- Philip Glass - The Hours (2002) | arranged for piano solo by Michael Riesman and Nico Muhly (edited and recorded by me during Summer 2020 Sessions in a small wooden church in a remote Dutch village using a 70-something years old C. Bechstein Model C grand piano, which most definitely contributed to achieving a unique sound and atmosphere.
The Hours is the original soundtrack album, on the Elektra/Nonesuch label, of the 2002 Stephen Daldry’s film The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore. The original score was composed by Philip Glass.
Not all of the music in the film was composed specifically for it: earlier music by Glass, including a theme from his opera Satyagraha, was also featured and credited separately at the end of the film.
The album won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media (lost to the score of the film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers).
Michael Riesman and Nico Muhly arranged the soundtrack for the piano solo. This score was published in 2003 as a 64-paged book containing most of the tracks (excluding "For Your Own Benefit", "Vanessa and the Changelings" and "The Kiss").

Philip Glass's music represents for me an atmosphere, a feeling of the 21fst century postmodern man, his disappointment, his dissilusionment and emptiness because his attachment to materialism and consumerism.
Don't forget the underlying hope driving the crushing sadness. That's why, for me, it's so touching.
Great music for a great movie. Simple representation of our eternal attempts to find some greatness of life in a human existence. Yet time killing and repetitiveness become to obvious. And we pass away empty-handed

That was stunning! Thank you for your performance and interpretation. Philip Glass's compositions are such a flow of emotion and you accentuated it on the piano brilliantly. Life is music, music is play, play is deceit.. and I've been fooled lately. Listening to this arrangement, I get the feeling I'm not alone - perhaps it's common, if not even so common as to be an integral part of the human condition. Time for Metamorphosis..

I'm loving this...
I love the alternating descending notes in I'm Going To Make A Cake...how they just seem to go on forever while remaining exactly the same except for becoming lower and louder and deeper.
And in the same song, I notice a quality that is interesting and original and new, can't put my finger on exactly what it is, but I love it too. ...13:30 is the part I'm talking about :)

When i listen to this i think of everything women deal with in Society. You must be thin but not too thin. A lot of men like women to be thick but you can’t be fat. How women have to deal with working, being a good mother and keeping a home. The stress mothers have to endure. The hormonal battles of a woman. Being objectified at her work. The list goes on and on.
