligent and dangerous, could give your hamster parasites
@@lloydsimmons8554 These things are really fragile. I read online in middle school that you can't give them sugary fruits because they'll get diabetes and die. My stepfather made me give mine crabapples because they "weren't sugary." The result was the hamster still got diabetes and died.
The dimensions of this cage is not bare minimum and the hamster also needs a wheel no matter how big the enclosure is. Also having a cat so close is dangerous.

Try next time to fill the bottom of the terrarium with around 7 inches of sand then add soil that is compacted down, as in the wild he would come across sand and compacted soil, if you struggle to compact it, sprinkle water on then add some heavy books on a flat wooden panel to fit the terrarium, then add more soil then repeat
Please don’t use soil and plants from the woods/outside. You might bring in unnecessary diseases, fungi or other potential risks to your dwarf (their immune system is very delicate and not comparable to their feral counterparts -unless you basically sterilized it and killed most of the germs etc.). I also recommend NOT having your cat close to your hamster (they’re prey animals and will feel stressed and even if your cat stays this calm, I wouldn’t risk it -accidents happen fast). Put the house on a pedestal or anything similar, so in case he digs under it, it won’t fall on your hammie and harm him. I would mostly avoid any kind of confider woods (essential oils, resin and they’re mostly nailed -there are harmless glues you can use that won’t harm him even if he eats them). Overall it’s a nice idea but maintaining it could turn out very difficult.
This was an experiment. The goal was to observe a domesticated hamster in a "wild" environment. The wilderness includes things like disease, insects, and predators. Hamsters don't even live in the forest, they live in the desert. If the goal was to make Stephan happy, the enclosure would be like your suggestions. But the goal is to see how strong Stephan is.
@@kevinbui6895 If that was the idea behind this video, it's clearly animal abuse. Domesticated animals (as their name states) aren't meant to live in the wild. And you're partly right. The European hamster doesn't live in the desert (whereas Djungarian hamsters do).

I lost a hamster when I was young and found it in an unused closet almost two months later. It had found an unused bag of dog food that it made into a large mountain with his bed at the top like a throne. It would attack and went feral during that free time.

Many years ago my cat had caught a gopher in the front yard. I was able to get to it before the cat caused him any harm. I had a 30 gallon aquarium stored in the garage and I decided to experiment. I filled the aquarium with dirt and at the top I put down some grass that I cut up from the edge of the lawn, turf like. And put the gopher in there. He lived in there for a couple of months, He would constantly change the tunnel ways. It was fun to watch him. I would give him carrots, bean sprouts and earth worms. I finally let him go, I figured he needed to go make more gophers.
I used to have a pet rat, i would bring him with me when i visited my grandparents. They had a cat ( the kitten showed up to thier work place alone so took him in) which qould hunt mice, pigeons, moles, squirrels, small birds and a small hare, but the cat was not really interested in my pet rat. He, the cat spent couple of hours looking around but he didnt bother my rat ever (2 months). Not even when he was out of his cage.

I like this idea, but try and make sure everything is hamster safe. Larvae from outside is not what hamsters are supposed to have in their house. Please don't risk the hamster's safety for an "experiment", because the hamster is a living creature, not a toy.

I think you should get Stephan a bigger cage to fit a lot more plant life and hamster enrichment into it. You could also give him a couple of sticks and branches to climb and chew on. I also think that Stephan was destroying his enclosure because he was looking for food. I recommend sprinkling a bit of his food on the surface or even underground once in a while for him to eat. Still love your naturalistic cage idea by the way. Stephan has a really good life. :D

@@ausar3852The only reason why I commented this is because of the RSPCA'S minimum, which is 80x50cm. Any cage which is under this minimum will cause stress to the hamster. I think that it's an awesome setup and all but you can't fit all the important things that hamsters need for enrichment in a cage of this size. (Hope this makes more sense! 😊)

Stephan needs a lot more space, vertically and horizontally. Just as an example, my entire Livingroom space is barely enough for Puka to run around in. (No I don't put him in those stupid balls, he just runs in a confined area - being the living room)
A tiny little dirt plot with random bits and bobs from the backyard could prove lethal to the ham if you don't know what's in it or what the construct is. Not to mention the plant life you're putting in it. Hammies aren't all made the same, and they need to be watched and cared for properly. He was probably digging like mad because he was stressed, and given the tank was acrylic and solid, he didn't have the option (which is bad) to chew on the 'bars' to show his stress. Or climb on the ceiling. So he digs. A lot.
I had to put my hamster in one of those stupid balls since I was afraid the dogs would get him otherwise, particularly the Jack Russell since he was fond of catching mice and rats and gumming them to death given how rough his teeth were at that point.
Please read on how to take care for a hamster, like bare minimum size for a cage, and please don’t use soil form outside as substrate, or bedding, use the paper bedding made for hamsters, as soil can harm them with bacteria, or if u do use soil use the ones u can buy from the store for hamsters, that are bacteria free. Also switch the running saucer for a actual wheel, as a saucer can damage their spring because they have to run sideways, making their spine over time bent, and it is their natural instinct to trample stuff looking for food, so u should scatter nuts, that are safe for hamsters, and seeds for them. They also burrow alot as they “live” inside the burrows that they dig, they tend to store food in them too, so make sure they have atleast 5-9 inches minimum of bedding for them to burrow, if u can’t meet those requirements for a hamster, then please don’t buy one, as hamsters are living animals, like us, how would u feel if u were trapped in you house for the rest of ur life, with an owner that doesn’t give u a bed, and the necessary stuff u need, like the restroom, which talking bout it, u can put hamster/child’s plays sand that are neutralized in a corner as they bath in them, to clean themself and they can also turn it into their toilets so cleanups are easier. So please be mindful that even tho they ar e ur pets, they should be living their best lives

Stephan was not ‘trashing’ his home, he was digging tunnels, a natural behaviour to hamsters, and their finished result is like the corridors to different rooms. Also, putting worms in a hamster cage is not a good idea! These could hv all sorts of diseases that little Stephan is not immune to! Also, worms can bite, so he’s at risk to flesh wounds.

As many others have pointed out, sprinkling nuts and seeds and other stuff around an enclosure helps enrichment (and probably what stephan was foraging for when he wrecked the cage) and hamsters like using sand to clean themselves with and having some in one of the corners could lead to some very cute footage as well as help him stay clean. Sometimes hamsters will turn that into their bathroom too which would make cleanup a breeze.

Totally awesome experiment! However, I'd recommend finding naturalistic plants elsewhere, like at a reptile shop. Any number of parasites can be lurking in uncontrolled environments in the wild. Obviously we want to observe his wild behavior, but we have the benefit in captivity of removing dangers such as parasites that can shorten a wild lifespan, which is awesome!
Also let's see a bigger enclosure! I wonder how many tunnels he can dig and if he'd use the running wheel at all when given more space and opportunity to dig and "redecorate," haha! Super curious, excited to see more
Love the Natural cage idea though they are hard to maintain as hamsters wreck then as shown on the video this is because hamsters think they are back in the wild. Also best to include sand because Hamsters in the wild will use sand, instead of water, to keep clean, and it has many natural benefits. They love rolling, digging, and even playing in smooth, clean, sand as it helps “bathe” their skin and coat in a non-traditional way.
I agree, i really wish they looked into the syrian hamsters habitat. As that would truly make a “wild” environment… not just make a terrarium.

Hey guys,, please do not make a cage using only soil as a substrate- especially soil from outside,, I mean who knows what types of insects those were and what they might have been carrying and there’s also probably a lot of other bacteria in the soil- and unless you know exactly what a plant is and sure there’s no fertilisers used on it, don’t put it in a hamsters cage. You can put a section of dry or mostly dry soil in your hamsters cage but make sure there’s another substrate option such as paper or aspen/hemp shavings. Moisture can damage a hamsters fur so if it’s there only option for burrowing it’s going to damage it. I wouldn’t recommend only dry soil either, like just keep it to one section if you are going to otherwise it’s going to be a nightmare to clean cos you can’t see poop or anything and it’ll get everywhere. These hamsters have been bred in captivity, they are not used to the wild so they don’t have the immune system to deal with parasites from the outside either

Awwwwww I absolutely love him❤that little face when he gets up out of digging he is having the time of his life x I have kept many hamsters in the past I recently lost one a few months ago which I saved and took in from an owner who’s 9 year old daughter dropped the poor little thing and ended up breaking his front left leg . I sobbed when I saw him he came to me with nothing not even a gnaw toy! I took him him got him toys to play with that wouldn’t involve climbing he could never use a wheel after the break as the injury would always be fragile to a re-break but do you know that little hamster never let the injury hold him back he used his sand bath and did all the things he would have with the use of four legs this set up would of been absolutely ideal for him I wish I would have seen your video sooner .Good luck to you and yours and the little guy he’s amazing ❤

At 4:06 I noticed his cage is very small and his wheel is to and that there is not enough bedding for him it doesn’t take long to just do a bit of reserch you’ve got to remember it’s just a little animal that wants to live it’s best life and has only got 2-3 years so just make sure you change the cage and do some reserch;)

Please don't just get soil and plants from outside for your hamster enclosure. It looks really nice but it's full of bugs, bacteria, and potentially mold, which could hurt Stefan or make him sick. Any of those plants could also be poisonous. You can get earth substrate and moss from dealers online where you know they are safe and clean.

I have been trying to move to bioactive enclosure for my roborovski but since hamsters are from arid environments I don’t believe a set up like this is suitable; too much moisture can lead to a variety of respiration issues. I would also personally not be using wild soil and plants for a hamster that has grown up in Captivity as their immune systems are potentially not strong enough for the huge variety of fungi, parasites, bacteria, viruses and whatever other nasties.
Am I wrong for thinking this, and does anyone have info on creating bioactive homes suitable especially for robos? Thanks
You are correct. It is enriching to only use soil in one spot in the enclosure and not as the whole subtrate. Grabbing random soil from outside introduces parasites to the hamster causing a disaster. Not only that, the enclosure does not have enough floor space. I would just use paper or aspen for the main part of the bedding and 1/4 of the cage sand since you have a robo.
Correct ....I only use 1/3 to 1/4 of the tank for organic black soil and sand and aspen shaved bark as bulk. You have to start off with smaller amounts to get his immune system used to it .The organic black soil is pesticide& poison free and chemically cleaner and thick and solid( so he can build an actual Den in it) & won't collapse..Use clean diatomaceous earth for sand,. which helps control parasites and provides a bathroom and bedding area.

I thought the same !!! My hammy has normal hammy bedding in her cage and I still switch some out every few days to help with air flow and to prevent and buildup of humidity. Humidity and moisture isn’t good for them !!! As for the plants, I had a mini panic attack when they took them from outside 😭 the works too 😭😭😭 poor Stephen
You're 100% right, this is neat but is obvious they did zero research beforehand, you can build amazing vivariums with store bought materials and set it up for hamsters perfectly, but they just picked up a bunch of shit from the forest and called it a day lol

I would upgrade the enclosure, and don’t use soil you find from the forest, it’s a health hazard for the hamster, nasty bugs, parasites and Etc .
All enclosures need a lid, chew toys, enrichment and 6+ inches of soil and a sand bath !
If your going to make a bioactive enclosure ( soil ) you need well draining soil, bacteria, plants, hamster safe isopods, an enclosure that’s absolutely huge, rocks and more.
And the soil is going to be humid if damp which will cause mold , respiratory issues and just will be disgusting.
I would stick to a normal 40 gallon tank ( minimum) and some hemp bedding

@@Swestr yes, I had a dog box for my mice and once hay got in there ( soil was slightly damp ) it began to get moldy, so that is an annoying thing about soil, niteangel has natural moss though, but a normal enclosure can have shredded tissue paper and straw

My leopard gecko did something similar when I moved her into the bioactive terrarium . She went a little wild for a couple of days but then she settled down . Every now and then I change things up for her so it makes her feel like all that walking has gotten her somewhere 😂
Okay, some issues here. First, the enclosure is nowhere near big enough. In the US where pet care isn't the greatest the bare minimum for hamsters is 450 square inches of uninterrupted floor space with 650 square inches preferred. Uninterrupted floor space means all one level and not a bunch of those tiny cages connected by tubes. Also they need several inches of bedding to burrow and tunnel through. They also need a wheel that is large enough that when they're running on it their backs are not curving backwards which can cause potential permanent damage to the spine. The other thing you shouldn't do is take dirt and such from the forest. You have an animal that is domesticated and you don't have any idea what kinds of bacteria or parasites could be in the dirt, plants etc.

You put random bugs into his enclosure. Random soil, plants, a "painting" that he chewed up (which can be toxic to him), and a small cage.. also there seems to be no water dish or anything. You complain about him digging and running around a lot.. but this is because he has not a lot of space... I think the idea is great, but there are so many more safer ideas that you could be using. By the amount of comments saying this is "cute" etc. It goes to show you're influencing other people to do the same thing you are which is leading your animal to harms way!!

So many people tried to help him about the proper hamster care and told him to stop what he is doing because it is harmful for the hammy, but seems like he just does not care about them. He probably thinks that he is doing more than enough. Most likely he hasn't seen a great cage before and his cage is like a paradise in his eyes. Honestly, I thought that he is a great person, just didn't have access to the informations about the proper care, but right now it clearly seems like he is only doing these for the entertaintment and views, and actually does not care about the animal. I clicked on the video thinking that he learned about his mistakes and upgraded the cage, then I saw even worse things than the previous video.

You're right about them living in the wild tho! Hamsters are one of the most recently domesticated animals.. and in the wild they run/travel literally daily... By saying that you're kinda contradicting yourself 😚. Hamsters need bigger cages because having a wheel won't only benefit their running habits. Also! Soil can sometimes be toxic depending whether or not there have been added things to it. Potting soil can be deadly since it contains harmful chemicals.
Hamsters in the wild would therefore have instinct and know what to stay away from, them putting stuff INTO their enclosure makes it unsafe and makes the hamster unable to stay away from it :).

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a natural cage but I just have some things I wanna ask. 1. Early in the video you say maybe he went feral since he wasn’t using the “wheel”. He would need a proper wheel (not the flying saucer you gave him) if you wanted him to use it. 2. I know this last thing is a long shot for asking but the cage doesn’t seem to meet the requirements for size that hamsters need. 3. The larvae you got may or may not be safe. I thing Stephen/Steven is adorable and want the best for him, which doesn’t include food poisoning. 4. Just give him sand, any sand (not dust, make sure you don’t get dust) will do. One thing I did like however, is the fact that you gave him a bunch of soil to dig in.

About the proper sized wheel I don't think that's possible for his enclosure have you seen the height it's impossible to get a 8 inch plus wheel inside because of how short the roof is but he does need a bigger flying saucer.

True a bigger enclosure is needed he should be able to afford it seeing that he has too many subscribers a reasonable cage size will probably be 800 to 1,000 square inches of floor space you can have the same naturalistic design and Stefan would be able to borrow a lot deeper.

I read online in middle school that you can't give them sugary fruits because they'll get diabetes and die.
My stepfather made me give mine crabapples because they "weren't sugary." The result was the hamster still got diabetes and died.

The dimensions of this cage is not bare minimum and the hamster also needs a wheel no matter how big the enclosure is. Also having a cat so close is dangerous.

Try next time to fill the bottom of the terrarium with around 7 inches of sand then add soil that is compacted down, as in the wild he would come across sand and compacted soil, if you struggle to compact it, sprinkle water on then add some heavy books on a flat wooden panel to fit the terrarium, then add more soil then repeat

Please don’t use soil and plants from the woods/outside. You might bring in unnecessary diseases, fungi or other potential risks to your dwarf (their immune system is very delicate and not comparable to their feral counterparts -unless you basically sterilized it and killed most of the germs etc.). I also recommend NOT having your cat close to your hamster (they’re prey animals and will feel stressed and even if your cat stays this calm, I wouldn’t risk it -accidents happen fast). Put the house on a pedestal or anything similar, so in case he digs under it, it won’t fall on your hammie and harm him. I would mostly avoid any kind of confider woods (essential oils, resin and they’re mostly nailed -there are harmless glues you can use that won’t harm him even if he eats them). Overall it’s a nice idea but maintaining it could turn out very difficult.

This was an experiment. The goal was to observe a domesticated hamster in a "wild" environment. The wilderness includes things like disease, insects, and predators.
Hamsters don't even live in the forest, they live in the desert. If the goal was to make Stephan happy, the enclosure would be like your suggestions. But the goal is to see how strong Stephan is.

I lost a hamster when I was young and found it in an unused closet almost two months later. It had found an unused bag of dog food that it made into a large mountain with his bed at the top like a throne. It would attack and went feral during that free time.

Many years ago my cat had caught a gopher in the front yard. I was able to get to it before the cat caused him any harm. I had a 30 gallon aquarium stored in the garage and I decided to experiment. I filled the aquarium with dirt and at the top I put down some grass that I cut up from the edge of the lawn, turf like. And put the gopher in there. He lived in there for a couple of months, He would constantly change the tunnel ways. It was fun to watch him. I would give him carrots, bean sprouts and earth worms. I finally let him go, I figured he needed to go make more gophers.
Worms thinking they're gonna have a snuggly winter underground then waking up to being eaten by Stephan XD

I used to have a pet rat, i would bring him with me when i visited my grandparents. They had a cat ( the kitten showed up to thier work place alone so took him in) which qould hunt mice, pigeons, moles, squirrels, small birds and a small hare, but the cat was not really interested in my pet rat. He, the cat spent couple of hours looking around but he didnt bother my rat ever (2 months). Not even when he was out of his cage.

I like this idea, but try and make sure everything is hamster safe. Larvae from outside is not what hamsters are supposed to have in their house. Please don't risk the hamster's safety for an "experiment", because the hamster is a living creature, not a toy.
